Braking is an essential part of driving and knowing when to brake and how to brake correctly is a key skill to ensure drivers, passengers and pedestrians are kept safe
Driving is a crucial skill that many anticipate mastering, with visions of their first lesson leading to the freedom of owning a car. Learner drivers face the choice between automatic or manual vehicles, with manuals presenting an extra challenge for novices due to the need to juggle clutch control and gear shifts.

Regardless of the type of transmission, all learners must master the art of braking. This skill is vital for stopping safely at red lights, pedestrian crossings, and when approaching turns or junctions. It appears that numerous drivers are only now realising they've been braking incorrectly for years.

A TikTok video demonstrating the correct sequence, brake pedal before clutch, has racked up one million views.

The accompanying caption cautions: "Driving is risky, don't drive dangerously!!!" The debate on whether to clutch or brake first has also reached Reddit.
One learner driver shared their confusion: "My instructor tells me to put my clutch down first and then brake."
"However from the videos I've watched online (YouTube and TikTok) it says to brake first and put the clutch down? So which is it?"

The learner added context to their query, noting: "Btw (by the way) I've only been driving in 1st and 2nd gear since I've only had 4 lessons."
A Redditor advised: "Brake first, then clutch. Although if you're only in 1st and 2nd gear right now, it doesn't particularly matter at this point."

They explained the rationale behind the method: "The reason brake first is best practice is because it keeps the engine and the wheels connected (simplistic explanation of it), this gives you the added power of engine braking while slowing down."
They also noted that for beginners: "At the speeds you're doing now? The difference is minimal. It's at higher speeds where this makes a real difference."
Many users on the Reddit thread were surprised to learn that pressing the clutch first isn't the correct approach.

One user expressed their astonishment: "This is groundbreaking for me. I have always been doing clutch all the way down and immediately brake after."
Another chimed in with a safety tip: "Brake first, to illuminate your brake lights."
A third, who identified themselves as an approved driving instructor, clarified: "Brakes first. When you're in first gear though you can get away with both at the same time."
They further advised: "But when you're braking to slow down for corners, or from higher speeds, it definitely is brakes first."
The consensus for stopping or slowing down a manual car is to apply the brake before the clutch, which aids in maintaining control and prevents the engine from stalling.
However, at very low speeds (below 10 mph), you might press the clutch first to avoid stalling.

I moved flats & my passive aggressive neighbour's response to my parking is out of hand – people say she's ‘entitled'

People had a few different theories regarding the notes TAKE NOTE I moved flats & my passive aggressive neighbour's response to my parking is out of hand – people say she's 'entitled' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WAR between two neighbours kicked off after one left a series of passive aggressive notes on the other's car. The driver, who recently moved into the new flat, was left scratching her head when she discovered the Post-it notes on her vehicle. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 The notes left the driver scratching her head Credit: Reddit 2 It turned out it was the pesky neighbour who was in the wrong Credit: Getty The first of the series of notes boldly said: "RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOUR. Stop parking in their paid, assigned spot. It's just rude!" But the driver decided not to move her car, since she was sure she was in fact in the correct space. That's when the mystery neighbour began leaving more notes. "I've tried to be kind but you ignored my note," the second said. "You could've been towed a week ago. PLEASE let me park in the spot I've had for years. THX [sic]." And the neighbour continued their tirade with the next note, which read: "NOT YOUR SPOT PLEASE STOP taking it! THANK YOU." "I PAY FOR THIS SPOT and would like to use it. Please and thank you," they added in a fourth. After sharing the notes on Reddit, the driver decided to check with the real estate office to see if they were in the wrong or not. But they confirmed she was parking in the right space, which was allocated to her flat. They explained: "I took their notes off and placed a note on my own windshield saying something to the effect of 'I checked with the office and this is my spot. You should check with them too.'" Major New Driving Laws for Summer & Fall 2025: What You Need to Know After leaving the note they noticed it had vanished from their neighbour's car, and no new notes appeared. At this point, fellow Reddit users were left baffled as to why the neighbour thought the spot was theirs. The consensus was that the neighbour must've been parking in the wrong space for years and either didn't realise or forgot about it. "If I was wrong and did this, I would be so embarrassed and offer up an apology and probably a gift," one person commented on the viral post. "The irony of being mad someone took the spot that you've actually been the one stealing," a second added. But not everyone was convinced it was such an honest mistake - even if the notes were slightly passive aggressive. Some thought the neighbour knew the space wasn't theirs, but since they'd been in it so long they didn't want to leave. "They just feel entitled to this spot even though it isn't assigned to them," one said. "Seems like someone just parked there for free since the complex hadn't sold it. "Now they're sad to see it go and were hoping that you were parking there for free, too," another mused.

