Former Ireland international David Meyler returns to Cork City as assistant manager
Meyler returns to the club, having played at Academy and first-team level before his Premier League move to Sunderland in 2008.
The Cork midfielder also played for Hull City and was capped 26 times for Ireland, before a knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 30.

Meyler, now 36, has since undertaken coaching roles in the Hull City academy and with the Ireland 17s under Colin O'Brien.
'I am really delighted to be back at City, where my journey in professional football started,' said Meyler. 'Since retiring from playing, I have really enjoyed the coaching side of the game and this is an opportunity that I am really looking forward to.
'I have spoken to Ger [Nash, manager] at length about the role and I am excited about what lies ahead. I know that Ger is very keen to have a really strong Cork representation among the players and staff and, as both a Corkman and a former player, this club means a lot to me and I will do everything in my power to help us progress.
'While I have been away from City for a long time, I have always kept an eye out for how the club is doing. I think it is clear to see that there are a lot of very talented players at the club, and I look forward to working alongside Ger and the other staff to help those players in whatever way we can.'

Cork City manager Nash welcomed Meyler, who continues his 'impressive' coaching career on Leeside.
'I think it is important for the club and its identity that there is a 'Corkness' to the club and to my staff. I have been very impressed with the conversations I have had with David so far. I think we are very much aligned in a lot of ways, and we are both young, hungry, passionate coaches who want to make a difference.
'This club produces an awful lot of very talented young players; I have great belief in them and I feel we can give them a platform to go on and deliver on their potential. David has had an impressive coaching career so far, and he can add a lot to what we want to do here.'
Meyler will take up the role when City return to action following the upcoming mid-season break. They are currently ninth in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division, level on 12 points with bottom side Sligo Rovers after 17 games.

Sky pundit angers fans after calling Keith Andrews 'British'
Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson triggered a familiar nerve among Ireland fans on Saturday. Dawson mistakenly labelled Keith Andrews as 'British' while discussing how he might get on as the new Brentford boss. Unsurprisingly, the ex-Hull City defender's comment sparked a bit of irritation among Irish football fans and they made sure to vent their frustration on social media. One user wrote: 'Michael Dawson referred to Keith Andrews as a 'British manager' on Sky Sports today. Thought Sky Sports like to educate people on this matter or maybe that's just for the Irish women's team. Dawson and Sky Sports, clowns.' Another said: 'FYI Michael Dawson: Keith Andrews is Irish, not British! What is it about Sky Sports News getting things like that wrong?' A third added: 'Michael Dawson just said with reference to Keith Andrews that it's great to see a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League'. Daft in this day and age really.' Andrews will no doubt have more to worry about than pundits getting his nationality wrong after his opening day anguish against Forest. There were question marks about the Dubliner's appointment at the club with fans immediately presuming his lack of experience won't get him far. Andrews joined Brentford in July 2024 as a set-piece coach and was promoted to the major role after Thomas Frank's departure this summer. In fairness to Andrews, he was handed a pretty nightmarish task replacing Frank at the club. Not only did the long-serving boss depart but Brentford also lost two key players with star man Bryan Mbeumo moving to Manchester United and captain Christian Norgaard heading to Arsenal. On top of these, talented striker Yoane Wissa is heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and is essentially unavailable for selection until the move is complete. A couple of fans shared sympathy for Andrews, understanding the immediate obstacles thrust upon him. One fan said: 'Felt sorry for Keith Andrews. He clearly wanted Wissa in his squad and in his team today but he's obviously not in the right frame of mind after being tapped up. He wants the situation sorted. I don't understand why Newcastle don't just pay the asking price and get it over with.' Another agreed: 'Keith Andrews looked gutted today. He really wanted Wissa to play … it could have made a big difference. Now he has to replace him, so selling him quickly is a must.'

Pep warns stars must go, but Lewis wants City future
Rico Lewis is determined fight for his place with a Manchester City side he senses have "additional hunger" to regain the Premier League crown this season. The England international produced the assist for the opening goal as City began their quest for a seventh title in nine years by thrashing Wolves 4-0 at Molineux on Saturday. That came amid rumours linking the 20-year-old with a move to Nottingham Forest but, while manager Pep Guardiola has said more than once he would like to trim his squad, Lewis does not intend to depart. After the win, Guardiola claimed Manchester City's squad size is "not healthy" and indicated his main concern is now offloading players. Guardiola said: "(It's) too much - too many people. I like a deep squad to compete in all competitions but I don't want to leave players at home. It's not healthy. You cannot create a good vibe or atmosphere to compete. "Everyone has to feel they can play and help. The club has known it since last season, it's not news, but the situation is what it is. "In the next two weeks, people will talk with players and agents to find a solution." City academy graduate Lewis does not want to be among those departures: "I've never, ever seen myself at a different club. I've always wanted to play for City. "It's my dream club, and like you see (here), when I'm playing with the kind of players that I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy. "Everyone wants assurance and security but, at the end of the day, it's on me to perform. It's on me to take the chances. After that, I can't blame myself. "If I take my own chances, I do it. If I don't, then I have to work and get better." After losing the title last season after four successive victories, City started the new campaign with a strong statement. Erling Haaland scored either side of a Tijjani Reijnders strike and substitute Rayan Cherki added a fourth late on. Reijnders also had a hand in both Haaland goals in a highly impressive Premier League debut. Lewis said: "As much as we can we forget about last season, but obviously it's in the back of our minds and we could say it's fuelling the fire for us. "There's always hunger but I think there could be additional hunger now that it's not our crown to defend. "There's something that we're chasing. We're so focused on this season. We've already had the Club World Cup so we feel much stronger, together as a team, and I think that's the main thing, we feel like a unit." James Trafford made a confident debut in the City goal after number one Ederson withdrew due to illness. He was beaten in the first half but Marshall Munetsi was clearly offside, while Wolves also went close when Jorgen Strand Larsen shot narrowly wide. Manager Vitor Pereira admitted the club need to bring in reinforcements before the transfer deadline. The Portuguese, who engineered an escape from relegation last season, said: "Of course, we need more options to be stronger, more options with quality to improve our squad. "Before the next game will be difficult but my expectation is that the club can bring three, four players with quality before the end of the market. "This league is very tough and we need to add more quality."
