NOW that summer has officially arrived and the temperatures have gone up, many homeowners may have noticed more and more flies appearing in their houses.
This is because this is the time of year that pesky bugs love the most, as the warmer, brighter days boost their energy levels.

But there are easy ways to get rid of them - including a clever trick with a fan

The start of summer marks the start of their mating season and they can all emerge at once to begin reproducing.
Not to mention, there is also increased food availability, meaning they are often on the search for a tasty snack.
So it's no wonder that homeowners across the country will be trying all different tips and tricks to keep them at bay.
But luckily, you don't have to spend a fortune on professional products to banish flies from your home.
Property experts have revealed that five common household items can help keep your home pest-free.
Paul Gibbens, property pro at housebuyers4u.co.uk, said they work wonders for the home during warmer months.
The key to keeping flies out is consistency. Use these methods together for best results, particularly during July and August
Paul Gibbens
He said: "The summer heat creates perfect conditions for flies to multiply rapidly.
'What most homeowners don't know is that simple items already in their homes can help deter flies better than expensive products.
"The key to keeping flies out is consistency. Use these methods together for best results, particularly during July and August when fly populations reach their peak in British homes."
Stressing the importance of basic hygiene, he added: "Keep food covered, clean up spills immediately, and empty bins regularly. These simple habits make your home much less attractive to flies in the first place."
'These miracle bags should be in every home,' says mum who created a cheap hack to prevent flies from entering your home
1. Apple cider vinegar and cling film
This combination works wonders in catching flies in the home and stopping them from travelling from room to room.
All you need to do is fill a glass with apple cider vinegar, then cover it with cling film and poke holes in the top.
The flies will smell the sweet, fermented scent and try to get to it by entering through the small holes.
However, they will get confused trying to find their way out and will end up stuck inside the cling film.
The experts also added that this mixture works best when placed in areas where flies gather most frequently, such as near fruit bowls or bin areas.
2. Citrus peels
Most people throw away their lemon, lime, and orange peels - but did you know they can help get rid of flies?
The fruit peels contain d-limonene, which naturally repels the pesky critters.
So before you go tossing them in the bin, rub the pells along areas like windowsills, as this will create a barrier that flies won't cross.
Or, even better, leave them in small bowls around the house.
This method works particularly well for house flies and bluebottle flies, which are among the most common household fly types in the UK.

3. Direct fans towards open windows
Fans can become a Godsend in the summer weather, quickly cooling down a room as the temperature rises.
But they also work wonders in helping get rid of flies from the home - and it's a clever trick that requires no prep.
Whether you're lying in bed or working at your desk, all you need to do is direct your fan outside your open window instead of into the room.
Small insects do not have the strength to fly against the wind created by household fans.
So, directing fans out of an open window will blow the flies away, keeping them from getting in.
People are just realising the right way to use your fan to get hot air out of the house
A FAN has become a staple for millions of households across the UK - but while many of us may blow the cool air directly at us, turns out there's another way to use the fan - and it may be more beneficial.
According to savvy TikTokers, there's a 'right' way to use the apparatus in the sweltering weather - and many have dubbed it ''a game-changer''.
Rather than blasting the cold air at your body, some social media users advise to place the fan by an open window, facing away from the room.
This, one savvy man, Simon Johnson, recently explained will ''suck the hot air out of the room''.
To effectively use a fan to remove hot air from a room, position it to exhaust hot air out of a window, while simultaneously opening a second window on the opposite side of the room to draw in cooler air.
For the ultimate cooling effect, you could also snap up an extra fan - and have its cool air blow directly at you.
''I'm definitely not melting tonight,'' said Simon, from South Wales.
And it's not just the Welsh lad who's been raving about this easy hack - another TikToker, Alex The Cleaner, shared how she was keeping cool thanks to simply repositioning her fan.
She said in the video: ''Whoever posted this hack - thank you. 'I feel like I can breathe the air again.
''This feels so wrong but it works so well the fan sucks the hot air out of the room and honestly it works.''
4. Essential oils can make a natural repellent
Another trick that Paul suggests homeowners should try is to create a simple spray using common kitchen ingredients that repels flies - but without harmful chemicals and an unpleasant scent.
To do this, mix equal parts water and white vinegar with 10-15 drops of essential oils in a spray bottle.
Anything like eucalyptus, lavender, or lemongrass should work perfectly.
This solution can be sprayed around windows, doors, and other entry points without damaging surfaces or posing risks to children and pets, unlike some chemical alternatives.
These scents not only deter flies but will keep your home smelling fresh, too.

