International cast converge on Meydan Racecourse for Emirates Super Saturday

Gulf Today01-03-2025
Dubai World Cup places are up for grabs as the stars converge on a superb Emirates Super Saturday at Meydan Racecourse on 1 March.
Six of the day's nine races offer automatic entry to corresponding races on the big day on April 5, including the featured G2 Al Maktoum Classic (sponsored by Emirates Airline), over the Dubai World Cup course of 2000metres on dirt.
A full field of 16 line up, including G1 winner Kabirkhan, who aims to bounce back from seventh in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge last time out.
Bhupat Seemar runs Imperial Emperor, who finished in front of Kabirkhan when second to Walk Of Stars in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge.
Seemar also runs Artorius, fourth in the G3 Firebreak Stakes last time, the mount of Pat Cosgrave.
The third Seemar runner is recent course winner Guns And Glory, who will be ridden by Richie Mullen for owner Fitri Hay.
The G2 Singspiel Stakes (sponsored by Emirates Airline) offers guaranteed entry to the G1 Dubai Turf for the winner and nine take their chance.
The favourite is likely to be four-time Group 1 winner Nations Pride, who arrives here off a ninth place in the G1 Pegasus Turf in Florida in January.
Charlie Appleby, who has won this race twice. Appleby also runs First Conquest, two from two at Meydan, the mount of Mickael Barzalona.
Cairo, trained in the UK by Alice Haynes, has enjoyed a profitable Carnival, finishing second in both the G2 Al Rashidiya and the G3 Dubai Millennium Stakes.
Tuz will make UAE racing history if adding the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal (sponsored by Emirates.com) to his haul on Saturday - becoming the first horse to sweep the UAE's Group dirt sprints in one season.
Seemar's charge, who will break from stall five in the field of 12, has been flawless in his last four starts including the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen last March – his target once again.
Colour Up has seen the back of Tuz three times this season already, but Watson hasn't lost faith in Sayed Hashish's star sprinter, despite a below-par fifth in the Listed Jebel Ali Sprint two weeks ago.
Trained by Yoshito Yahagi, American Stage is an intriguing runner who brings a three from six win record with him from Japan, although none of his runs have come at Group level.
Japan, who were last successful on Super Saturday back in 2010 with Red Desire in the then Maktoum Challenge R3, are also represented in the G3 Burj Nahar (sponsored by Emirates Airline) with T O Saint Denis.
Daisuke Takayanagi's six-year-old had an international campaign last year, finishing ninth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile when last seen in November.
Another bringing top level form into the race is the Charlie Hills-trained Ancient Rome, third to Nations Pride in the G1 Arlington Million in August, who tries the dirt for the first time.
The G2 Dubai City of Gold (sponsored by Emirates Airline) is a proven path to the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic and seven run for that entry ticket on Saturday.
Godolphin hold a strong hand, with three runners including multiple Group race winner Silver Knott, the mount of stable jockey William Buick, and G3 Sandown Classic Trial winner Arabian Crown, who makes his Meydan debut for Appleby.
Three British raiders line up, including Highway Robber, an intriguing recruit from the US for Charlie Hills, and Onesmoothoperator, who drops in trip for Brian Ellison having finished third in the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy last week.
The day's shortest turf contest is the 1000metre G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint (sponsored by Emirates SkyCargo) in which defending champion Frost At Dawn runs for trainer William Knight.
Among her rivals is fellow Brit West Acre, so impressive in the G2 Blue Point Sprint last time out for trainer George Scott.

