‘The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding': Michael Vaughan on India's comeback vs England on Day 2 of Oval Test
'The captaincy of Shubman Gill was outstanding in the afternoon because he brought the field in and he said to the England players, 'If you're going to play good shots, you're going to be rewarded, but if you don't, then there's a chance we'll take one or two wickets.' There were a couple of really good deliveries from Siraj to get rid of Ollie Pope, who was playing nicely, and Joe Root, who was playing the Joe Root way. Those were two big moments in the afternoon session,' Vaughan said while commenting on BBC Sport.
Earlier on the second day of the Oval Test, England all-rounder Chris Woakes was sidelined from the Test with a shoulder injury. Woakes had suffered the injury during the 57th over of India's first innings on Thursday as he stretched to make a dive near the boundary to save a run, resulting in the injury to his shoulder. With England a bowler short in the match and with London weather expected to be sunny on Saturday, Vaughan shared how he sees India taking advantage of England being one bowler short.
'I'd rather be India, with the fact that England don't have Chris Woakes and tomorrow the sun's going to shine. You would think this pitch would quieten down, but if it stays like this, it's going to be a great game. It's had movement throughout, and the standout partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley looked like it exploded England ahead—and then India remembered to bowl at the stumps, they bowled a bit fuller,' Vaughan added.
Vaughan's fellow commentator and former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta also termed India as being 'a little ahead' in the game.
'India are a little ahead in this game; it's been a low-scoring game. India are ahead, for sure, but I think at the end of the day, it's going to be about pressure. So far in this series, this India side have handled pressure well, and it's been a long tour, one more innings to go. You have to keep everything else away and just bat normally. The pitch will get better; it's just about how you handle it. At Lord's, it wasn't handled well; at Old Trafford, it was handled very well by India,' Dasgupta said on BBC.

Shubman Gill's performance in his first Test series as India captain is one that would go down in cricketing lore. He became just the third Indian after Sunil Gavaskar and Yashasvi Jaiswal to score more than 700 runs in a single series and even got within 20 runs of the former's long-standing record for most runs scored by any Indian in a Test series. Gavaskar, who is part of the commentary panel for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, has said that while he may still hold the record, he holds Gill's performance in this series above his own in 1971 against the mighty West Indies. Gavaskar's record performance came despite the fact that he played in only four of the five Tests in that series. Even more astonishing is the reason behind why he didn't play one match – he only made his international debut in the second Test. Gavaskar's record performance is hence the returns that a debutant managed against the likes of Garry Sobers-led West Indies. The 76-year-old has now said that since he was only a debutant, there was a lot less pressure on him to deliver as compared to Gill, who has started his Test captaincy with this gruelling tour of England. 'The difference is that 754 came with the additional responsibility of being captain. I was the baby of the team. You know, it wouldn't have mattered if I had failed,' said Gavaskar on Sony Sports Network. 'Nobody would have given a hoot if I had failed. But to be the captain and score 750-plus runs—750-plus runs where he's making a difference to his side's fortunes. Don't go by those 20 runs, but just see what that 754 has done for Indian cricket.' Gavaskar presented Gill with a signed shirt and a cap after Stumps on Day 3. 'Well, yes, in anticipation of him going past my record, I had gotten something for him. This is all in God's hands. But 754 runs, it's fantastic. The difference is that 754 runs have come with him having the additional responsibility of being the captain,' said Gavaskar. The video of Gavaskar's presentation was posted on X by Sony Sports Network. 'Well done! I've got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (the record of most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series)… but at least you have something to aim for in the next series, yeah?' he could be heard telling Gill in the video. This is a little cap, which I give to very few people, with my signature. All the best, God bless—and that last move was fantastic, setting a fielder there and bowling a yorker.' Gill's tally is also the second highest for a captain in any Test series, only 56 runs behind the record of 810 held by the legendary Don Bradman, who had scored that against England at home in the 1936/37 Ashes. Conversely, it is the highest score by any Indian captain in a Test series by a margin of of 22 runs – Gavaskar held the record previous for the 732 he scored in the six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79. The only Tests in which Gill failed to score centuries in this series were both in London – the third Test at Lord's and the fifth Test at the Oval. Gill started the series by scoring a century on his captaincy debut. He scored 147 in his very first innings as the skipper, followed by a score of eight in the second innings. Gill then made merry in the second Test, scoring a record 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second as he powered India to a 336-run win at Edgbaston. He then could only manage scores of 16 and six in the third Test and 12 in the first innings of the fourth before grinding out 103 runs off 238 balls as part of a match-saving effort with KL Rahul. Rahul and Gill batted out nearly 70 overs after which unbeaten centuries by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helped India draw the match. This was followed by the 21 and 11 he scored at the Oval.

