Former Ireland international David Meyler returns to Cork City as assistant manager
FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL David Meyler has been appointed as Cork City FC men's first-team assistant manager.
Meyler returns to the club, having played at Academy and first-team level before his Premier League move to Sunderland in 2008.
The Cork midfielder also played for Hull City and was capped 26 times for Ireland, before a knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 30.

Meyler, now 36, has since undertaken coaching roles in the Hull City academy and with the Ireland 17s under Colin O'Brien.
'I am really delighted to be back at City, where my journey in professional football started,' said Meyler. 'Since retiring from playing, I have really enjoyed the coaching side of the game and this is an opportunity that I am really looking forward to.
'I have spoken to Ger [Nash, manager] at length about the role and I am excited about what lies ahead. I know that Ger is very keen to have a really strong Cork representation among the players and staff and, as both a Corkman and a former player, this club means a lot to me and I will do everything in my power to help us progress.
'While I have been away from City for a long time, I have always kept an eye out for how the club is doing. I think it is clear to see that there are a lot of very talented players at the club, and I look forward to working alongside Ger and the other staff to help those players in whatever way we can.'

Cork City manager Nash welcomed Meyler, who continues his 'impressive' coaching career on Leeside.
'I think it is important for the club and its identity that there is a 'Corkness' to the club and to my staff. I have been very impressed with the conversations I have had with David so far. I think we are very much aligned in a lot of ways, and we are both young, hungry, passionate coaches who want to make a difference.
'This club produces an awful lot of very talented young players; I have great belief in them and I feel we can give them a platform to go on and deliver on their potential. David has had an impressive coaching career so far, and he can add a lot to what we want to do here.'
Meyler will take up the role when City return to action following the upcoming mid-season break. They are currently ninth in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division, level on 12 points with bottom side Sligo Rovers after 17 games.

Kelleher joins Brentford and says 'it wasn't difficult to leave Liverpool'
Caoimhín Kelleher sealed his move to Brentford today and insisted it was an easy decision to leave champions Liverpool. The Ireland international has signed a five-year deal with the Bees in a move that could be worth €21 million with performance related add-ons. And the contract includes an option to extend the stay by a further 12 months. Kelleher - who made 67 appearances for Liverpool - won a second Premier League medal this season but was desperate to become a No 1 in his own right. Brentford were in the market for a quality goalkeeper after selling Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen. And after completing the transfer, Cork man Kelleher, 26, said: 'I'm buzzing, I'm really happy to be here. 'I don't think it was very difficult for me to leave Liverpool. I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a no.1 and to play every week. 'I heard of some interest a number of weeks ago. Once I knew Brentford was in for me, it was definitely one I was really excited about and wanted to do as quickly as possible. 'When I come back for pre-season, all focus will be on what I want to do next year; to work on certain goals and what I need to improve on.' Kelleher skipped Ireland's training session on Monday to complete his medical but was back with the Boys in Green in Dublin today. He will join forces with Ireland team-mate Nathan Collins at Brentford and Kelleher revealed how Collins helped persuade him to sign. 'I spoke to Nathan. He spoke really well about the whole club. It'll make it easier for me to settle in and be nice to have a few friendly faces,' said the Corkman. Kelleher continued: 'I came down to meet the manager and some of the coaches. They spoke to me about why they wanted me to be here and showed me around. 'It was interesting to see their point of view on why they wanted to sign me and how they think they can develop my game. 'It was impressive and I think the club's a really good fit for me. They've got a really good track record of improving and developing players which is what's drawn here.' Brentford's Director of football Phil Giles insists Kelleher was always their first choice target once they knew Flekken was leaving. Giles said: 'I'm very pleased to welcome Caoimhín to Brentford. We have scouted him in the past and were aware that he had a year to go on his contract with Liverpool. 'When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Bayer Leverkusen, we immediately thought about Caoimhín as his replacement. 'As well as being a very good goalkeeper, I've rarely met a player for whom everybody has such positive words to say about his personality and character.' And Brentford goalkeeper coach Manu Sotelo feels there is even more to come from Kelleher. 'Caoimhín is a young keeper full of talent who has already proven how he can perform in the Premier league as well as Europe,' said Sotelo. 'He is calm and obsessed with improving. His best quality is his agility and he is a clever goalkeeper, with positioning and awareness being key elements of his game. 'With us, I'm confident he will achieve the next level in terms of performance and show the potential he has. I'm looking forward to working with him.'

Caoimhín Kelleher returns to Ireland camp after finalising Premier League switch
Caoimhín Kelleher was back on the training pitch with Ireland today after finalising his move from Liverpool to Brentford. The goalkeeper had permission to skip yesterday's first session of the week ahead of Friday's clash with Senegal as he was completing his medical with the Bees. Brentford have yet to confirm the transfer but it is imminent and Kelleher is moving for a fee that could rise to €21 million with performance-related add ons. John O'Shea, the Ireland assistant manager and former Manchester United ace, admits it will be 'fantastic' for the Corkman to be playing regularly as a No 1. O'Shea said today: 'He trained very well but listen, we've nothing to confirm yet. Obviously it's not for us to confirm anything. But if it does happen, if something happens, fantastic. If it doesn't, we still have a very good goalkeeper on our hands either way. 'It's obviously out there where he might have been or where he might have gone, but we can't confirm anything yet.' Kelleher won a Premier League medal with Liverpool this season and it can't have been an easy decision to say goodbye to a successful club. But the Reds backup - who joined Liverpool as a youth in 2015 - had also made no secret of his desire to play first-team football on a regular basis. O'Shea said: 'Like the manager (Heimir Hallgrimsson) has always stressed, we'd love our players to be playing. It's as simple as that. Caoimhin is obviously at a very good club, has had success, and whatever happens next, hopefully he's playing. 'And we hope the same for all the squad that they get themselves playing as much as possible.' And O'Shea added: "Caoimhín has proven the quality that he has every time he's been asked to go in as the number one for Liverpool. When he's had a consistent run, they haven't missed Alisson when he has been injured. "The whole of Europe and the whole of the world has seen that when Caoimhín has been in goal for Liverpool.' Meanwhile, O'Shea has reported that Ireland have no injury concerns going into Friday's Senegal friendly at Aviva Stadium.

Richard Dunne gives his verdict on Caoimhin Kelleher's move to Brentford
Richard Dunne thinks everyone is a winner if Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher makes his expected move to Brentford. The Corkman skipped an Ireland session on Monday to complete a medical at the Bees in a deal that could rise to €21 million with performance related add-ons. Dunne told William Hill: 'Caoimhin Kelleher is a great signing for Brentford. I'd actually say they're upgrading from Mark Flekken to Kelleher. Based on the money I've seen reported, it looks like a very good deal. 'Flekken has done well, and he's the type of goalkeeper who understands what's needed. "Kelleher will have to learn a few new things at a new club, and that may take a little time. But in terms of goalkeeping and shot-stopping, this is a big upgrade. Kelleher has proven at Liverpool he's one of the best around.' Kelleher has had to live in the shadow of Liverpool's number one keeper Alisson over the past number of seasons. And former Ireland defender Dunne believes the time is right for the 26-year-old to become the main man. He added: 'It's also a great move for Kelleher himself. The opportunity to play regular first-team football is something he's been craving. "He doesn't want to be the best number two in the Premier League - he wants to be the best number one if he possibly can. That means playing every week and having the trust and confidence of a manager. 'This feels like the right time for him to go and play, and it'll only benefit Ireland as well, with their goalkeepers playing regularly. So I'm very pleased for the national team.'
