Chancer McPatrick Gives Chad Brown Sixth Triumph In Curlin

Flanagan Racing's dual Grade 1-winner Chancer McPatrick secured a thrilling first win around two turns in Thursday's $135,000 Curlin presented by Casamigos, a nine-furlong Listed stakes for sophomores who have not won a graded stake at one mile or over in 2025, at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Five-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown, who also sent out the favored Strategic Focus to finish third, earned a record-extending sixth Curlin victory to go along with Street Life [2012], Connect [2016], Highest Honors [2019], Artorius [2022] and Unmatched Wisdom [2024].
Chancer McPatrick successfully stretched back out after a seventh in the muddy seven-furlong G1 Woody Stephens presented by Mohegan Sun on June 7 here, which followed a pair of two-turn Kentucky Derby trail efforts including a second in the 1 1/16-mile G3 Tampa Bay Derby in March at its namesake oval.
The McKinzie bay was an impressive late-rallying 3-for-3 around one-turn last year, including G1 wins in the Hopeful here and the Champagne at Belmont at the Big A, as well as a local debut graduation.
'What's proven is that he really likes a dry Saratoga track now. He's 3-for-3 on a dry track at Saratoga. He showed a lot of heart, as he did in his previous two starts on dry tracks at Saratoga,' said Brown. 'They were very courageous efforts in his maiden and the Hopeful.'
Piloted by Irad Ortiz, Jr. for the first time in the afternoon after being ridden by Flavien Prat in his prior outings, Chancer McPatrick exited the inside post smoothly and took fourth position behind the Prat-piloted Strategic Focus as Crudo showed the way with mild pressure from So Sandy through an opening quarter-mile in :24.27 on the fast dirt.
'I broke inside and I saved all the ground,' said Ortiz, Jr. 'I had no problem to get clear down the lane and run them down. I had the horse, too. He helped me.'
Crudo led down the backstretch, followed by So Sandy, Strategic Focus, Fountain Lake and the ground-saving Chancer McPatrick as the half-mile elapsed in :48.32. Heading into the far turn, Strategic Focus made an eye-catching move to close in on Crudo through three-quarters in 1:11.59 and soon pass, but the race was not over.
Strategic Focus, once straightened for home, did not draw off like it appeared he might at the top of the lane, and the Jose Ortiz-piloted So Sandy was in hot pursuit down the center of the course with Chancer McPatrick just inside of him.
Strategic Focus still led after one-mile in 1:36.43, but the pair passed him as he switched back to his left lead late, and within the final sixteenth it was Chancer McPatrick battling with So Sandy and putting his head in front amid a few bumps in a final time of 1:49.71.
'It was not a lot of contact; it was one good bump very close to the wire,' said Ortiz, Jr. on the duel with So Sandy. 'I was looking for him because my horse loves to fight and his horse changed leads I think and reacted. We had contact, but it worked out good.'
Strategic Focus was a half-length back in third, with Crudo hanging on for fourth. Fountain Lake and Hypnus completed the order of finish. Just a Fair Shake and Uncaged, entered in tomorrow's 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Amsterdam presented by Albany Med Health System, were scratched.
'I thought my other horse was just going to run off the screen. He galloped past the leader, and it looked like he got to the eighth pole and just stopped,' said Brown. 'And then here comes Chancer and it was a good battle down to the wire. It seemed like when he got bumped, it emboldened him to come back.'
Brown opted for the Curlin for Chancer McPatrick rather than shortening up in the Amsterdam, and this could now serve as a prep for the Grade 1, $1.25 million DraftKings Travers on Aug. 23 here, which is the path Brown took last year with Unmatched Wisdom.
'I'm glad that we actually chose this,' said Brown. 'Surely our dream would be to try to get him out to a mile and a quarter and hope for dry weather on Travers Day if he's a horse for course.'
Jose Ortiz said the Cherie DeVaux-trained So Sandy was game in his fight with Chancer McPatrick and stakes debut off an optional claiming win in June at Churchill Downs.
