Brad Widdup is a Group 1 winner and a leading provincial trainer but he is still a country boy at heart and loves getting back to his roots when the right opportunities are there.
The Albury raised Widdup heads wet with a trio of capable runners ready to shine, none more so than High Dandy in the Bankstown Sports Forbes Cup (1600m) which is also a Big Dance Qualifier.
The John Camilleri-bred and owned gelding has improved with each run this campaign starting off with a seventh to Nana's Wish at Canterbury before a fourth to Walking Painting and a second to Glad You Think So both in Randwick Midways over 1600m.

'He has taken a while to get to his peak for one reason or another but his last two runs have been really good,' said Widdup.
'Hopefully he can continue on with that now.
The son of Camilleri's own Group 1 winner Ace High looks well placed in the Cup being a 71 rater with 56kg, just a kilo above the minimum.
Heading the weight for the race is Another One with 65kg although he comes down to 62kg after the claim.
'He gets in well at the weights which is not often the case when you take a horse out to the country,' Widdup said.
'He has good Sydney form and the fact he gets quite a bit of weight off those couple of well-performed, higher benchmark rated horses, I would like to think he will be very competitive.
Widdup has gained the services of Hawkesbury-based jockey Chad Lever who has been on great form since returning to the saddle late last year.
'I was surprised that he is going out there but when we seen his name down for some rides, we were lucky to be able to get him,' Widdup said.
Widdup and lever will also team up with lightly-raced mare Initiate in the Walker Family Showcase Super Maiden Handicap (1300m).
The four-year-old is closing in on her first win after a close second to Divo and third to Capital Jicinta at Wyong before a last start fourth behind Denial at Kembla.
'She is only a little filly but she tries very hard,' he said.
'She is probably still another preparation away from really being at her best but she is going well.
'Hopefully she can knock her maiden off this weekend.
'I don't think barrier eight is a bad draw for her.
'She's doesn't have real early toe so drawing there, hopefully she can slot in somewhere midfield or maybe a bit closer.'
Widdup's final runner for the day is Party Doll in the Club Forbes Showcase Class 2 Handicap (1100m) who will be ridden by stable apprentice, Poppie Gorton.
Gorton was having her first day riding at Bathurst two weeks ago when fourth on Party Doll.
'She drew awkward at Bathurst last start and was slow to begin before she took off around them,' said Widdup.
'She just did a lot of work but it was a good effort to finish where she did.
'She is better on top of the ground and is finding it hard to win a race but John (Camilleri, owner) has been good enough to give Poppie a couple of rides on her and her four kilo claim brings her into this race.
'Hopefully she can begin well and be in the race and I'm sure she will run really well if that's the case.'

Will strip fitter for the run. PERFORMING DIVA (4) over did it in front on debut when fourth at Nowra. Took a sit and ran on well when second to Lombardi Lass at Goulburn. Resumes here and looks for a forward showing. RITA RED (5) has placed in three of her four runs this campaign and will be thereabouts again.
Bet: Caravanserai to win

RACE 3: Walker Family Showcase Super Mdn Hcp 1300m
INITIATE (3) followed a length second to the promising Divo with a third to Capital Jicinta at Wyong after being bumped at the start. Forced to race wide early when fourth to Denial at Kembla last start. Solid form for this. THE CONTRACTOR (2) was spelled after a neck fourth on debut at Dubbo on Apr 7. Handy third at Dubbo first-up then races wide and pulled up lame when fourth at Bathurst on July 21. BLACKFISH (6) makes his NSW debut for the Brett Robb stable. Has claims in three placings in Victoria.
Bet: Initiate to win
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
RACE 4: Club Sydney The Amazing Ben Hall Bullet (Bm82) 1200m
ZOUTASTIC (10) resumed with a fourth at Hawkesbury behind Regimental Colours who won at Randwick last weekend. Went to Grafton and scored a solid win from Stratafy. DEION (6) has had a long campaign but continues to race consistently with two wins and four placings from his last six starts. Led all-the-way to beat Eilrahc at Warren before a third to Smooth Esprit in the Coonamble Cannonball. Carried big weights last two starts and drops to 54kg. CASTLEBAR ROAD (3) was a month between runs when fourth to Durova over 1000m last start. Loves it heavy.
