Edinburgh YouTuber tests out how long £50 lasts in the city's pubs

Yahoo3 days ago

An Edinburgh YouTuber has tested out how budget friendly the capital is - by stretching £50 out in the city's pubs.
Michael, who runs the account Edinburgh & Beyond, wanted to see if it was possible to have a day of drinking on a budget. Setting off at around 1pm, Michael and his friend stop off at Platform 5 at Haymarket - spending £11 on two pints of Tennent's.
They also visit The Haymarket Bar, The Fox and Faun, The Ghillie Dhu, Mathers, and Scotts. Between the two of them, they spend £91.80 by 7.30pm - meaning Michael spent £45.40, leaving only £4.60 of his budget, on eight drinks.

His last, and ninth, drink was poured in The Auld Hundred - taking him just over the budget. Posting to YouTube, Michael said: "Day drinking in Edinburgh on a budget, is Edinburgh affordable?
"How long can £50 last? We are on a mission to find out if Edinburgh is affordable or if it is too expensive.

"Edinburgh is known for its bar and pubs, so we head to the capital to go on a bar crawl and see how long our money will last."
Closing off the clip, Michael added: "So, £50 each - we basically went over but only by £3.
"We've been out for about eight hours. It's been a good day."

Little Rock's SoMa Pride sees influx of donations ahead of Saturday's festivities

(Getty Images) Little Rock's second annual SoMa Pride festivities scheduled for Saturday will be smaller than last year's due to fewer sponsorships, but much of the event will go on as planned, organizer Elizabeth Michael said. SoMa Pride is co-hosted by Central Arkansas Pride, which also hosts LGBTQ+ events in October, and the SoMa 501 nonprofit, of which Michael is executive director. The nonprofit launched a crowdfunding campaign in March with a goal of $20,000 to 'bridge the gap' after losing 'a few major funding sources,' Michael said in May. As of Thursday, the goal had been reduced to $10,000, and the campaign had raised $6,800, an increase of $4,480 in just under a month. A May 29 article in The Guardian highlighted nationwide struggles to host Pride events, including SoMa Pride, in the current political climate. Michael said the publicity led to an influx in donations to the event's crowdfunding campaign. 'It has been extremely uplifting to see the support, not only locally, but from across the country,' she said. SoMa Pride will include a parade and performance art, such as live music and drag, on Saturday, as well as a Pride 'pre-party' Friday evening at the Boswell Mourot art gallery. Saturday's festivities will have one stage as opposed to two last year, Michael said. 'We did scale it back some, but we're really going to have a great event,' she said. 'We didn't have to scale back nearly as much as I thought we were going to have to.' Arkansas LGBTQ+ organizers crowdfund to make up for fewer Pride sponsors in time for June SoMa is short for 'South Main' and encompasses Little Rock's business district on Main Street just south of Interstate 630. SoMa Pride was not alone in its crowdfunding efforts. NWA Equality, which runs Northwest Arkansas Pride in Fayetteville, the state's largest annual Pride festival, raised over $30,000 in early April to make up for lost event sponsors. Michael and NWA Pride director Richard Gathright both said the current precarity of federal funds, such as grants for diversity initiatives, played a role in shortages of financial support for Pride. Pride festivities in major cities nationwide this year have lost major corporate sponsors, such as Anheuser Busch in St. Louis. Minnesota's Twin Cities Pride removed Target as a sponsor after the company dropped its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts. The changes have come as state and federal officials have targeted LGBTQ+ rights and DEI initiatives. SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE

Edinburgh man's touching tribute for best pal after his unexpected death at 38

An Edinburgh man has reached his fundraising target as he prepares to take on a gruelling charity in memory of his friend who passed away almost seven-months-ago. Joseph Coghill, 40, from Morningside will be embarking on a 200-mile walk to raise funds for charities close to his late friends heart - DJ Jackmaster. Jack Revill was in an Ibiza hospital for two days before his death at the age of 38 back in October. He suffered an accidental head injury, with his family sharing an emotional post on Instagram. In 2022, Jack completed the Edinburgh Half Marathon - raising funds for We Are With You - an organisation that helps people affected by drugs, alcohol and mental health problems, as well as Endometriosis UK. Now, Joseph will be raising funds for the same charities in his honour. Embarking on the journey on June 12, the 40-year-old has gone sober and gave up drugs and alcohol after his friends death. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Joseph said: "Jack was a huge part of my self-belief and my career. When I met him, I was working in Glasgow and jack knew he was always going to be a DJ - he had the confidence, the swagger and the full package really. "It's been around seven months since he died and it's awfully sad what happened. I am actually sober - I don't drink or do drugs anymore since he died. I still have a sense of anxiety and sadness but I am trying to use that energy to do something positive. "I am just trying to remember his life and not focus too much on the negative things. He was so fun and charming - he had a real heart of gold. "He was so generous and if you needed something he would always be there to help you." He added: "I am so happy that I have been able to raise a substantial amount of money - I am still fundraising because I haven't left yet. "It's so incredible, but I think I will be able to raise more. It's definitely been a lot of hard work on my end with the training and things but I am super amazed that I have been able to make this point Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sentstraight to your messages. "I am excited to get going now because I have been training for six months. I am a bit nervous but I know I am physically ready for this." Joseph is giving himself around two weeks to get to Glastonbury in Pilton, Somerset. You can find out more about the fundraiser here.
