TVET Commission Will Build A More Systematic Ecosystem
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The government is confident that the establishment of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission will create a more systematic, focused, and industry-responsive ecosystem.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the establishment of the commission would also optimise resources, prevent wastage, and overlapping of functions among TVET-related ministries and institutions.
'During the tabling of the 13MP (13th Malaysia Plan), Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) stated the intention to strengthen the implementation of the National TVET Policy 2030 through the TVET Commission.
'It (TVET Commission) will serve as a dedicated entity to regulate TVET institutions, monitor the implementation of strategies and initiatives, and ensure coordination across all ministries,' he said when winding up the 13MP debate on behalf of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Responding to an interjection from Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor) on the involvement of Chinese youth in TVET, the Minister of Rural and Regional Development agreed that promotion, information dissemination, and access to application processes and course offerings must be enhanced.
He also praised Lee, who is himself a TVET graduate, for his commitment to efforts in encouraging secondary school students and school leavers to pursue the field.
'The collaboration with him has also drawn Chinese students into TVET. He has become a catalyst in encouraging Chinese students to join TVET, which is a success for the TVET Council thanks to his efforts,' he said.
On the proposed amendments to the Land Act (Group Settlement Areas) 1960 (Act 530), following issues related to Felda land inheritance, Ahmad Zahid said that the government began the review of the act in September 2022 through coordination meetings, technical committee meetings, workshops, and four engagement sessions with the stakeholders in 2024.
He said following this, five main priorities have been highlighted, covering contributions to national policy; protection of GSA land ownership interests; strengthening governance; meeting the needs of the new generation of Felda settlers; and empowering the act to remain relevant.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will draft a law on early childhood education to ensure comprehensive and effective regulation of the sector, in line with plans to make preschool mandatory under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), says Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ). The Education Minister said the move would complement the introduction of the 2026 Preschool Curriculum, which is based on the 2027 School Curriculum Framework. 'The national preschool curriculum will be made compulsory for all early childhood education institutions, with emphasis on human dignity, character building, critical thinking and life skills,' she told the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Aug 20) while winding up debates on the 13MP for her ministry. She said the new curriculum aims to instil confidence, compassion, resilience and social values in children through age-appropriate experiential learning. The enforcement of the Education Act 1996 (Act 550) will also be strengthened to support the policy shift, she said. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that preschool education would be made compulsory from age five as part of the government's education reforms. Fadhlina said the ministry is also expanding access by adding 134 new preschool classes in 2024 and a further 150 in 2025, bringing the total number to 10,175 classes nationwide compared with 10,043 last year. As of June, 129 new classes have already opened at various institutions, including secondary schools, vocational colleges and teacher training institutes. 'For 2026, the ministry targets an additional 250 classes. We are fully optimising available space across all ministry assets to close the gap and ensure that no child, especially from B40 households, is left behind,' she said. Fadhlina stressed that advocacy and parental awareness are equally crucial in strengthening preschool participation, adding that engagement sessions with stakeholders are being conducted widely to shape policies that reflect current education priorities.

Cops questioned four MACC staff among 48 over Ling's appearance, says Saifuddin Nasution
KUALA LUMPUR: Four Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers were among the 48 individuals summoned for questioning by police into the disappearance of Datin Sri Pamela Ling, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail says. According to Saifuddin, Ling's disappearance is being probed under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping with intent to wrongfully confine. 'We have taken statements from 48 witnesses, of which four were MACC officers involved directly in investigations that concerned Ling. 'The case is still under probe and an investigation paper is being completed by an investigating officer before we submit it to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions,' said Saifuddin during his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysian Plan (13MP) in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 20). RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) then raised a supplementary question, asking if the Home Ministry is working with the Immigration Department to determine whether Ling's passport was detected to have left the country. Saifuddin said multiple related agencies, including the Immigration Department, had cooperated to probe Ling's disappearance. According to Saifuddin, the car with which Ling went missing in Putrajaya, was found at Bukit Kayu Hitam, close to the Thai border. 'The incident happened in Putrajaya, but the alleged vehicle was found in the north. 'Collecting information at the borders will surely require cooperating with the Immigration Department,' said Saifuddin. Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) then raised a supplementary question, asking about the government's measures to address the spike in crime recently. Saifuddin said he does not prefer to generalise the crime issue like Mumtaz, as the data on crime that he possesses indicates otherwise. 'According to my data, for every 10 missing people, nine were found, according to police records,' he said, adding that he is ready to reveal the breakdown on whether the missing individuals were found dead or alive. On April 9, Ling was on her way to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to assist an investigation under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. She went missing on the way to the appointment. Her lawyer lodged a police report the same day. CCTV footage showed her being abducted by several men in a car, which was later found abandoned in Bukit Kayu Hitam. So far, no ransom demand has surfaced.

Fahmi raises concerns over influencers riding on Zara's case for profit
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has voiced concern over the actions of influencers who disregard ethics and facts in their pursuit of profit, in light of the case involving Zara Qairina Mahathir. He also warned of a growing trend where netizens blindly believe everything they see on social media without verification. "Social media requires caution. It is not like the mainstream press, where we know there are ethics and journalistic integrity. "That is why the Sabah Journalists Association issued a statement criticising influencers who pretend to be journalists, showing up at certain places and asking questions with the sole intention of producing content for profit. "When viewership reaches millions, there is clearly financial gain for these influencers, but integrity and identity verification are neglected," he said in his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today. Fahmi said he had instructed the Information Department, Bernama and RTM to produce content to help the public understand that not everything on social media is true. "We are seeing a culture where netizens tend to blindly accept whatever they come across on social media. "Some have fallen victim to scams involving AI deepfakes; others believed there was a cable car in Gerik; some even believed false claims that Zara was put into a washing machine. "There are even so-called 'pathologists' giving advice on TikTok Live—individuals who, after verification with the Health Ministry, were found not to be doctors and in fact had a history of scams," he said. Fahmi said he may also get in touch with social media platforms to promote the 'Biar Betul!' segment, aimed at combating fake news and slander. He added that he would work with the Malaysian Media Council, media associations and press clubs to reinforce the need to observe Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which imposes restrictions when reporting on children, particularly in criminal cases. The issue was raised earlier by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan).
