The 'Socialist' Legacy: Nitish Kumar Refuses To Pass Baton To Son, Stays True To Ideals
While many expect his son Nishant Kumar to step into the political ring this election, Nitish Kumar is learnt to have remained reluctant.
With Bihar gearing up for a high-stakes and crucial election, the question of who will succeed the state's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is growing louder, and also getting more complicated. While many expect his son Nishant Kumar to step into the political ring this election, Nitish Kumar is learnt to have remained reluctant, and wary of being branded a political dynast in contradiction to his lifelong commitment to socialist ideals.
The JD(U) supremo, now a veteran of Bihar politics, has always positioned himself as a custodian of Lohiaite socialism, a creed that frowns upon political inheritance. Unlike his contemporaries including the RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav who have openly promoted their children, Nitish has kept Nishant Kumar away from the public eye, often reiterating that his son has no interest in politics.
But the shifting political landscape and the need for succession planning within JD(U) have made Nishant's name resurface in party circles. With a few factions in the party seeking Nitish's approval for Nishant Kumar's candidature this election and with an ally, Upendra Kushwah, national president of Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) and a Rajya Sabha member, making a public statement on it, the situation now looks a bit politically intricate.
Talking to News18, a senior leader of JDU said, 'We are still not sure about Nitish Ji's succession plan. But he has advised us to be patient and trust his instincts. Kushwah ji's comments on X did not go down well with him. He is a socialist leader, and he does not believe in a political dynasty. He thinks that the party and people choose its leaders when the time is right."
No Dynasty, No Drama
Yet, Nitish Kumar's own instincts remain guarded. 'For someone who rose through the JP movement and has built his image on merit and anti-dynasty credentials, endorsing Nishant as the JDU successor could dilute decades of ideological posturing," said a senior JDU leader, who is known to be close to the chief minister.
With the NDA alliance recalibrating its power equations post-2024, the pressure is mounting for Nitish to either name a political heir or risk leaving a vacuum in the state and his party. The dilemma reflects a deeper paradox, the tension between legacy and ideology, between familial instinct and political principle. However, Nitish Kumar is still standing.
Adding to the BJP's confidence is a quiet but significant development. Sources in party ranks said that Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar's son, will not contest the 2025 elections. Neither Nitish nor the BJP wants a dynastic narrative attached to the JD(U) patriarch's final innings. The election will be fought over employment, arresting migration and governance – issues that helped Nitish make his brand.
Meanwhile, the BJP now sees a rare window to assert dominance in the state and restructure the NDA without legacy baggage.

Govt open to reviewing RTI rules amid misuse concerns
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Tuesday informed the Legislative Assembly that it was open to reviewing rules under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, after MLAs across party lines voiced concerns that the law was being misused by activists to 'harass' and 'blackmail' officials. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil made the statement while replying to a question by Bailhongal Congress MLA Mahantesh Koujalagi, on behalf of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, during the Question Hour. 'RTI is a revolutionary legislation by the central government to bring transparency in administration. But, the state government can frame rules under the act. If we come to know about the misuse, we can take action,' he said. 'By reviewing the rules, if harassment can be prevented and it will benefit the RTI activists (who are genuine), we can discuss in this regard with the Chief Minister and we can do it... We will think about steps to limit the misuse of RTI.' Raising the issue, Koujalagi said the RTI Act was enacted with good intentions, but was also being misused, and also suggested that the government consider increasing the RTI application fees. 'We see RTI applications being filed through proxies. Repeated applications are filed by some people just to harass officials. The cost per page is fixed at Rs 2, this is causing the problem. For BPL applicants, there is no fee for up to 100 pages. This is leading to a lot of misuse,' he added. In some cases, information spanning 20 years is being sought under the RTI Act, forcing assignment of an official solely to provide details, he said and urged the government to address such issues. In response, Patil said the government has blacklisted 26 RTI activists and noted that State Information Commissioner Ravindra Gurunath Dhakappa was dismissed after being trapped by the Lokayukta. He, however, said no written complaints of harassment were received from officials. He also said the government would consider revising the RTI fees. Intervening, BJP MLA Sunil Kumar said RTI Act was misused by some individuals for personal gain rather than public interest. Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal too remarked that RTI has become 'a big business' for some people. 'They blackmail officials, elected representatives and contractors,' he said, urging the government to investigate assets owned by RTI activists, and take action against them. Senior BJP MLA Suresh Kumar said, RTI applicants should have a valid reason to seek information, and this should be considered while framing rules.

BJP demands statement by HM to end rumours
Bengaluru: The BJP on Tuesday raised the issue of the Dharmasthala murders in the Assembly and urged Home Minister G. Parameshwara to make a statement on the case to put an end to rumours circulating on social media and in society. BJP MLA and state General Secretary V. Sunil Kumar, raising the matter during Zero Hour in the Legislative Assembly, said that for the last 12 to 13 days, developments have been taking place targeting the religious centre. 'We welcome the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and have no objection to bringing out the truth. However, under the pretext of investigation, attempts are being made to degrade and defame a Hindu religious centre,' he stated. 'If social media reports and statements are taken into consideration, it is clear they are targeting Dharmasthala. It is an attack on our faith and devotion. We have information that even after 16 sites have been excavated, as per the statements of the unidentified complainant, nothing has been found,' he said. 'I urge the state government to put an end to these rumours. In which direction is the SIT investigation heading? Before the matter takes another turn, information should be shared. If the complainant makes claims, authorities cannot go on digging hundreds of sites. Action should be taken against those indulging in propaganda,' he urged.'The government should maintain the sanctity of the Dharmasthala pilgrimage centre. The Home Minister should make a statement on the progress of the investigation. How many more sites are you going to excavate?' Sunil Kumar asked. Responding, Home Minister G. Parameshwara said that following a complaint and a demand from the local community on July 19, the SIT was formed, and the investigation is in progress. The probe should be completed within the given time frame. 'It is not possible to excavate hundreds of sites. After the investigation reaches a certain stage, the SIT will submit a report, and I will make a statement then,' he said. Former Minister and BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar pointed out that Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had said that the Mangaluru police were competent to conduct the probe and that the SIT was formed due to pressure from Leftists. Clarifying, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said, 'We are siding with no one.
