Rwanda gears up to host historic 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali
The announcement, shared Wednesday on the government's official social media account, expressed the nation's excitement about welcoming the world's elite cyclists to race through
the vibrant streets of the capital.
"Kigali is excited to host the world's top cyclists as they compete in this landmark event," the statement said.
To ensure a safe and seamless competition, the authorities will implement temporary road closures along designated race routes at specific times during the week-long championships, it added.
All schools in Kigali will be closed for the duration of the event, from September 21 to 28, according to the statement.
The Ministry of Education will work closely with school administrators and parents to ensure a smooth transition. To minimize travel disruptions, traffic authorities will provide clearly marked alternative and detour routes in advance.
Special fan zones will be set up across the city, giving spectators the chance to experience world-class cycling up close.
As part of the celebrations, locals and tourists are invited to "Visit Rwanda" and explore the nation's rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and renowned hospitality.
According to the statement, the government has promised regular updates leading up to the event to keep the public informed and prepared for what it describes as a "once-in-a-lifetime moment in Rwanda's sporting history."

Coco Gauff reaches last eight at Cincinnati Open
Ohio (USA), Aug 14 (UNI) World number two Coco Gauff beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-2 6-4 to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. The two players had progressed to the last 16 in contrasting ways, with Gauff having won her only match in straight sets before a walkover against Dayana Yastremska in last round. Bronzetti, on the other hand, had come through in three sets in her previous three rounds and the world number 61 quickly found herself 3-0 down. Gauff was broken in the fifth game but it proved a brief blip as she went on to win the opening set in 33 minutes. The American went 2-0 up in the second set but suffered another lapse when she was broken to love by the Italian in the third game. Bronzetti raised her game and had a break point at 2-2, only to send a backhand return long as Gauff managed to hold. The second set was a more competitive affair but Bronzetti double-faulted twice when serving to stay in the match and Gauff went on to break and secure victory. "For the most part I played aggressive," said Gauff, who won the Cincinnati Open in 2023 before going on to win the US Open that year. "Maybe there were a couple that were a little bit passive in some of those games but it's tough - the balls are super light and she wasn't giving me much pace. "I was just trying to play controlled but also aggressive and, for the most part, I think I did well." Gauff will play the winner of the match between Italian Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in the next round, according to a BBC news UNI BM

Maxwell prepares to shine in new role ahead of T20 World Cup
Cairns, Aug 14 (UNI) As Australia ramp up their preparations for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Glenn Maxwell is prepared to shoulder added responsibility. With the marquee tournament set to be staged in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell has been working increasingly on his bowling inside the Powerplay to come handy in the sub-continental conditions. "I think in the sub-continent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces,' Maxwell told reporters in Cairns ahead of the third T20I against South Africa. "So it might be something we think about heading forward," he said. Maxwell is no stranger to bowling in the Powerplay, with his standout moment coming in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final in 2023, where he famously dismissed Rohit Sharma, setting the stage for a sixth World Cup win for Australia. So far in the ongoing T20I series against the Proteas, Maxwell has bowled two overs inside the Powerplay. The all-rounder made a big impact in the second match, claiming two key wickets — including that of Proteas skipper Aiden Markram, an ICC report said. 'I'm just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. I love getting wickets," he said. "It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the Powerplay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can," Maxwell said. Maxwell also opened up about his floating position in the batting order, having come in at No.5 in the second T20I after batting at No.7 in the first. This follows his stint as an opener in four of the five T20Is against the West Indies. "I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down. I'm filling holes at the moment," Maxwell said. "Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings)," he said. "I am trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible," Maxwell added. With the series tied at 1-1, Australia and South Africa are set to face off in the all-important decider on August 16. UNI BM