5. Grow fly-repelling plants
If you don't fancy making your own spray, then an even easier thing to try is to buy plants that naturally repel flies.
Certain plants, including basil, mint, lavender, and rosemary, act as natural repellents for all kinds of insects.
These contain natural compounds that flies find offensive, but humans find pleasant.
Paul recommended placing these plants on windowsills and near doorways where flies typically enter homes.
Plus, they can also work for being fresh herbs in your cooking!

The 3 best privacy fences to buy for your garden – including stylish B&Q buy that will last winter

Plus, everything you need to know about installing a new fence FENCY THAT The 3 best privacy fences to buy for your garden – including stylish B&Q buy that will last winter Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT seems that everyone and their nan is talking about privacy fences this year. Long gone are the days of talking to your neighbours while sunbathing, now we'll do anything to keep them out. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 7 We tried three of the best privacy fences to keep nosy neighbours out Credit: supplied But with over 40 million videos of privacy fences on TikTok alone, it can be hard to navigate which way is the best. So Fabulous Reporter Leanne Hall and Associate Editor Rebecca Miller decided to put three of the most popular methods to the test. While Rebecca has an 80ft fence in her back garden to take care of, Leanne has a front garden on a main road in London - both are subject to prying eyes they'd rather keep out. Ivy Trellis 7 The fake ivy was a cheap and effective method Credit: supplied The ivy trellis has become a popular way to give fences an update without forking out thousands on new fence panelling. The one I picked from AliExpress has a flexible backing which is perfect for me as it's easy to hang on the iron bars of my fence using cable ties. I bought three packs of the Dark Green Grape privacy fence panels in a 50x200 size, each pack of two cost £5.28. This made covering my side of the fence cost just £15.84 - a bargain if you ask me. Fed up with passersby and dreaded Lime bike users watching my every move in the garden, I was eager to get the privacy panels up. It's a simple job and only needs one person to complete. The ivy is super light, making it easy to hold on to while you secure it with cable ties. While you can tell the ivy is fake, it still looked pleasant for the price and with some extra plants potted around, it looks perfect in the summer. Most importantly, it kept neighbours out from seeing inside my garden. 7 You can't see through from the outside either Credit: supplied I hate my new build garden being overlooked so found a 5 METRE privacy fence to block out nosy neighbours for under £30 Bamboo Screening 7 The picket fence offered no privacy for either garden Credit: RM Another popular budget-friendly fence covering is using bamboo screening. Rebecca decided to use the B&Q's Bamboo Split Slat Fencing Screening Rolls for Garden Outdoor Privacy which did the job effortlessly. The privacy screen is 4x2m and costs £44.99, but comes in a variety of heights, making it suitable for all gardens. Rebecca used two screens to cover her side of fence making the hack cost just under £90. To get it up, you'll need long screws and mushroom caps to attach the screen to the existing picket fence every foot or so along. Because of its size, you'll need an extra pair of hands to get it done; one to screw and one to roll it out and hold it tight. After 10 minutes, both screens were up. Rebecca adds: "As for how it screen isn't entirely opaque; there are tiny gaps between the bamboo rods that let some light through. "So unless you and your neighbour have a staring competition, you can't see them. "Plus, when the sun hits it, it leaves a beautiful dappled effect across the grass. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looks." It also comes with a one-year guarantee to make sure it lasts through winter. 7 The finished result! Now I can potter around my garden freely without my neighbours looking Credit: RM How high can a garden fence be? Despite what many people think a garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission for any fence taller than 2m. Any fence under 2m does not need planning permission. However, there are some complications to this. If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft. You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m. But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant. Shower Curtains 7 Putting it up was super easy and took just five minutes Credit: supplied So I decided to take matters into my own hands and buy a shower curtain from Amazon for just £10. I went for a design that featured luscious, thick greenery and a gorgeous lake in the centre so I could attempt to feel like I was on Lake Como while in the heart of London. While many people who have shared the hack online have used a staple gun to attach it to their fence, I had to opt for a different method. Because my front garden has iron bars - I used the hooks that came with the shower curtain and put them through each of the holes. It instantly blocked out the stares from passersby and was much more pleasant to look at than the line of Lime bikes outside my house. Although it can pass as looking quite nice in pictures, in real life it looks like exactly what it is - a shower curtain in your garden. But if you're looking for a quick, cheap and effective method this might be the one for you.