Rebel's Romance claims Grosser Preis von Berlin to register eighth G1 victory

Rebel's Romance recorded his eighth G1 victory and captured the Grosser Preis von Berlin for a second time as he comfortably beat Junko at Hoppegarten on Sunday. Godolphin's most decorated horse was returning to the German course having secured his first top-level success in the same race in 2022, the first of four G1 wins in the country. A superb international campaigner, Rebel's Romance has also gone on to major victories in the United States, where he has won two editions of the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, the UAE, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UK. With Billy Loughnane coming in for the ride, Rebel's Romance broke alertly from his wide draw and the Charlie Appleby-trained seven-year-old tacked over to race in a length second behind Junko. Rebel's Romance closed to within half a length of Junko leaving the back and loomed up on the outside to press for the lead at the top of the straight. Junko rallied after Rebel's Romance established a narrow advantage a furlong and a half out but could not respond to the Godolphin homebred in the closing strides, with three-quarters of a length separating the duo at the line. The victory proved a landmark for Rebel's Romance's sire Dubawi, who has been responsible for 250 Black Type wins in the Godolphin colours. Rebel's Romance is now the most prolific Group winner in the royal blue silks, with 14 Pattern race successes to his name and prize money in excess of £11m, while Billy Loughnane was celebrating a first G1 success in his career. Hugh Anderson, Managing Director of Godolphin (UK and Dubai), said: 'It has been a brilliant afternoon and congratulations to Hoppegarten for a wonderful meeting. It means so much, first for Billy as a young man to win a G1 is fabulous, while Rebel's Romance is a superstar. 'It has been a tremendous weekend and I look forward to talking to our principal, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who will be delighted, as we all are.' Charlie Appleby said: 'What more can you say about Rebel's Romance? He writes his own story. I am delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and team Godolphin, to have a horse who continues to give us such enjoyment at the top level. 'It's a great occasion for Billy, and I'm sure this will be the first of many G1 winners. For him to be able to get his first on a horse like Rebel's Romance, I'm sure it will be a very memorable day. 'I'm delighted for the team, and the story keeps going for Rebel's Romance. It's most likely that he will head for the Canadian International next, and we will form a plan when El Cordobes and Nations Pride return from Saratoga following their runs in the Sword Dancer Stakes.' Billy Loughnane said: 'It's a feeling I can't describe, a feeling of ecstasy. I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and having the opportunity to sit on a horse like this. A big thanks to Will [Buick], I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. Rebel's Romance is a star of a horse' El Cordobes flashes home to take G1 Sword Dancer Stakes El Cordobes enjoyed a perfect US debut as he unleashed a late surge to capture the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 9 August. The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old headed across the Atlantic for his first top-level appearance on the back of several strong efforts in the UK, including winning the G2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival. Vote No was pushed along into an early lead in the 12-furlong contest, with El Cordobes settling on the inner rail in third behind stablemate Nations Pride, until Far Bridge rushed up to go second after the first three furlongs. El Cordobes continued to save ground on the inside, with Padiddle and Rebel Red shuffling the Godolphin runner back to a close sixth halfway down the back. Nations Pride took up the running turning in and soon opened up daylight over the field, with William Buick kicking into a three-length lead approaching the final furlong.

Saeed bin Suroor resurgence powers Godolphin to international double

Saeed bin Suroor, one of the world's most decorated horse racing trainers, is enjoying a timely resurgence in recent days, with eye-catching wins in both Germany and the UK signalling a rich vein of form for his Newmarket-based stable. On Sunday, Bin Suroor celebrated Group 1 success in Munich as Tornado Alert stormed to victory in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis, one of Europe's premier Group 1 races run over 10 furlongs, outclassing older horses on unfamiliar soft ground at Munich‑Riem Racecourse near Munich, Germany. The Too Darn Hot colt, who had already impressed on British turf this season, including a close fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and a runner-up finish at Royal Ascot, looked at home over 10 furlongs despite pre-race concerns about the conditions. Jockey Oisin Murphy gave the Godolphin runner a confident ride, positioning him prominently before making his move two furlongs out. Once in front, Tornado Alert showed his class and stamina, pulling away decisively to win by two and a half lengths. 'Tornado Alert won well and I'm really pleased for him. He's been very consistent this season, always trying hard and showing good form," Saeed said. 'I was a little worried when the rain came and the ground turned soft, but he handled it without any problem today. It's always a good feeling when a young horse keeps improving, and I'm happy for the team and for Godolphin.' Tornado Alert became the fifth Godolphin runner to capture the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis, joining the likes of Kutub, Benbatl, Barney Roy, and Nations Pride on the honour roll. Notably, he is the first three-year-old in the royal blue silks to claim the title. With his adaptability to varying ground conditions now proven, he appears poised for further Group 1 targets over ten furlongs in the months ahead. Then, just two days later, the stable was celebrating again, this time on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood, where Dubai Treasure claimed victory in the EBF Fillies' Handicap under a patient and well-timed ride. The performance further underlined the momentum building behind Bin Suroor's string during this peak summer period. These results mark a welcome return to the winner's enclosure on high-profile stages for Bin Suroor, who has long been a central figure in the Godolphin training ranks. With his base at Newmarket's Godolphin Stable (formerly known as Stanley House Stables) now buzzing, attention will turn to where Tornado Alert lines up next, with more 10-furlong tests likely on the horizon. In a sport where form is everything, Saeed will now be eyeing Europe's late-summer fixtures with growing confidence, buoyed by recent success and the promising form of his stable.