Bet: Zoutastic to win
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
RACE 5: Forbes Shire Council Showcase Country Boosted (Bm58) 1400m
SORRY SUNSHINE (1) ran home nicely under 61kg to beat Freddy's Shock over 1400m on a Heavy 10 at Wagga two starts back. Sat closer and laid out in the straight when fourth to Sunray Lass at Albury. STREET SWAGGER (5) is racing well with a win and two thirds. That Cowra win was his fourth from five ruins on heavy ground. MOTORBOAT (4) raced wide without cover when down the order behind Shropshire Lad in a Highway at Rosehill on July 19 at his first run for a new stable.
Bet: Sorry Sunshine to win
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
RACE 6: Forbes Scrap Metal / Carlton & United Breweries Showcase Hcp (C1) 1400m
DEEPWATER ARTIST (2) defied a betting drift from $5 out to $10 when he came with a closing run down the outside to beat Speed Of Thought over 1175m at Albury. His last 100m suggests he will appreciate the step up to 1400m. UNREAL EXPECTATION (1) followed back-to-back placings on the Acton track at Canberra with a handy win from Metal Magic over 1400m at Bathurst. THOUGHTFUL (3), a relation of fan favourite Happy Clapper, was fourth over 1100m in a Bm58 on the heavy at Goulburn last start. Blinkers off and nose roll on.
Bet: Deepwater Artist to win
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
RACE 7: Bankstown Sports Forbes Cup 1600m
HIGH DANDY (3) ran a nice fourth behind Walking Painting in a Midway at Randwick second-up. Led and just caught late when runner-up to Glad You Think So in another Randwick Midway. Drawn well and will give this a shake. LOUIE'S LEGACY (11) resumed in Federal Open at Canberra without a trial when a half-length second to Craving magic over 1280m. Stepped up to 1600m with a third to Hot Bandit in the Narrandera Cup. Is a winner on the heavy. 13. MORITZ GIRL (13) was doing her best late over 1400m on the Kensington last start. Loves the 1600m.
Bet: High Dandy to win
■ ■ ■ ■ ■
RACE 8: Club Forbes Showcase Hcp (C2) 1100m
ABSTRUSE (6) was held up rounding the home turn when a length third to Selhurst Park at Moruya before coming from a long way back when runner-up to Sutton Vella there last start both over 1010m. The 1100m helps. ROYAL BOMBADIER (7) raced ungenerously in the straight when resuming at Port Macquarie. Much better effort last start when a half-length second to Calido Magic at Gosford. PARTY DOLL (1) did it tough when fourth last start. Handy provincial form before that.
