Hee Haw star Lulu Roman, gospel singer with 'voice of an angel', dies aged 78

Metro25-04-2025
Comedian and gospel singer Lulu Roman has died aged 78, with tributes pouring in for the artist who had the 'voice of an angel'.
The star died in Bellingham, Washington, where she moved several months ago to be closer to her son, on April 23, 2025. The cause of death has not been confirmed at the time of writing.
Lulu, real name Bertha Louise Hable, made her name on the comedy-music show Hee Haw, which aired from 1969 to 1993.
In the 70s, however, while recovering from a bout of drug addiction, she reinvented herself as a gospel singer, releasing several albums and even recording with country music icons like Dolly Parton.
Lulu's road to fame was not a traditional one. Born in Dallas, Texas, she was placed in an orphanage soon after her birth and suffered from a thyroid condition that caused her to be overweight.
After graduating from high school in 1964 she started working as a dancer at a local nightclub to pay the bills.
She'd perform under the name 'Lulu Roman, the World's Biggest Go-Go Dancer', and it was during one of these performances that she first met the country singer Buck Owens, who took her under his wing.
'He liked my sense of humour,' she told Florida Weekly in 2020. 'He told me once that he'd just sit and observe me. I said, 'Lord, have mercy!' He said it was really interesting: 'You're a master at quick wit.' I wasn't sure what he was talking about, but I got hold of it later.'
Buck, who was set to star in Hee Haw, then introduced Lulu to the producers, and the rest is history.
Sadly, in 1971, while performing on Hee Haw, Lulu was arrested for drug possession and was given a four-year prison sentence. After this, Lulu found religion, converting to Christianity, and became a gospel singer.
When she came back to Hee Haw in 1973, she'd regularly sing on the show, and this led to her music career taking off.
In 1999, Lulu was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and her autobiography, This is My Story; This Is My Song, was published in 2019.

Lucky person claims £210,000,000 EuroMillions jackpot - could it be you?

A lucky person has finally claimed the record-breaking £210million EuroMillions jackpot. A person in France was the lucky winner with the numbers 24, 31, 34, 41 and 43, while the lucky stars were 06 and 08. One Brit came desperately close to claiming the record prize but missed just one lucky star and won comparatively paltry £182,967.60 All lottery winners have 180 days from the day of the draw to claim their winnings. Recent winners include dearest friends Carly Wiggett and Becky Witt who used a horoscope to win £168,000 each. A family from Cork, Ireland who won £216,000,000 and revealed they plan to stay in their home city, with no 'outrageous plans to spend the cash yet – except maybe a Rolex'. The jackpot reached its cap of 250 million Euros – an estimated £210 million – for this latest draw. But not all big winners have had a fairytale ending, with some falling victim to assassination, abduction, substance abuse and, somewhat ironically, financial trouble. The number of millionaire winners whose lives have taken a turn for the worse has led some to dub it a curse. To win the next week's unprecedented estimated jackpot, entrants must have five winning numbers, as well as two EuroMillions Lucky Star numbers. For the Thunderball, players need to match all five main numbers plus the Thunderball. Black Myth: Wukong sequel revealed but don't expect it anytime soon

Gamescom Opening Night Live closed the show with a follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong, based around a new character from Chinese mythology. The success of Black Myth: Wukong made a follow-up inevitable, but developer Game Science has announced the next game in the series sooner than you'd expect. Almost exactly a year after Black Myth: Wukong was released, the studio has revealed its successor titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui. It's described as a new entry in the Black Myth series and not a direct sequel to Wukong, although it will still be rooted in Chinese mythology. A brief teaser trailer was shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, where we see Zhong Kui riding a giant tiger. Zhong Kui is described as a ghost-catching God who wanders between hell and earth. There is no release date or even a window, but Game Science has explained in a Q&A on its website that the game is 'little more than an empty folder at this stage'. In other words, don't expect it to come out for a few years yet. 'With the project being little more than an empty folder at this stage, there's hardly any game footage we could share,' the studio wrote. 'To keep all hands focused on development, we decided to deliver a CG short to let everyone know that a new project has kicked off.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be a single-player action role playing game like its predecessor, but the studio wants to make 'refreshing changes' to the formula. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. When writing about its reasons for picking this project over a direct sequel to Wukong, the studio wrote: 'Upon completing the journey with the Destined One, we now aspire to take a tentative first step – to build more distinct gaming experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design. More Trending 'Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration and other contributing factors. We are confident that, in this new project, we can make refreshing changes, create new things, while taking a hard look at our past flaws and regrets.' The studio also reaffirmed DLC for Black Myth: Wukong is on the way, and possibly alluded to a sequel, adding: 'And to all the friends who love Black Myth: Wukong: the westward journey won't end here.' Black Myth: Zhong Kui is planned for PC and 'all mainstream console platforms', although it's unclear if that will include the Switch 2. James Bond legend, 72, would consider surprise return as 007 ‘in a heartbeat'

Pierce Brosnan has revealed he would be keen to stage a surprise return to James Bond, more than two decades after he bowed out of the franchise. The 72-year-old began his reign as 007 in 1995 and appeared in four movies in total – GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day – before Daniel Craig took over the role. While we're waiting for any hint of who the next actor portraying the suave spy will be, it was recently announced that director Denis Villeneuve will be helming the upcoming movie. In a new interview to promote his next movie, The Thursday Murder Club, Pierce shared that he would consider a comeback if the filmmaker had 'something up his sleeve'. When asked if he would take up the role again, and whether it was 'time for a senior citizen 007', he didn't exactly say no… 'My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who's going to be the next James Bond,' he told the Radio Times. 'There are many great candidates out there, and I'm sure they're going to make it a spectacle of delight. 'I don't think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat. 'Why not? It's great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?' Someone get Denis on the phone, immediately. Pierce last appeared as Bond in 2002 blockbuster Die Another Day, and is regarded as one of the best 007s in history. This isn't the first time that he has touched on possibly popping back up in the franchise – and admitted that he would be tempted. 'Of course, how could I not be interested? But it's a delicate situation now. I think it's best to let sleeping dogs lie, really. I think so,' he previously told GQ, describing the possibility as 'a rather romantic notion and idea'. He added: 'I think that it's best left to another man, really. Fresh blood.' More Trending The search for a new lead began after Daniel left the role in 2021, following the release of No Time To Die. Although film bosses have not yet unveiled his replacement, speculation has gone into overdrive over who could follow in his footsteps. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Taron Egerton, Henry Golding and Aaron Pierre are just some of the famous faces who have been linked to the franchise. Got a story?
