IND vs ENG Test: Substitution in cricket? Michael Vaughan has an idea after Rishabh Pant's injury

Rishabh Pant's painful exit from the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Wednesday reignited a larger debate in world cricket — should like-for-like substitutes be allowed for injuries?
Pant, batting on 37, was struck flush on his right foot
while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes.
The ball crashed into his toe, causing visible swelling and bleeding. While England went up in appeal for leg-before, replays showed a faint inside edge, sparing Pant the dismissal.
But there was no escaping the physical damage. After receiving on-field treatment and struggling to stand, India's wicketkeeper-batter was ferried off in a mini ambulance, visibly in pain and limping, and was
later taken for scans
.

It has now emerged that
Pant will out for a lengthy period
and is unlikely to return for the fourth or fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
As India cope with the loss of their X-factor batter, former England captain
Michael Vaughan
questioned the fairness of continuing a high-stakes Test series with one team effectively reduced to ten players.
In a social media post he said, "Clear and obvious injuries in the first innings of Tests we should allow like for like Subs .. we have concussion subs so surely we can have subs for injuries like Rishabhs..."
Earlier on
BBC's Test Match Special
he
had said
, 'I don't like the fact that we've got four days left in the game — four days of action in what has been an incredible series — where we are going to have ten versus eleven.'

Calling for a rule change, Vaughan said the game should evolve to accommodate injury substitutions during the first innings.
'Once they brought in concussion subs, I was crying out, saying, 'Well, just have substitutions then in the first innings of a game.' That would be my stepping point,' Vaughan said.
'If someone breaks a hand or a foot, it's so evident that they are in real pain and can't carry on. I think it's very clear — you should be allowed a sub.'
Vaughan's argument is based on fairness and player safety — if teams can field substitutes for concussions, why not for clearly visible injuries suffered during live play?
However, not everyone agrees.
Former England captain Alastair Cook was more cautious, pointing to the grey areas that could complicate such a rule. He cited scenarios where players could feign or exaggerate injuries to gain tactical advantage.
'Say we've just seen Pant walk off — he looks in all kinds of pain. And then it turns out it's not broken. There's nothing on the X-ray — it's just a bruise. Does he have to play on then?' Cook asked.
'If he's broken his foot, that's a different thing. But there will be cases where someone gets hit on the arm, says 'I can't move my hand,' and then it's just a bruise. So do you get replaced because of discomfort?'
Pant's injury, incidentally, is the second one he has suffered this series.
He had previously bruised a finger during the third Test at Lord's, which prevented him from donning the gloves.
While the debate continues, one thing is clear: Pant's absence could hurt India — both strategically and emotionally. As Sai Sudharsan noted in the post-match briefing, 'He was in a lot of pain. His presence makes a difference — on and off the field.'
The call for like-for-like substitutions in Test cricket — at least for 'clear and obvious' injuries — is bound to intensify after this incident. Whether the ICC chooses to act or not, Vaughan's proposal has put a new spotlight on a long-standing gap in the game's evolving rulebook.

KL Rahul's 532-Run Blitz Falls Just Short Of Sunil Gavaskar's Historic England Benchmark

KL Rahul had a phenomenal outing in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 in England, scoring 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries across the series. His stellar performances helped him become only the second Indian opener to score 500+ runs in a Test series in England, a rare feat that places him among the country's best. However, Rahul missed the opportunity to surpass a legendary milestone. Coming into the final Test at The Oval, the right-hander needed just 17 runs to break Sunil Gavaskar's record of 542 runs, set during the 1979 England tour. Unfortunately, he managed only 7 runs in his last innings, ending the series with 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.32, falling agonizingly short of Gavaskar's mark by 10 runs. This near miss does not overshadow Rahul's consistency and impact throughout the series. His fluent stroke play and ability to handle the swinging Duke's ball earned him accolades, and he now joins an elite list of Indian openers who have thrived in English conditions. Most runs by an Indian opener in a Test series in England: 542: Sunil Gavaskar (1979) 532: KL Rahul (2025) 402: Murali Vijay (2014) 368: Rohit Sharma (2021-22) Rahul's heroics in the 2025 series will be remembered as one of the finest displays by an Indian opener in challenging English conditions, even though the cherished record slipped from his grasp by a slender margin. Who has the upper hand? Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten 51 took India to 75/2 at stumps on the second day of the fifth Test against England at the Oval. India lead England by 52 runs at stumps on Day 2 with Jaiswal and night watchman Akash Deep (4 not out) at the crease. After taking a lead of 23 runs, England pacer Josh Tongue removed KL Rahul (7) while Gus Atkinson accounted for Sai Sudharsan (11). Earlier, England were bowled out for 247 in their first innings with Mohammed Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh Krishna (4/62) taking four wickets each.