Bet: Abstruse to win

NEXT BEST Race 8 No.6: BARBAROSSA Godolphin colt resuming for new trainer Ciaron Maher, he can make a strong first impression from a favourable draw. VALUE BET Race 6 No.14: SUPER ECLIPSE A lightly-raced mare stepping up to 2000m for the first time. She should be ready to peak third-up at the right trip. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 2 Race 6: 1, 3, 5, 12, 14 Race 7: 1, 2 Race 8: 6, 11 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW JAY FORD only has two rides on Savvy Hallie and Wild Thoughts but tipping he walks away with a perfect record. TRAINER TO FOLLOW BJORN BAKER is coming off a career best season and can continue in the same vein with horses like Shirvington and O'invincible. TAMWORTH TIPS BEST BET Race 4 No.8: PINDORAMA Got back in a leader dominated race last time but got home well enough. The step up to a mile here with Aaron Bullock on should suit. NEXT BEST Race 2 No.9: SEE YOU THEN Knocking at the door with three seconds in as many start to begin her career. She finds another winnable race. VALUE BET Race 5 No.7: ANOTHER PEACH A strong on-speed winner last start at Grafton with runner-up Sawmill franking that form at Moruya on Tuesday. She will give them something to catch. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ KEMBLA GRANGE INSIDE MAIL RACE 1: SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400m) SIRIUS LEGEND (1) is another lightly-raced galloper raced by The Everest-winning owner Bon Ho. The son of Dundeel has made the stable switch to Anthony and Sam Freedman and did more than enough at his first start for them, working home strongly for second at Randwick Kensington. He can go one better here. ANDRON's (2) debut has been a long-time coming for connections with seven trials under his belt over multiple preps. He was doing his best work late in both hitouts this time and has to be a huge market watch. CELLARMASTER (8) and FEAZABEEL (3) can improve second-up. BET: SIRIUS LEGEND to win, saver Andron at odds. RACE 2: MIDWAY MAIDEN PLATE (1000m) It's hard to see SAVVY HAILLIE (11) starting anything other than a firm odds-on favourite. While this daughter of Hellbent is yet to win, she boasts incredible two-year-old form. She was only beaten by subsequent Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Nepotism in Group 3 company before running second to gun filly Tempted in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes to finish her juvenile season. I AM A WINNER (1) has been gelded and could be ready to unlock his undoubtable potential. CUBAN CIGAR (5) has trialled up well ahead of her debut and is among the place hopes. BET: Trifecta 11 (standout) from 1-5-6-8. RACE 3: F&M BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) O'INVINCIBLE (1) is a blue blood mare by Snitzel out of Group 1 winner Viddora that is still lightly-raced. She was a sharp improver last time and only got gunned down late by a stakes-quality horse in waiting in the form of Amreekiyah at Canterbury. She can go one better here. Trainer Bjorn Baker took the country route he often uses to get her stablemate SHIRLEY'S TRIBUTE (8) on the board at Bathurst. It was a nice win and she should take plenty of benefit from it. MAMUSHKA (2), out of Group 1 winner Steps In Time, returns after showing plenty of promise in her first prep. BET: O'INVINCIBLE to win. RACE 4: BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1400m) OCEANFRONT (2) will be one of the first runners for Nacim Dilmi as he begins his training journey in charge of Domeland. He did enough first-up in heavy conditions at Tamworth to suggest he can run well again on what will be a rain affected surface. THE EXTREME CAT (1) has the best form in this race after flashing home for third at this track on July 17. The heavy conditions are the concern with Nathan Doyle also nominating him for Saturday. YOUR NOT THE BOSS (7) is a better horse than what he showed last Friday at this same track and trip. BET: OCEANFRONT each-way. RACE 5: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500m) WILD THOUGHTS (2) has made a promising start to his career with a win and two placings in three starts. His maiden victory came last time with an impressive two length success over 1500m at this venue. The horse that beat him before that, Cold Brew, has since won his next two so the form stacks up. He just needs to handle the ground to win again. AFLOAT (3) is another that broke his maiden well last start, eased down late to score a 1300m event at Hawkesbury. The step up to 1500m looks ideal. The same goes for FORBIDDEN RIFF (7), who got too far back in a 1300m event at Kembla last time. BET: WILD THOUGHTS to win. RACE 6: MAIDEN PLATE (2000m) SUPER ECLIPSE (14) finds herself in an even race filled with chances but she's among the best of them. She was a beaten favourite over a mile at Wyong last time but just looked to find them too slick for her when the speed went on. Stepping up to 2000m third-up should be in her sweet spot. ENTITLEMENT (12) has been knocking at the door with five placings in eight starts. She's rockhard fit, has a good draw and has a favourable on-speed racing pattern. Stablemate ALWAYS SHINING (1) could be a sharp improver stepping up in trip. BET: Boxed trifecta 1, 3, 5, 12, 14. RACE 7: CG&E BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m) SHIRVINGTON (1), like his namesake, can sprint well fresh with the topweight of 61.5kg. The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old was a winner first-up last prep before baking it up with success at this track and trip. FRONTEX (2) is back from a 153-day break. He showed plenty during his first prep with a win and two placings in three starts, breaking his maiden stylishly at Newcastle on March 7. ALIGNED (8) was given every chance to break his maiden last time and delivered at Gosford. He can run well again. BET: Quinella 1, 2. RACE 8: MAIDEN PLATE (1200m) BARBAROSSA (6) was scratched from Canterbury on Wednesday and finds himself at the provincials for new trainer Ciaron Maher. The last time we saw the Godolphin colt, he ran a creditable fourth in the Group 3 Bailleau on a heavy track. He looks ready to run well first-up. ARTISTIC VENTURE (11) is a promising filly that wasn't far away in a pair of Golden Slipper lead-ups, finishing fifth in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes and Group 3 Magic Night Stakes. She's got some class for sure. KENDALIA (2) is a knockout hope at odds in his return. BET: BARBAROSSA to win, quinella 6, 11.

