iPhone Fold battery capacity could be way larger than Samsung or Google's foldables'

Tom's Guide21-07-2025
iPhone Fold could have a big battery as well as a big screen, says a new post from leaker Fixed Focus Digital (via MyDrivers).
According to a machine translation of one of FFD's recent posts (plus a little research to understand abbreviations and slang terms), the first foldable iPhone will have a battery capacity between 5,000 mAh and 5,500 mAh. This is quite large for a foldable phone, considering the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold use 4,400 mAh and 4,650 mah batteries, respectively.
The other big part of this rumor is an alleged price for the iPhone Fold of over 15,000 yuan, which is worth around $2,000. We had heard rumors of a potentially lower price for the Apple foldable going by the total cost of the phone's components.
But unfortunately, with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 now costing 2 grand and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold only slightly cheaper at $1,800, this price point makes a lot of sense for Apple and its first-ever foldable phone.
FFD also confirms, or at least repeats, a previous rumor that Samsung will provide the display for the foldable iPhone.
We would be happy if Apple put a big battery into the iPhone Fold — foldables need all the power they can get to run their larger displays. That said, it seems odd given Apple's current tendency to offer smaller than average batteries in its phones.
For instance, the current largest battery found in an iPhone — the iPhone 16 Pro Max — has a capacity of 4,685 mAh, which is about 10% smaller than equivalent Android phones.

The smaller capacity of iPhone batteries, fortunately, doesn't impact their overall battery life, thanks to efficient components used elsewhere. But this still indicates a trend in the company's iPhone hardware that a foldable model would have to break.
Chinese foldables like the Oppo Find N5 or the Honor Magic V5 offer similar capacities to the one rumored for the iPhone Fold, which they managed to reach by using silicon-carbon batteries. These allow for a higher capacity in the same space compared to standard lithium cells found in most phones. Apple has yet to use this technology, but we've heard claims that the iPhone 17 Air could use a silicon-carbon cell.
After years of rumors, the iPhone Fold could finally launch at the end of 2026. While its hardware may not differ too much from the best foldable phones already available, the fact it's an iPhone could be all it needs to generate a lot of interest, if not sales.

If rumors are to be believed, Apple will finally dive into the foldable phone market in 2026 with the much-rumored iPhone Fold. Rumors have been all over the place when it comes to the the screen size of this unreleased device, but seemed to have settled on around 7.7 inches for the interior panel. That claim was backed up today (July 25) by regular leaker Digital Chat Station, who posted on Weibo that the iPhone Fold would feature a 7.7-inch unfolded screen and a cover display of 5.49-inches. This isn't the first time Digital Chat Station has made that claim, previously saying it came from an iPhone Fold prototype. "The screen size of the first foldable iPhone has been revealed," DCS said in this most recent machine-translated post. "5.5-inch outer screen + 7.7-inch inner screen." They added that the current prototype has shrunk a bit from the February version. It's an iota smaller than recent rumors that had the device featuring a 7.8-inch internal display, similar to numbers from Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who reported the same measurements back in March. Kuo also believes the phone will measure between 9 and 9.5mm thick when folded and 4 and 4.5mm when opened. Small screen compared to rivals While thin, the iPhone Fold would be thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 which measures 4.2mm when unfolded and 8.9mm closed. If those numbers are true it would additionally make Apple's device smaller than a number of the best foldable phones available including Samsung's newly released Fold, which features an 8-inch unfolded screen and a 6.5-inch exterior display. The upcoming Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold — which we're expecting to see at Google's August 20 event — is supposed to feature a 6.4-inch exterior display while retaining the same 8-inch inner screen as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The Oppo Find N5 features a huge 8.12-inch inner display alongside a 6.62-inch front screen. iPad-esque The iPhone Fold's smaller screen may not be a deal breaker, as rumors hint that Apple is looking for customized display ratio of 4:3, similar to the iPad. This would make the foldable iPhone more familiar to Apple fans who have used iPads before. Plus, Apple is reportedly developing iOS 27 for foldable phones which takes inspiration from the latest version of iPadOS. Apple is years behind its rivals when it comes to foldable phones, but the company is allegedly obsessed with only releasing one once a creaseless display was possible. Reportedly, that finally became possible thanks to a partnership with Samsung Display. iPhone Fold could cost less than Galaxy Z Fold 7 — under $2,000

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Buying the rumored iPhone Fold may not set you back as much money as expected, according to new analysis from Swiss investment bank UBS and Jimmy Yoon (seen by Fortune). The core reason for this is the analysis' estimate of the foldable iPhone's bill of materials - the total price a company pays for the parts for its products. Because of Apple's ability to buy memory, chipsets and cameras for cheaper than rivals (likely thanks to the iPhone's prominence and Apple's capacity to bulk buy components), plus the now established supply chain for other parts, UBS estimates the iPhone Fold's bill of materials as $759. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold SE, the predecessor to the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, cost Samsung $790 per unit. As a result, the UBS analysis predicts Apple will price the iPhone Fold between $1,800 and $2,000, when accounting for manufacturing and Apple's usual profit margin on its phones. That would be at worst the same price as, if not cheaper than, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which now costs $2,000 in the U.S.. A much more appealing idea than the rumored $2,100 - 2,300 price we've heard before. Limited quantities but a big impact UBS' report also believes Apple will initially produce 10 - 15 million iPhone Folds, less than half of what just the Pro Max version of a given iPhone generation tends to sell. The report goes on to name various companies that will likely supply Apple and build the foldable iPhone, including Samsung Display, which will apparently build the 7-inch main display for the device. Finally, UBS makes a prediction that the launch of the iPhone Fold will increase adoption of foldable devices across the whole market. And that seems like a safe bet. iPhone users make up a huge chunk of the smartphone market, and as tempting as the best foldable phones might be, they all currently run on Android. That benefit may also extend to larger folding tablets and laptops according to UBS, although there are fewer of these devices on the market. While it's been six years since the first generation of foldable phones emerged, Apple's first foldable could cause a renaissance for the category. That big revival may still be some time coming though, as 2026 is the latest estimate for the launch date for the iPhone Fold.