London Weather Report, India vs England 5th Test Day 3: Will rain interrupt IND vs ENG Oval Test today?

India vs England (IND vs ENG) 5th Test Day 3 London Weather Forecast Report: After an exhilarating day of cricket between England and India during the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Oval in London on Friday, the visitors will hope to gain a decisive advantage over the hosts in hope to level the series 2-2. The Shubman Gill-led India move into a crucial Day 3 of the Test with a 52-run lead, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal batting on 51 after being given two reprieves in the field by English fielders on Friday. Earlier, trailing by 23 runs after the end of the first innings, India had lost the wickets of KL Rahul (7) and Sai Sudharsan (11) early, but fast-bowler Akash Deep came in as the nightwatchman and ensured that India did not suffer any additional losses as India closed the day on 75/2. London Weather on Saturday (UK Met Office) England managed 247 after their openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got them off to a flier. But an inspirational spell from Mohammed Siraj led the way back for India as the pace duo of him and Prasidh Krishna accounted for eight wickets, allowing India to catapult themselves back into the contest. Earlier on Thursday, only 64 overs were bowled, despite extended play, after rain caused an initial delay. Overcast skies persisted throughout the day in London, and after losing their fifth consecutive toss, India struggled against England's pace attack in challenging conditions. The batters fought hard but lost six top-order wickets, barely managing to cross 200 by stumps. The weather on Saturday (Day 3 of the Test) is expected to be clear all day. As per the UK Met Office, the chances of rain are less than 5 % throughout the day. Temperatures will remain steady at 19-21°C between 11 AM and 7 PM local time (3:30 PM to 11:30 PM IST).

‘The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding': Michael Vaughan on India's comeback vs England on Day 2 of Oval Test

With England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett taking England to a score of 92 without loss at one stage in reply to India's first-innings total of 224 in the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, the Ollie Pope-led England team looked set to post a huge first-innings total. However, with the Shubman Gill-led Indian team restricting England to a first-innings total of 247, India remained in the hunt, finishing the second day with a second-innings score of 75 for 2 and a lead of 52 runs. Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Indian captain Shubman Gill for his gameplay post-lunch on the second day, where Indian bowlers, led by Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, ensured that England could not cross 250. 'The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding in the afternoon because he brought the field in and he said to the England players, 'If you're going to play good shots, you're going to be rewarded, but if you don't, then there's a chance we'll take one or two wickets.' There were a couple of really good deliveries from Siraj to get rid of Ollie Pope, who was playing nicely, and Joe Root, who was playing the Joe Root way. Those were two big moments in the afternoon session,' Vaughan said while commenting on BBC Sport. Earlier on the second day of the Oval Test, England all-rounder Chris Woakes was sidelined from the Test with a shoulder injury. Woakes had suffered the injury during the 57th over of India's first innings on Thursday as he stretched to make a dive near the boundary to save a run, resulting in the injury to his shoulder. With England a bowler short in the match and with London weather expected to be sunny on Saturday, Vaughan shared how he sees India taking advantage of England being one bowler short. 'I'd rather be India, with the fact that England don't have Chris Woakes and tomorrow the sun's going to shine. You would think this pitch would quieten down, but if it stays like this, it's going to be a great game. It's had movement throughout, and the standout partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like it exploded England ahead—and then India remembered to bowl at the stumps, they bowled a bit fuller,' Vaughan added. Vaughan's fellow commentator and former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta also termed India as being 'a little ahead' in the game. 'India are a little ahead in this game; it's been a low-scoring game. India are ahead, for sure, but I think at the end of the day, it's going to be about pressure. So far in this series, this India side have handled pressure well, and it's been a long tour, one more innings to go. You have to keep everything else away and just bat normally. The pitch will get better; it's just about how you handle it. At Lord's, it wasn't handled well; at Old Trafford, it was handled very well by India,' Dasgupta said on BBC.