Champion trainer Tony McEvoy to be inducted into South Australian Racing Hall of Fame

When Tony McEvoy was notified he would be inducted into the South Australian Racing Hall of Fame, his first thought was disbelief. Legendary trainers such as Colin Hayes, Bart Cummings and John Hawkes have been members for more than two decades, and now McEvoy, a Group 1-winning jockey and trainer, will sit in their company. 'It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when you mention those names,' McEvoy, a six-time champion Adelaide trainer, said. 'It's very humbling, I'm very proud of my journey, and proud of what I've been able to achieve. 'To have people see you in the light that they've seen me, to put me in this esteemed company – is quite incredible.' McEvoy, 64, left home at the age of 11, and was riding in races at 14, he won the Group 1 SA Oaks aboard the Colin Hayes-trained Deesse in 1977. After over 100 wins as an apprentice jockey, weight struggles saw him eventually turn his hand to training, from foreman at Lindsay Park, to training in his own right, he formed McEvoy Mitchell Racing with friend and businessman Wayne Mitchell in 2011, who's been a long-time supporter. McEvoy has now prepared over 2400 winners, including 16 Group 1 wins – five in partnership with son, Calvin, who has been co-trainer with him since 2019. Despite those accolades, McEvoy was surprised when told he had been chosen by the SA Hall of Fame panel to be inducted on SA Racing Awards night (September 6). 'It was incredible, the phone call, I didn't quite believe it when I first heard it,' he said. 'I felt very honoured, it meant a lot to me the phone call. 'It's an industry that I've made my life and to be recognised this way is quite incredible.' A Hall of Fame career isn't built without sacrifice, McEvoy is aware such success came at a cost. The racing game has no off-season, and the schedule is unrelenting. Unwavering support from wife, Jo, and children, Calvin and Eliza, ensured McEvoy could maintain commitment to his remarkable career. 'I've committed my life to it, I love it of course, but when something like this happens, it makes you think about the people that have given you the opportunity to do it,' he said. 'The people that are close to you are the people that suffer on these journeys because you are so committed to what you do, the people close to you don't get you as much as they want you. 'I think that's the case with my wife, and my kids when they were younger … there was no way I was going to get the father of the year title.' McEvoy met Jo at the Angaston-based Lindsay Park, and she's always understood the demands of the racing game. 'She fully understands it and is fully supportive, without her support, I couldn't have done half the things I've been able to do,' McEvoy said. 'There's also the other people that have given you the opportunity to do well, that starts with your parents of course, when you're a kid, putting you on the right path. 'I've got five brothers, we were all taught from a very young age, you just work hard and try and be as good as you can be, and things will happen for you. 'We've never had any money at any time of our lives, us McEvoys – but I feel we've all had rich lives. 'We've lived our lives well, we've worked hard and got rewarded for it. When I think that back on my journey, it's been lovely and incredible.' McEvoy's first boss was legendary horseman Bill Holland, after leaving home, he lived in a caravan at his Streaky Bay stables, and that kickstarted the journey. 'He put me on the path initially, he was an incredible man Billy Holland, a great person, a very good trainer and very good jockey in his day,' he said. 'He probably did all the hard yards because he got me to a stage where I was competent and that's when Colin Hayes picked me up. 'Colin, thankfully took me under his wing, he liked me, and gave me tremendous opportunities for the rest of my time there (Lindsay Park).' McEvoy shut down his SA training base in 2022, making a full-time move to Victoria, but he remains a proud croweater. 'I'm a very passionate South Australian. Racing there has always been very good to me,' he said. 