Wrexham bakery worker to participate in 8,000-mile car rally
He and his three friends will undertake the challenge in a Renault Clio 2009 Sport Tourer, a £500 'banger' with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and 138,000 miles on the clock.
The route includes the Pamir Highway, the world's second-highest road in Tajikistan, reaching an altitude of 15,272 feet.
At that altitude, the air is so thin that it could affect the car's engine performance.
Mr Loftus, a senior development technologist, was inspired by the Top Gear trio, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond.
He and his friends, Tom Suter, Jon Fowell, and Hau Ying Baker, met at Shropshire's Harper Adams University, where they bonded over their shared interest in cars.
The group, called No Half Sends, is one of 198 teams participating this year.
Mr Loftus, 27, said: "The Mongol Rally is an organised charity rally that runs each year.
"It started off in 2004, and it sees teams take a small and unreliable car from Prague to Oskemen, Kazakhstan.
"Teams are given a start location and time, and a finish location and time - and that is it.
"There is no set route, so teams must plan their own way.

"The rally organisers like to promote the adventure aspect by allowing teams to come up with their own route and embrace the unpredictability that comes with travelling intercontinentally."
The team has already planned their journey, which kicks off in the UK, followed by France, Belgium, and Germany to reach the Czech Republic.
From there, they will weave through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia.
Finally, they'll pass through Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan before reaching the finish line in Kazakhstan.
The team will have to negotiate a logistical hurdle at the Georgia-Azerbaijan border, which is currently closed.
They will ship their car from Tbilisi to Baku on a lorry, fly across the border, and then continue their journey.

Plan to turn historic Shotton police station into family home refused
Mr Loftus said: "The border is shut between Georgia and Azerbaijan, so we have to ship our car from Tbilisi to Baku on the back of a lorry, and we will fly across the border and then wait in Baku to collect the car.
'Once we've got the car, we are crossing the Caspian Sea on a ferry."
Mr Loftus thanked his employer, the Village Bakery, for their support.
He said: "The support has been great from the whole team at the bakery."
As well as raising funds for the Cool Earth charity, Mr Loftus's team will support five other organisations through their sponsored drive.
These are Lupus UK, the Stroke Association, Grinshill Animal Rescue, mental health charity BEN, and the farming charity RABI.
Village Bakery shareholder Robin Jones said: "I must admit it seems a bit bonkers but I take off my hat to George and his team because it's going to be an epic adventure and they're going to be raising money for some very good causes."
Simon Thorpe, CEO of the bakery, said: "George is a great guy who is a great asset to the team.
"He's a very capable and resourceful young man, and I am sure he is going to need those qualities during this amazing adventure."

Newcastle dressing room could be 'getting a fighter' after Benjamin Sesko rejection
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for AC Milan centre-half Malick Thiaw, and the Germany international has been praised by England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek Newcastle United transfer target Malick Thiaw has been labelled a 'fighter' by AC Milan team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Magpies are in desperate need of some good news after a major setback in their pursuit of striker Benjamin Sesko. It emerged on Wednesday that the RB Leipzig forward prefers a move to Old Trafford over St James' Park this summer. This would deal a blow to Newcastle's hopes of replacing Alexander Isak, who is keen to join Liverpool. Sesko's decision marks yet another near-miss in the market for Eddie Howe and his recruitment team as their Premier League opener against Aston Villa draws ever closer. However, there is some good news yet for the Newcastle faithful. The club have been seeking a central defensive partner for Sven Botman for some time, with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar being relied upon to step into the role until now. Following last summer's unsuccessful pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, the Magpies have set their sights on German international Thiaw. The 23-year-old joined Milan in 2022 but found himself out of favour towards the end of the last season. Even so, former Chelsea and England midfielder Loftus-Cheek, who has previously also been on Howe's wishlist, gave him a glowing review. In an interview with SportWeek, Loftus-Cheek faced a series of rapid-fire questions about his Rossoneri team-mates. When asked to name which of his peers he believes fights the most, he didn't mince his words and swiftly replied: "Malick Thiaw." Although Loftus-Cheek highlighted goalkeeper Mike Maignan as the team's most outspoken leader in the dressing room, it's clear that Thiaw is seen by his peers as a respected and committed personality, traits that could serve him well on Tyneside. Standing at 6ft3in, Thiaw's commanding presence is as noticeable off the pitch as it is on it. Yet he struggled for playing time last season and looked certain to move on from San Siro this summer. However, despite Serie A side Como coming close to sealing a £21.7million deal for the defender earlier in the window, Thiaw channelled that characteristic Loftus-Cheek praised him for, and fought for his first-team place under new manager Massimiliano Allegri. It was reported that Thiaw arrived back from his pre-season break early to impress and did not want to commit to a move away. Allegri has used him plenty in pre-season, including in recent clashes against Arsenal and Liverpool. Despite nearly leaving the club for around £20m, this dramatic change in circumstances now means that a reported fee of £30m or higher would be needed to prise him away. Yet, Sky in Germany claim that personal terms have been settled between Thiaw and Newcastle. Regardless of whether he becomes a Newcastle player, Loftus-Cheek's glowing comments reflect the calibre of player they would be getting should they splash the cash, and manager Howe is another who has heaped praise on him. When asked about the defender last summer, Howe said: "There's no updates on that. I'm always reluctant to comment on these things, but he's a player I know about. Of course I do, from our games in the Champions League against Milan and yeah, he's a very good player, but that's it." Newcastle might have some financial flexibility should the Isak transfer saga end with the Swede leaving the club, and an alternative to Thiaw could be Palace's Guehi, despite the Magpies being unsuccessful in their pursuit of him last summer. The Times reports that Liverpool will not make a third bid for the defender in the transfer window after having two offers turned down. Guehi, whose contract is set to expire next year, is believed to be valued at nearly £50m by the Eagles, with rumours suggesting he could potentially be snapped up for £40m.

The Capital side has announced the signing of the 16-year-old Australian, who replaces Max James in the reserve berth. Academy rider Mark Parker had been filling the void left by James, who quit the Monarchs in April citing a lack of confidence on the track. Loftus, who hails from the Gold Coast, will make the move to the northern hemisphere and ride in both the Championship and National Development League for the Scottish outfit, replacing the injured Kyran Lyden in the Academy setup. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Loftus is no stranger to some of his new team-mates, none other than compatriots Kye Thomson and Justin Sedgmen as he explained. "I know of Justin Sedgmen and Kye Thomson and I've got to know Kye more personally over the past year or so - we practise at the same track in Ipswich [Australia]," he said. "I've been watching his technique going around the track and getting some tips off him. I've watched every single video put up from Armadale, it looks amazing. I'm excited to join the club and meet all the people and race." Loftus will adorn the Monarchs race suit for the first time next Wednesday at Oxford Cheetahs' Sandy Lane followed by a trip to the Redcar Bears on Friday, June 20. He will make his home debut when the Bears visit West Lothian on Friday, June 27. The teenager has only recently moved onto the 500cc bikes after turning 16 in March following a successful career on the less powerful 250cc engines. "I'm number two in Australia on the 250s," Loftus said. "I rode those until I turned 16 in March when I jumped onto a 500 and since then I've been getting better and better on it.
