Former Ireland international David Meyler returns to Cork City as assistant manager
FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL David Meyler has been appointed as Cork City FC men's first-team assistant manager. Meyler returns to the club, having played at Academy and first-team level before his Premier League move to Sunderland in 2008. The Cork midfielder also played for Hull City and was capped 26 times for Ireland, before a knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 30. Advertisement Meyler, now 36, has since undertaken coaching roles in the Hull City academy and with the Ireland 17s under Colin O'Brien. 'I am really delighted to be back at City, where my journey in professional football started,' said Meyler. 'Since retiring from playing, I have really enjoyed the coaching side of the game and this is an opportunity that I am really looking forward to. 'I have spoken to Ger [Nash, manager] at length about the role and I am excited about what lies ahead. I know that Ger is very keen to have a really strong Cork representation among the players and staff and, as both a Corkman and a former player, this club means a lot to me and I will do everything in my power to help us progress. 'While I have been away from City for a long time, I have always kept an eye out for how the club is doing. I think it is clear to see that there are a lot of very talented players at the club, and I look forward to working alongside Ger and the other staff to help those players in whatever way we can.' 'I think it is important for the club and its identity that there is a 'Corkness' to the club and to my staff. I have been very impressed with the conversations I have had with David so far. I think we are very much aligned in a lot of ways, and we are both young, hungry, passionate coaches who want to make a difference. 'This club produces an awful lot of very talented young players; I have great belief in them and I feel we can give them a platform to go on and deliver on their potential. David has had an impressive coaching career so far, and he can add a lot to what we want to do here.' Meyler will take up the role when City return to action following the upcoming mid-season break. They are currently ninth in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division, level on 12 points with bottom side Sligo Rovers after 17 games.

Cork City appoint Gerard Nash as new manager
CORK CITY HAVE confirmed the appointment of Gerard Nash as their new manager. The 38-year-old arrives less than a week after Tim Clancy handed in his resignation following a 2-1 defeat to Derry City last Friday that left the Turner's Cross club in the promotion/relegation playoff place. Nash is Cork's fifth permanent boss since 2019, following the tenures of John Caulfield, Neale Fenn, Colin Healy and Clancy. A former underage coach with Ipswich Town, Nash then worked as a FAI development officer and high performance coach, before leaving to take charge of Aston Villa's Under-18s and then onto Sweden. He has a long and very impressive track record as a coach, and he really impressed us with his thoughts on taking on the role. 'From speaking to him, I know how motivated he is to take on the job, and I know he will give it everything he has. Everyone at the club wants to see us improve and begin to climb the table, and I share Ger's belief that we have the talent in our dressing room to improve.' Nash won't be in the dugout for Cork's game away to St Patrick's Athletic tomorrow, with academy boss Liam Kearney joined by Greg Yelverton until Nash takes charge for the Galway United clash next Friday.

Cork City boss Clancy steps down
Cork City FC boss Tim Clancy has announced that he is to step down from his role with immediate effect. The club are currently in ninth place in the Premier Division table after losing 2-1 to Derry City on Friday night at Turner's Cross. 'The decision to leave is mine and mine alone," said Clancy, in a statement issued by the club. "I am proud to have brought this team back to the League of Ireland Premier Division, and believe they have so much more to give. "I would like to thank the players, Dermot Usher and the entire staff at Cork City FC for the opportunity to work with them, and wish them the best for the remainder of the season.' Dermot Usher, owner of Cork City FC, added: 'I spoke with Tim this evening, and while obviously disappointed, I fully respect his decision. "On behalf of the club, I would like to thank him for his commitment over the past 18 months, and for everything he has done for the Rebel Army.' The recruitment process for a new manager is now under way, the club stated.