'Sadly my business forced me to move when racing in South Australia was going through some tough times. 'I personally couldn't see that it was going to improve and I had to make a decision for my business to expand in Victoria. 'Not long after I left SA, things picked up there and racing seems to be going very, very well there. 'That was unfortunate for me, but I was very pleased for all the people in the industry, that they could see some light at the end of the tunnel again.' • Laurie eyes spring carnival success with Group 1 star McEvoy won the 2003 Cox Plate with Fields of Omagh, and Group 1s with wonder filly Sunlight, it's over 50 years in the industry flooded with achievement, yet a Hall of Fame honouring is at the summit. 'It would have to be the pinnacle for me, being inducted into the Hall of Fame,' he said. 'That phone call I got the other day, makes you reflect on all the good times, the bad times, and I think reflection – it's something I never really do much of. 'Having ridden a Group 1 winner, trained some Group 1 winners, and in an elite race like the Cox Plate, they are amazing things to happen to you, but I think this puts the icing on the cake for me.' McEvoy joins his nephew, three-time Melbourne Cup-winning hoop, Kerrin McEvoy, Colin Hayes, and training peer, David Hayes, in the SA Racing Hall of Fame. Star South Australian colt, Sometime, who won the 1963 Caulfield Cup, joins McEvoy as a 2025 inductee.

Joe Pride wary of wet track for Missile Stakes favourite Private Eye

Trainer Joe Pride plans to keep options A, B and C open before deciding if early favourite Private Eye will take his place in Saturday's Group 2 $300,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick. Plan A is for Pride's grand galloper to make his return in Sydney's first stakes race of the season but the prospect of a wet track has the Warwick Farm trainer treading careful heading into the weekend. He has already made a contingency plan with Private Eye nominated for a 1000m trial on Friday morning that would see him line up in the same heat as star stablemate Ceolwulf. Pride wouldn't have to make a decision to Friday morning to decide which way he will go and by then he will have a clearer picture on what the weather is doing this weekend. More race-day rain has been forecast in Sydney this Saturday with Randwick already rated in the heavy range in the lead-up to the feature meeting. 'I would love to run in that Missile on Saturday, I really would and it is plan A but I am fearful of what rain is going to fall on Saturday,' Pride said. 'I will trial him if we don't run on Saturday but there is a Plan B and C for him. 'We could either go to the PB Lawrence first-up and Caulfield or wait to save him for the Winx Stakes. 'The weather is going to dictate but the latest I can leave it is Friday morning and we will work the horse on Thursday morning as usual before making a decision around 6.30 or 7am based on the weather predictions for Randwick.' Private Eye, last seen finishing third in a Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, is the headliner in a field of 10 acceptors for the Missile Stakes. The two-time The Everest placegetter earning early support from punters, shortening from $3.30 into $2.60 favouritism with Nash Rawiller booked to ride. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained General Salute ($3.70) and Bjorn Baker's Robusto ($5.50) are both in the race while Brudenell was $9 into $7.50 in earlier betting. • Pride isn't the only trainer reluctant to run his returning talent on a wet surface with Gary Portelli also revealing his intention to bypass the Missile Stakes with Encap ($18) if the track remains heavy. Portelli could wait for the Group 3 $250,000 Show County Quality (1200m) in two weeks' time with his Doncaster Mile placegetter. Meanwhile, Chris Waller is set to take a heavy-handed approach in the Premier's Cup Prelude (1800m) after accepting with eight runners, three of which landed among the emergencies. By far the most interesting of those contenders is More Felons ($11), which hasn't raced since finishing runner-up to Kalapour in 2024 Tancred Stakes (2400m) after suffering a tendon issue.