Vaishnavi Patil secured her spot in the World Championships with impressive speed and mat awareness. She aims for an Olympic medal. Vaishnavi Patil impressed with her speed and remarkable mat awareness at the selection trials for the forthcoming World Championships. She outsmarted her competitors one by one to secure her spot in the national team in the women's 65kg category for next month's Worlds in Zagreb. Given her tactical intelligence and strong defence, it's hard to believe that Vaishnavi has only been involved in mat wrestling for four years and has little experience in major tournaments. Typically, Indian wrestlers transition from the junior to senior level, gaining experience through domestic events, then moving to the Asian level, and gradually participating in senior international tournaments, Asian championships, before finally competing at the Worlds. Who Is Vaishnavi Patil? Vaishnavi, the daughter of a dhaba owner in Kalyan, Mumbai, has risen to the top level in the country quickly, despite starting relatively late. 'I started mat wrestling around the end of 2020. Before that I was doing only mud wrestling. When I saw Sakshi Malik win that medal in 2016 Rio, I decided what I needed to do, I just wanted to pursue this sport," Vaishnavi was quoted as saying to PTI after defeating Muskan 7-2 in the final. 'My father runs a dhaba and my mother is a housewife. My parents are managing everything for me. There weren't many good academies in Maharashtra, so I shifted to Hisar," said the 22-year-old, who trains under coach Jasbeer at the Sushil Kumar Akahada. Vaishnavi idolises American wrestler Helen Maroulis, the 2016 Olympic champion, bronze medallist at the Tokyo (2021) and Paris Games (2024), and seven-time Worlds medallist. 'She is an amazing wrestler. I watch her bouts on YouTube. I want to do well for myself and for the country. I am confident of winning a medal at the Worlds and eventually I want to win an Olympic medal." Coach Jasbeer believes that discouraging Vaishnavi from frequently visiting her home in Maharashtra has significantly contributed to her progress. 'She used to stay here for two-three months in Hisar and go back to her native place for two months. I told her parents that she needs to be at the training centre for one year. They agreed and she is a very dedicated wrestler, and the result is there," Jasbeer told PTI. 'She is very disciplined, she works very hard. We have good wrestlers at our centre and practicing with them has also helped her. She is technically sound and her counter-attacks are pretty good." Interestingly, Vaishnavi started as a swimmer and even won two state-level medals. Attending a felicitation ceremony for wrestlers and seeing the respect they received drew her to the combat sport. 'When she was in class IX, she said she wanted to become a fighter pilot and serve the country. We searched for training centres, but realising that her eyesight number was 9.7, we knew she wouldn't make it. 'We put her in swimming and one day she said she wants to change the sport. The centres were far away in Kolaba, Sangli, Satara and we did not want to send her too far. But seeing her passion, we introduced her to Jasbeer sir and sent her to Hisar," Vaishnavi's father Dilip Patil told PTI. 'Initially, her mother stayed with her, taking care of her needs. I run a dhaba near the bus stop in our village and all our earning go into her training. My bank balance is zero. I manage my house with some income from farming but all the dhaba earning is transferred to Vaishnavi. 'She showed promise quite early During her first competition, without much training she won a silver in the junior state competition and then won back-to-back gold. We speak to her only once, on Sunday as she is not allowed to keep a mobile phone by the coaches at the akhada," said Patil. Moving to Haryana, Vaishnavi had to adapt to a different culture compared to Maharashtra. 'Most people do not eat non-vegetarian food in Haryana. They rely more on milk, curd, all these things. Ghee, almonds, and all dairy products have been added to my diet, though I continue to take non-veg food.
