Jason Alexander has career night to lead Astros over Marlins

Reuters2 days ago
August 5 - Jason Alexander pitched six scoreless innings to lead the visiting Houston Astros to an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
Astros outfielder Jesus Sanchez, who made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2020, slugged an RBI double to open the scoring during Houston's five-run fourth inning.
It was Sanchez's fourth game with the Astros after being acquired on July 31. He played 532 games over his first six MLB seasons with the Marlins.
Alexander (2-1) allowed just three hits and one walk. He struck out six batters. For Alexander, 32, it was the longest scoreless outing of his career.
Javier Sanoja and Derek Hill homered for Miami in the seventh. It was the first time in 19 years that the Marlins slugged consecutive pinch-hit homers.
After giving up just one run (zero earned) over his last two starts, Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10) lasted seven innings, allowing nine hits, one walk and six runs.
Alcantara was perfect through three innings. But he needed 26 pitches to get through a rough fourth frame as the Astros scored five runs on six hits.
Jeremy Pena started the rally with a double. Sanchez pulled the next pitch for an RBI double to right, ambushing his former teammate Alcantara. Jose Altuve followed with a bunt single and a steal before the Astros capped the rally with Carlos Correa's single, Christian Walker's infield force out and Yainer Diaz's two-run double.
One of the game's biggest moments occurred in the sixth inning after Miami loaded the bases with two outs on singles by Kyle Stowers and Agustin Ramirez and a walk to Liam Hicks.
But then Otto Lopez, who is 5-for-11 with the bases loaded, grounded out to end the threat.
Houston extended its lead to 6-0 in the seventh as Cam Smith singled and scored from first on Pena's double.
Miami closed its deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh as Sanoja and Hill went deep.
Houston scored twice in the eighth thanks to a mental mistake by Lopez at shortstop.
With one out and Victor Caratini at first, Diaz hit what should've been a double-play grounder. Marlins first baseman Eric Wagaman scooped up the grounder, stepped on the bag and fired to shortstop Lopez, who tagged second base and tossed it back to Wagaman. However, since Wagaman had touched first, Lopez needed to tag Caratini and he failed to do so.
Houston took advantage as Mauricio Dubon stroked an RBI double and Smith lined a run-scoring single.

Josh Naylor, Julio Rodriguez homer as Mariners top White Sox

August 7 - Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez homered and George Kirby pitched six quality innings as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Chicago White Sox 8-6 Wednesday night. Naylor hit a two-run shot in the first inning and Rodriguez added a three-run blast in a five-run second as the Mariners built an early 7-1 lead. Seattle improved to 5-1 on its 10-game homestand and will try to sweep the three-game series with the White Sox on Thursday afternoon. Mike Tauchman, Lenyn Sosa and Michael A. Taylor homered for Chicago, which suffered its third straight loss after winning 10 of its first 14 after the All-Star break. Kirby (7-5) allowed two runs on five hits to win his third straight start and improve to 6-1 in his past seven decisions. The right-hander walked two and struck out nine. Andres Munoz worked the ninth for his 26th save. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon (4-9) lasted just 1 2/3 innings. The righty gave up seven runs on four hits, walked three and fanned one. Naylor hit a 450-foot shot into the second deck in right field in the first after Cal Raleigh drew a walk. The White Sox got a run back in the second as Luis Robert Jr. singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Raleigh. Curtis Mead lined a run-scoring single to right. In the bottom of the inning, a J.P. Crawford single was sandwiched by walks to Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena to load the bases for Raleigh, who lined a two-run single to right. Rodriguez followed with a 434-foot blast high off the out-of-town scoreboard beyond the Mariners' bullpen in left-center. Chicago's Brooks Baldwin led off the third with a single and took second on a wild pitch. He scored on Andrew Benintendi's one-out single to right to make it 7-2. The score stayed that way until the seventh, when Taylor greeted reliever Eduard Bazardo with a leadoff double. An out later, Tauchman and Sosa hit back-to-back homers, both to center, to pull the White Sox within 7-5. The Mariners responded in the bottom of the frame as a one-out walk to Rodriguez was followed by a Naylor single and Eugenio Suarez lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Taylor went deep to right-center off Munoz leading off the ninth for the game's final run. --Field Level Media

Padres rally in ninth to take series from Diamondbacks

August 7 - Ryan O'Hearn tied the game with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, Jose Iglesias singled in the go-ahead run, and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in the decisive game of a three-game series on Wednesday in Phoenix. O'Hearn went deep off Kyle Backhus (0-2), his first homer since being acquired by San Diego at the trade deadline. Xander Bogaerts then doubled and was sacrificed to third before scoring on Iglesias' line-drive single to right. Corbin Carroll hit a 443-foot homer in the first inning and Alek Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the second to give Arizona a 2-0 lead, but the Diamondbacks had one hit after Tyler Locklear's single in the second. Padres reliever Adrian Morejon (9-4) gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Mason Miller struck out three in the ninth while working around a two-out walk for his 21st save, his first since joining San Diego in a deadline deal. Freddy Fermin had three hits for the Padres, who have won nine of 11. Bogaerts homered in the seventh to slice Arizona's lead to 2-1. He went deep for the second consecutive game and has hit six of his nine homers since June 19. The Diamondbacks have lost two in a row and eight of 11. Arizona starter Anthony DeSclafani gave up three hits in 4 1/3 scoreless innings during his third start of the season. He struck out four, issued no walks and was removed with a 2-0 lead. Nestor Cortes gave up two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Padres after being obtained at the deadline. He walked three and struck out three. Carroll hit an 0-2 pitch for his 23rd homer for a 1-0 lead as the second batter in the first inning. The D-backs loaded the bases with no outs in the second when Locklear beat out an infield single before Cortes hit Blaze Alexander and James McCann with inside pitches. However, Arizona scored only on Thomas' sacrifice fly. After going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position in a 10-5, 11-inning loss Tuesday, the D-backs were 0-for-4 in those situations on Wednesday. --Field Level Media

Refreshed Sinner ready for Cincinnati title defence

Aug 7 (Reuters) - World number one Jannik Sinner said he had taken the right decision by opting for a long break following his Wimbledon triumph, and the recharged Italian is ready to fire at the Cincinnati Open where he will defend his title. The 23-year-old lost a marathon French Open final to rival Carlos Alcaraz in June before gaining revenge over the Spaniard at the All England Club last month to secure his fourth Grand Slam title overall and second of a difficult season in which he served a short ban for an inadvertent doping offence. Sinner opted to prioritise his health following that victory and will return after a near month-long absence from the circuit when he takes to the court over the weekend in Cincinnati after getting a first-round bye. "The body and mind need to recover and need to understand what happened," Sinner told reporters in Ohio on Wednesday as he explained his scheduling. "I'm very happy I took some time off, seeing my family and friends and very important people I have around. In the past, I made some mistakes sometimes, starting too early at times. "I had conversations with the whole team, trying to understand what's best. When you win big titles, they're very special moments and then you have to leave them." Sinner sported a protective sleeve on his right elbow when he practised with Christopher Eubanks on Wednesday, sparking concerns that he was still feeling the effects of an injury sustained during his title run at Wimbledon. The Italian said, however, that he was only using it as it gave him more stability. "The elbow is good. Today was the first time that I put the sleeve on because I liked the feeling of the sleeve," he said. "The impact with the ball is slightly more stable and I liked it at Wimbledon. I had to see how it is when it's very hot and humid because it's a bit different. "It's going to be something I take into consideration, but I really love the feeling of pure striking." The Cincinnati tournament is a tune-up event for the U.S. Open that runs from August 23 to September 7.