'He put a head in front I think, switched to the left lead and kind of ducked in a little and bumped the winner,' said Ortiz. 'Maybe if I win, maybe I get taken down anyways, but I think it was a huge improvement for him.'
Bred in Kentucky by Rigney Racing, Chancer McPatrick, a $725,000 purchase at the 2024 OBS Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, is out of the winning Bernardini mare Bernadreamy. His second dam is Grade 1-winner Dream Empress.
He banked $74,250 in victory while improving his record to 8-4-1-0 and returning $10.60 for a $2 win bet.
Live racing resumes Friday with a 10-race card featuring the Grade 2 Amsterdam presented by Albany Med Health System in Race 9. First post is 1:10 p.m. Eastern.

Lionel Messi Exits Inter Miami's League Cup With Apparent Leg Injury

Lionel Messi limped out of Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Mexican club Necaxa after just 10 minutes on Saturday with an apparent leg injury. Messi was sent tumbling to the turf four minutes earlier, when he was involved in a collision with Necaxa defender Alexis Pena at the top of the visitors' penalty area at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The living legend, who celebrated his 38th birthday last month, tried to continue. Messi needed to be treated by Miami's training staff on the pitch before walking slowly to the sideline and then to the Herons' dressing room. He was replaced by fellow Argentine Federico Redondo. Miami opened the scoring seconds after Messi exited, with Herons newcomer Rodrigo De Paul — Messi's teammate on Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad — setting up Venezuelan attacker Talasco Segovia's blast from outside the box. It was De Paul's first assist for his new club. The night soon took another wrong turn for the hosts, though, as Inter defender Maximiliano Falcon was shown a straight red card in the 17th minute. Necaxa would capitalize on their man advantage by equalizing before the first half was finished. Miami, the 2023 Leagues Cup champion, won its 2025 opener 2-1 over Atlas last Wednesday. The Herons round out the first phase of the competition, which includes 18 MLS representatives and all 18 teams from Liga MX on Aug. 6 against UNAM Pumas. Deterministic Punches Breeders' Cup Ticket With Assertive Fourstardave Score

Deterministic Punches Breeders' Cup Ticket With Assertive Fourstardave Score originally appeared on Paulick Report. Deterministic has been hard to stop since switching to the turf in the spring of 2024, and he'll get a chance to go for his biggest win yet after securing a "Win and You're In" berth for the Breeders' Cup Mile, following a charging victory in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga Race 4-year-old Liam's Map colt was a challenger for the lead early on under jockey Kendrick Carmouche, who sat in second behind pacesetter My Boy Prince through the first turn and into an opening quarter-mile in :23.83 two remained the leaders across the backstretch, tracked in the second flight by longshot Lagynos and Win for the Money. My Boy Prince continued to maintain a 1 1/2-length cushion over Deterministic at the halfway point in the one-mile race, passing that pole in :47.56 seconds. The lead duo separated themselves from the rest of the pack in the final turn, and Deterministic began to move in earnest as they hit the home straightaway. First urging with a left-handed crop, then switching to the right, Carmouche and Deterministic took control with one furlong to go, and drew away to win by 1 1/4 lengths. French-bred Intellect closed hard after saving ground into the final turn to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Win for the Money, who nosed out pacesetter My Boy Prince for 2 winner Neat was pulled up shortly after the wire after finishing last, and jockey Junior Alvarado quickly dismounted. Per the NYRA veterinary department, Alvarado felt the colt was not traveling well, after the wire, prompting him to pull up and get off the horse. Neat was given a precautionary ride back to the barn in an equine ambulance, where he will receive further stopped the clock in the one-mile race in 1:33.87 over a fast turf course. He paid $11.20 to win. The Fourstardave was Deterministic's third straight victory, and the third time Carmouche has been aboard. The streak started with a 4 1/2-length triumph in the G2 Fort Marcy Stakes on May 3 at Belmont at the Big A, then he earned his first Grade 1 score in the Manhattan Stakes on June 25 at victory