Brighton respond to Man Utd's player-plus-cash offer for Carlos Baleba
Manchester United have reportedly made their opening offer for Brighton star Carlos Baleba, including one of their own players in their bid. Ruben Amorim has primarily focused on improving his attack in his first summer at Old Trafford, splashing around £200million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Much more work to the squad is required if United are to challenge for the Premier League title, with the club linked with signing a new goalkeeper in the form of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Recruiting a new central-midfielder would appear to be their next priority, with Amorim admitting in pre-season that his side lack pace in the middle of the park. To that end, the Red Devils made contact with Brighton last week to enquire over how much it would cost to sign Baleba, one of the most promising young talents in the league. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. The Seagulls have no interest in selling the 21-year-old this summer and in any case would want upwards of £100m, with Manchester City also keen on the player. But that hasn't stopped United, who, according to The Standard, have made their first bid for Baleba, offering a transfer fee plus young midfielder Toby Collyer in part-exchange. That offer has been rejected, with Brighton holding out for a fee akin to the £115m Chelsea paid to sign Moises Caicedo two years ago, but United's interested has not lessened. Erik ten Hag handed Collyer his senior debut last season and he has since gone on to make 13 appearances for United. More Trending He has featured several times during United's pre-season but it is thought he could be loaned out for the upcoming campaign, with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday interested. Baleba meanwhile has missed Brighton's last three pre-season friendlies, leading to suggestion that the Cameroon international was being left out amid the transfer speculation. That is reportedly not the case however and instead he has been ruled out due to a knee injury and was watching on from the sidelines as his side played Wolfsburg behind-closed-doors last weekend. It remains to be seen whether Baleba will be fit to play in Brighton's opening game of the season against Fulham on Saturday, while United host Arsenal on Sunday. Ex-Celtic star Matt O'Riley ‘agrees deal to leave Brighton for Italy as huge wage packet revealed'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Celtic star Matt O'Riley is reportedly edging closer to the Brighton exit, with a number of clubs in Italy keen on the attacker. It's being reported by Tuttosport that Serie A giants Juventus have been interested in the Denmark international for some time and now want to make a concrete bid for the 24-year-old. The Bianconeri are reportedly set to "guarantee him a five-year contract" worth around "£2.6million a year". However, they will need to sell players such as Douglas Luiz, Weston McKennie and Fabio Miretti to raise funds to make the move happen. Brighton are asking for £26m, which is slightly more than the £25m they paid Celtic for him last year. The Hoops made a substantial profit on O'Riley after paying MK Dons just £1.5m for him in January 2022. O'Riley made a huge impact in Scottish football, scoring 27 goals in more than a 100 games for the Hoops. As well as winning the Scottish Premiership three times, he helped the club win a treble in the 2022-2023. He was also Celtic Players' player of the year the following season. Just hours after completing his move from Celtic to Brighton he suffered a serious ankle injury on his debut against Crawley Town. Despite the setback, he would go on to make 23 appearances that season, scoring twice and assisting three goals. But he was left frustrated at being played out of position. Also the 24-year-old isn't getting regular game time and has been attracting attention from other Serie A giants including Napoli and Roma. Awkward Matt O'Riley moment has fans convinced 'he thinks he's still at Celtic' Meanwhile, on Saturday O'Riley revealed he still has a soft spot for Celtic and follows the team's results. He told the Celtic Way: "Even though I don't post that much on social media, I'm still watching every single game and trying to keep tabs on them. "I'm still in contact with people. "It's hard in football to keep contact with everybody because it moves so fast and things change, but I did make some good friends up there, and I'm still in contact with a lot of staff at Celtic, which has been nice." 'Attack looks tasty' but 'defensive concerns' - fan views on new season
We asked for your views on whether Brighton are ready for the new season after the Seagulls ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Bundesliga side Wolfsburg at Amex are some of your comments:Fran: Was at the Wolfsburg game and we looked good. I still think we are a little too slow in our build-up play. Wolfsburg did not press and we then just played it around hoping they would come at us, which of course they didn't. Teams will do this next season so we need to be quicker in our play. Still think we need another centre forward to cover Welbeck. It was a shame we didn't get to see our new forwards in action, even a small run out would have been nice. Still, plenty to look forward to. Can't I think my club, Brighton, are ready for this season. In many previous seasons, we have seen many players leave (thank you Chelsea) and us get better. They already have replacements for the players who have left and this season is no different with someone like Georginio replacing Joao Pedro! The only exception this season is the left-back position where we signed Maxim De Cuyper to replace Estupinan! Brighton will be absolutely fine this season!Chris: Offensively looking strong, inventive and full of goals. Defensively, looking weak, out of position, and leaky. There could be some very high scoring games to The summer business has been good and Albion are again laying strong foundations for the future. Maxim De Cuyper looks a ready made replacement for Estupinan and we have good strength in depth in most areas of the pitch, except perhaps at left-back. I hope Baleba stays another year and helps push us into Europe again. Who knows, maybe even the Champions League if others struggle to cope with the demands of European For me the team look almost ready but I still have defensive concerns. Attacking-wise things look tasty but a back three? Large gaps appeared in all friendly games and Premier League sides will exploit this. Another rollercoaster season ahead.
