Astros to sign 9-time All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel: Sources

BALTIMORE — The Houston Astros are in agreement with nine-time All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel on a major-league contract, league sources told The Athletic on Thursday, adding veteran depth to a bullpen in need of it. Kimbrel, 37, has not pitched in a major-league game since June 6. He spent time in both the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers organization's this season. The Rangers granted him his release on Thursday afternoon after Kimbrel posted a 3.86 ERA across 21 innings for Triple-A Round Rock. Advertisement Kimbrel's 440 career saves trail only Los Angeles Angels closer Kenley Jansen for the most by any active reliever. Sixth on the list is Houston closer Josh Hader, who is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a capsule strain in his left shoulder. Adding Kimbrel should relieve some pressure from a bullpen short on experience in Hader's absence. Fill-in closer Bryan Abreu is among the sport's best relievers, but nothing behind him is as settled. Bennett Sousa, Bryan King and Kaleb Ort are among the club's collection of setup men. None of them entered the season with more than a year of major-league service time. Kimbrel has pitched in parts of 16 major-league seasons and made 30 postseason appearances. He closed for the 2018 World Series champion Boston Red Sox, and, in 2023, threw for a Philadelphia Phillies team that reached the NLCS. A former Rookie of the Year winner who last made an All-Star team in 2023, Kimbrel had a brutal season for the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, authoring a 5.33 ERA and 1.357 WHIP in 57 appearances. Baltimore designated Kimbrel for assignment that September after signing him to a one-year, $12 million contract over the winter. Kimbrel will, ironically, join the Astros for a series against the Orioles at Camden Yards this weekend. Spot the pattern. Jerry Jones: Parsons offer would make him highest-paid non-QB in guaranteed money

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that he's confident Micah Parsons will be on the field Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Judging by Jerry Jones' comments Thursday, there's a good chance that's without a new contract. While joining former Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Irvin on his YouTube channel, the Cowboys owner and general manager sounded completely committed to not renegotiating what he believes was already negotiated back in March with Parsons. Jones said the offer would have made the All-Pro pass rusher the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in guaranteed money. Advertisement 'The world would know that I want Micah if they knew what I had offered him,' Jones told Irvin. 'And he knows what I offered him.' Jones and Parsons met back in March and negotiated without Parsons' agent, David Mulugheta, being present. Jones said Thursday that when they sent the contract details over, 'the agent told us to stick it up our ass.' Parsons, who requested a trade Aug. 1, is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. His 2025 salary is just over $24 million. The NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback in terms of average annual value is Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt at $41 million per year. Last month, he signed a three-year, $123 million contract extension with $108 million guaranteed, the most guaranteed money by a non-quarterback. When Parsons posted his trade request on X, his statement said, 'I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present.' Parsons included details about the March meeting, writing that it was about leadership. 'Somehow the conversation turned into him talking contract with me,' Parsons added. 'Yes I engaged in a back and forth in regards to what I wanted from my contract, but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation and I informed Mr. Jones afterward my agent would reach out thinking this would get things done.' Jones continued to explain Thursday that Parsons is under contract for this season and the Cowboys have the ability to franchise tag him the next two seasons. The franchise tag number for a defensive end this season is $22 million. According to the projected franchise tag number for a defensive end next season will be a little over $26.5 million. 'We really got three years to work this thing out,' Jones said, before explaining how he did the same thing with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who is the NFL's highest-paid player at $60 million per season. 'We couldn't agree so Dak played the last year of his contract and then we franchised him. It's exactly what happened with Dak, so we moved forward and ultimately we got a contact, made Dak the highest-paid player in the NFL. So the precedent is handling it like Dak. Advertisement 'But in this particular case, then Micah comes in and plays this year under his contract. If he doesn't, then it's very costly, very costly for everybody.' Parsons has been attending training camp practices, taking part in the walk-through portions and meetings. But he has not been practicing. It remains to be seen if that will change next week as the Cowboys begin preparation for their season opener at Philadelphia on Sept. 4. Micah Parsons is here — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 20, 2025 It's unrealistic to expect a deal to get done without Jones and Mulugheta talking. That hasn't happened to this point. And judging by Jones' comments' Thursday, it doesn't sound like he will be the one making the first call. 'Micah and I talked (in March) and then we were going to send it over to the agent,' Jones said. 'We had our agreements on terms, amount, guarantees, everything. We were going to send it over to the agent, and the agent said don't bother because we have all that to negotiate. Well, I had already negotiated. I already moved off my mark in several areas. So the issue, very frankly, is we've had the negotiation in my mind. And the agent is trying to get his nose in it right now and try to come in there and improve off the mark that we had already set. 'We've got this deal resolved in my mind, for the Dallas Cowboys. We've got it done. And if the agent wants to finish up the details, which he should, and do all the paperwork, he can do that. And we're ready to go. But as far as the amount of money, the years, the guarantees, all of that, we've negotiated that.' NBA Legend Shaquille O'Neal Had Words for Dwight Howard

Earlier in 2025, the NBA had confirmed that Dwight Howard would be among the players inducted into the Hall of Fame. The former NBA star made eight All-Star teams, eight All-NBA teams, five All-Defense teams, won three Defensive Player of the Year awards, and won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. After Howard found out about his induction, he took to his personal X account to reveal who he wanted to present him at the Hall of Fame, writing, "I want KG , Shaq, and Kareem to walk me out," with a prayer emoji and a #hof. Howard clearly indicated that he and O'Neal had squashed their years-long beef with one another through this message. However, on August 7, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced who would be presenting for each player who got inducted. In Howard's case, that would be Patrick Ewing, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman, and Dominique Wilkins. O'Neal's name was not on the list. Shaquile O'Neal Reveals How He And Dwight Howard Worked Things Out Over the weekend, FOX Sports' Rachel Nichols talked to O'Neal about Howard, where the former confirmed that he would be on stage to present for the latter at the Hall of Fame. He also explained to Nichols how he and Howard squashed their beef with each other. "We finally had a heart-to-heart," O'neal told Nichols. "The same thing I did with him, the same thing I did with Kobe (Bryant), (Dwyane) Wade, Penny Hardaway. That's how I motivate young players to become great. I treat 'em like I don't like 'em and I try to get 'em upset because I know guys like Dwight and Penny and Kobe especially and D-Wade. When you upset 'em, they play at a higher level. "But we hashed it out. He thought I generally disliked him. I told him, 'No, that's not the case.' As a leader, sometimes you have to find different ways of motivating youngsters." The difference between Howard and the other former NBA stars O'Neal mentioned is that he was never teammates with him, though they did play for a few of the same teams, most notably the Lakers and the Orlando Magic. During Howard's playing days, he and O'Neal had some choice words for each other, particularly because Howard called himself Superman as a nickname when O'Neal did the same thing when he played. This has led to an argument on X even after Howard's NBA days were over. Still, it appears Howard and O'Neal have put that behind them, as Howard has voiced his desire to have O'Neal there, and O'Neal has confirmed that the feeling is mutual.
