Fair Game Australia expands sports program, reaching more than 9000 remote at-risk kids
The expansion is part of a $150,000 three-year partnership with Horizon Power which will also support volunteer training and management for the teams who deliver the remote community programs.
Fair Game Australia chief executive Nicki Bardwell said the support had been 'instrumental in allowing the organisation to expand the geographical reach of its health, education and fitness programs'.
'It gives us the operational certainty required to commit to regular program delivery for an increasing number of remote communities across the Kimberley, Pilbara and Mid West,' she said.
'The three-year partnership will enable us to co-fund a community liaison officer and two recreation co-ordinators, enhancing our impact, with greater continuity in relationships and increased opportunity to work closely with communities to co-design programming tailored to each one's specific needs.'
In 2024, Fair Game also ran weekly after-school programs in Kununurra, Broome and South Hedland in addition to its Fit and Healthy in the Outback program reaching more than 9000 kids in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Mid West and Gascoyne, across 30 remote communities.
Horizon Power acting chief executive Krystal Skinner said this reflected Horizon Power's confidence in Fair Game's ability to deliver sustainable, community-driven outcomes.
'Fair Game's programs promote healthier lifestyles but also foster social cohesion, cultural inclusion and environmental responsibility — values that are strongly aligned to Horizon Power's guiding principles,' she said.
This year Fair Game will host activities in Wyndham, Warmun, Fitzroy Crossing, Looma, Port Hedland, Marble Bar, Nullagine, Roebourne, Meekatharra, Wiluna, Cue, Mount Magnet and Yalgoo.
Fair Game also collects and donates pre-loved sports equipment – diverting it from landfill – with almost 15,000 pieces of equipment distributed across WA last year, including footballs, soccer balls and cricket bats.

Horizon Power says customers not affected by Synergy Centrepay scandal
Horizon Power has confirmed that none of its customers have been affected by the Synergy Centrepay scandal which overcharged nearly 3000 vulnerable customers since 2009. On July 14 the Economic Regulation Authority revealed that Synergy had collected cash through Centrepay — a payment service for Centrelink customers — after vulnerable clients had closed their accounts. It found the government-owned utility, which is the monopoly supplier of electricity on WA's main grid thanks to laws banning competition, overcharged nearly 2845 customers since 2009. Horizon Power, who is the main electricity supplier to regional grids across the State, confirmed that a similar situation had not occurred with their customers. 'Horizon Power is aware of recent reports regarding inactive accounts and can confirm our customers have not been impacted,' a Horizon Power spokesperson said, speaking to the Broome Advertiser on July 18. Regulators found Synergy allegedly failed to notify customers that they had been overcharged within the required 10 business day time frame before hitting the company with an enforcement notice for breaching the State's code of conduct for electricity retailing. The ERA believed $2.3 million remains owed to the Centrelink customers Just hours later, Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said there would be an independent review of Synergy's billing systems. Synergy began contacting customers in April and has so far paid back just 30 per cent of the money owed. Synergy chief Kurt Baker — who has been at the helm since January — said the business 'apologises sincerely' to affected customers. He said Synergy had notified the regulator of the breaches. 'We recognise that the Centrepay bill management system is in place to support vulnerable customers and in this instance, they were let down,' Mr Baker said.

New wardrobe service opens in Karratha for locals doing it tough
A permanent wardrobe service has launched in Karratha, providing free new clothing to people experiencing hardship. Through Anglicare WA's Thread Together initiative, the service allows people to choose clothes that suit their needs and personal style, helping restore a sense of dignity and confidence during challenging times. The initiative is part of a broader rollout across the North West, with mobile wardrobes due to launch in Port Hedland, Broome, and Kununurra. Funded by a $20,000 Horizon Power Community Partnership grant, the program has also received support from Horizon Power volunteers, who assisted with transport and assembly of the wardrobe. Anglicare WA chief executive Mark Glasson said while the service had been growing in demand and delivery in Perth, the partnership would allow it to expand into the Pilbara and Kimberley, supporting more West Australians doing it tough. 'More people than ever before are going without suitable clothes, prescription medicines and other essential items, as they have no income left after paying for accommodation, bills and food,' he said. 'An increasing number of women and children have also needed the support of services like Thread Together to start over after escaping family and domestic violence. 'The housing crisis and cost-of-living continues to affect people right across the State, but we know these issues are exacerbated in WA's regions, particularly in the Pilbara and Kimberley. 'People in need deserve the dignity and choice of new clothing, without judgment.' Referrals for the program can be made through a range of local community and social services, including Anglicare WA and headspace.