MG Motor UK IM6 Interior Layout & Technology

Interior What is it like on the inside? It's not very inspiring in here. You get a steering wheel, a ginormous 26.3in display, a second 10.5in touchscreen beneath it and… not a lot else. You could say there's elegance in simplicity, but the design team must've had plenty of free time to kill on YouTube. Which you can do on the screen, incidentally. Let's start with the switchgear: there's barely any. Hazards, windows, door-releases, stalks for the drive selector and wipers, and a pair of (nasty) scrollers on the wheel. Everything else is digitised. Including the air vents, which – of all the modern automotive fubars – might be the worst of the lot. Ugh. Advertisement - Page continues below We're not fans of the interface: it's like a pirated copy of Tesla's system, with far too many menus on account of there being far too many functions on it. MG will say that customisability (you can add shortcuts to the main screen for the stuff you use most) gets round that problem and you'll no doubt get familiar with it after a while, but you spend so much time fiddling with it you inevitably lose focus on the road. Not good enough. There's also a Tesla-aping display that shows you other vehicles in your immediate surroundings. It's not 100 per cent accurate, so think of it as an aid rather than an excuse to ignore your blind spots. Rear visibility is cack, although there's a rear-facing camera to make up for it. The IM6 is another of those that will bombard you with warnings. Bring ear plugs. It's up against some well-made stuff. Is quality up to scratch? The colourscape is pretty dour (there's a white alternative if you prefer) but everything seems to have been glued and stitched with precision. Leather abounds, and holy macaroni are those carpets plush. You're not meant to drive barefoot, but oh boy if you could… Advertisement - Page continues below There are some plastics that let the side down, and the steering wheel looks a little plain for a £50k car. You could say that about the styling in general, to be honest. And what about space? That's this car's forte, right? Sure is. At almost five metres long there's bags of room to stretch out inside, with those up front treated to very comfy seats – the driver's one has a massage function as standard. Centre console storage isn't up to much and the stowage space beneath it hasn't got much of a lip, so items down there are at risk of slipping underfoot if you turn too quickly. That main bin is climate controlled. Anyone in the back is reliant on the front seats being jacked up for maximum foot room, but the rear bench – although rather flat – is reasonably padded, and it feels airy back here because of the panoramic sunroof. The boot is a colossal 665 litres, with space under the flat floor and a 32-litre frunk. So if this doesn't cover a trip away your next move is to hire a motorhome. The boot release button has been integrated into the logo. Neat!

Avoid hitting your tyre into kerb with driving expert's easy two-step method

Whether you've been driving for a few months or years, getting out of a parking spot isn't always an easy task. Now here's a simple trick to help you master it every time It doesn't matter if you're an expert at driving, certain tasks behind the wheel can often be difficult. Sometimes road signs, like the two "confusing" lines on a kerb or the meaning of a certain road marking, could be enough to leave motorists scratching their heads. ‌ Now those who find it painful manoeuvring out of a parking space will know the struggles of hitting their tyre into the kerb. But it doesn't have to be hard anymore as popular TikTok user @master_driver666, who has 1.4million followers, recently revealed how to safely leave a parking space without jamming your wheels into anything. ‌ In a recent upload, the driving guru captioned her video: "How to safely leave a parking space without hitting the steps." ‌ It shows a big red car slamming their tyre into the side before a voiceover is heard saying "no" and then it happens again with the back of the wheels. Seconds later there's a simple explanation as to how to master the technique by aligning the passenger's door handle with the edge of the kerb. Then at that point, you can turn to the side and leave the space without making any damage. The trick is just seconds long so you don't need to spend much time faffing with getting all your angles right. Just follow two simple steps – stop when your handle is in line with the kerb and then leave the spot. Since it was shared, the video scooped over 5,200 likes and dozens of comments. ‌ One pointed out: "Just look at the mirror." While another added: "It's called a wide turn all truck drivers know that expert car drivers." Although the Highway Code doesn't have a rule specifically against "hitting the kerb", it has guidance on how to avoid mounting it as the practice is dangerous and can lead to a major fault on a driving test. Rule 2 on page 4 advises motorists to avoid hitting the kerb while being aware of pedestrians on the road and ensuring safety around other drivers. Many learners might even assume hitting the kerb will result in an instant fail, but it's not always the case. It could, however, be marked down as a major as a simple touch or clip during a manoeuvre is only a minor.