improved Deterministic's record to seven wins in 13 starts for trainer Miguel Clement and owners St. Elias Stable, Vicarage Stable, Ken Langone, and C. Steven was bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms, out of the winning Speightstown mare Giulio's Jewel. He sold to St. Elias Stables for $625,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, from the Hinkle Farms consignment. G1 FanDuel Fourstardave Quotes - Courtesy NYRA Notes TeamMiguel Clement, winning trainer of Deterministic (No. 8, $11.20): " He looked great. He has tactical speed so you can use it. He was moving very well. I think Kendrick [Carmouche] was just waiting to make his move. When he went for it, he went big. The horse delivered. He is a top-class horse. He's won on multiple surfaces over a wide range of distances. He makes us look good because he is top-class."This is great. It is very rewarding. He was my first Grade 1 winner. It's a great day. He is top class."About how he felt about the early fractions: "Beyond bullish. I thought Jose Ortiz [No. 2, My Boy Prince] was in front and slowed them down. I told Kendrick to break well the first 50 yards, and then you decide to either go for it or sit in second. On paper, those were the two most logical speeds. They were able to dictate the pace and control it from the front end. It made the closers virtually impossible to come back."About a start in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on September 13 or the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile on October 4 at Keeneland: " Maybe the Woodbine Mile, maybe the race at Keeneland, but I'll speak to the connections. Let's see how he comes out of it and then we'll come up with a plan afterwards." Kendrick Carmouche, winning jockey aboard Deterministic (No. 8): 'My horse broke very good like always. I saw Jose Ortiz [aboard No. 2, My Boy Prince] ride his horse out of there pretty good, and once I looked around and I saw nobody that was within a length and a half behind me in the first quarter of a mile, I pressed the e-brake, just let him settle. I thought when I turned on the backside, he had a horse run up on the backside of him, about a length and a quarter, and man, you can feel him – he [was] wanting to go and I say, 'oh, I'm OK, I can feel him.' I thought they went a pretty slow pace for these types of horses. Once I got to the turn, I let Jose's horse switch leads and I just figured I should bring the race to him because my horse runs good around the turns. He loves to hold horses off because he loves to feel it whenever they're coming, so with that being said, I thought I'd done the right thing out there to make us a successful [team] today.'Miguel [Clement] and his team came back again in another Grade 1. What an excellent job by Deterministic to just come out here and keep competing. I know Christophe [Clement] is so happy for his son up there - and my dad - so we've got to keep this moving. We're going to the Breeders' Cup next, even better – tighter turns, shorter stretch.' Flavien Prat, jockey of runner-up Intellect (No. 6): 'I thought I was in a good position. He gave me a good run. I had a good trip, saved ground and he made a good run.'Dylan Davis, jockey of third-place Win for the Money (No. 5): 'He ran great. I was in the garden spot there, sitting behind the leaders and saving ground on both turns. Wheeled him out there around the bend, but Deterministic got a little turn-of-foot on me, but 'Win' [for the Money] was nice and steady to the wire. I just think that that little turn-of-foot [from the winner] got him, but he ran well and I was very happy with his effort.' Umberto Rispoli, jockey of ninth-place beaten favorite Johannes (No. 3): 'I got knocked out of the gate right away. Coming off a layoff like that of six months [and] to get a huge bump out of the gate, it shuffled me a few lengths back. Going into the first turn, a really tight turn, I was in a spot, but then I had to come back because I didn't have enough horse [to hold position] and I would have put him in a bad spot. He kept clipping heels, and it definitely wasn't the place I wanted to sit around the course, but I know he's a horse who's capable of catching them in a couple of strides. The tight turns didn't help, and he kept switching his leads. Hopefully, he will come back sound because My Boy Prince hit me really well out of the gate. Going to regroup, go back home and see what happens.' This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.