Shoppers 'look younger' in Vernon Kay's 'summery' M&S denim jacket

The presenter and I'm A Celebrity alum was spotted in a video posted on M&S' Instagram page in which he sported as series of their new summer jackets - and one was a hit With summer finally here, many of us are enjoying days where we don't need to worry about wearing a jacket out during the daytime. But come nightfall, it's inevitable - with the typical British weather - that we'll need a lightweight jacket to keep our arms and shoulders cosy. Vernon Kay has teamed up with Marks & Spencer to showcase a few of its sunshine worthy jackets that'll keep the chill at bay without causing the wearer to overheat - and one jacket in particular has shopping loving it's 'good quality' that rivals some of the more expensive denim competitors. The M&S Collection Denim Jacket costs £50 and comes in both a mid blue shade as well as an ecru. Available in sizes M to 3XL in blue and S to 3XL in ecru, the jacket offers a 'new take on a timeless design classic'. Made with a relatively roomy fit, the garment is made from 'soft yet durable' material that ensures added comfort - especially with its smooth lining. Different to your typical denim jacket look - such as the Levi's Trucker, £120, or Wrangler's Classic Denim Jacket, £100 both of which have more of a loose, rounded fit with stitching and silverware decorating the pockets and buttons - M&S' chore style coat has more of a boxy design with two patch pockets on the chest and two larger pockets underneath near the hem. While Vernon Kay sported a series of different jacket's in the video shared on M&S ' Instagram page (including the Faux Suede Harrington Jacket, £70), shoppers were keen to know where to get the first denim jacket from the website, with many people commenting on the post: "Looking smart Vernon", and "Looking summery and sharp". With a 4.8 star rating on the Marks and Spencer website, the brand's Instagram followers aren't the only ones loving Vernon's look as the jacket has an impressive 4.8 star rating, with one shopper citing: "I chose this jacket because the design took denim jackets to a new level of flair. I was not disappointed and love the look and the feel of it - well made and decent material." Although they did reflect: "A possible quibble is that straight pockets do not make putting my hands in them comfortable. Slanting pockets would be easier but would this significantly alter the design?" "Looks fab great fabric fits like a glove great all rounder jacket," said another happy shopper, while a third added: "This jacket is outstanding. It's well-constructed, stylish, and offers excellent value for money. The sizing is spot on—I'm 5'8" and weigh 68kg, and the small size fits perfectly. It's versatile, too: great for wearing over a T-shirt during an English summer, and can easily be layered over a jumper or hoodie when the weather gets cooler." Someone else said it was a "very good product, half the price of some of its competitors." While most comments had no qualms with the jacket, a small number of people offered up some improvement suggestions. One said: "Good quality in general although collar slightly misaligned which is why it gets 4stars." Another four star shopper said: "Only one inner pocket that is oddly on the right side of the jacket. That's unusable to me especially as it is high up," although they did state how they've been told wearing the jacket makes him 'look younger in it'. The exact jacket worn by Vernon Kay is available at M&S for £50.
