FWICE calls for complete ban on Pakistani artists after Pahalgam attack: ‘Hindustan ka sadasya agar unke saath kaam…'

Hindustan Times26-04-2025

The General Secretary of Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), Ashoke Dubey, has called for a complete ban on Pakistani artists from working in India. This comes after a deadly terrorist attack that took place in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, where 26 civilians were killed. Tensions between India and Pakistan have risen sharply since the attack. Ashoke, while speaking to ANI, said, "Since this is a matter of national interest, the nation comes first. The continuous attacks, including the recent one in Pahalgam on our tourists, are shameful. We have again issued a press release stating that if any of our members are found working with Pakistani artists or technicians, we will take action against them and stop working with them."
Ashoke further mentioned that letters are being sent to all associations linked with FWICE. He went on to say that they have also written to the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister to issue a notification stating that if any Indian member works with Pakistani artists, a case of treason should be filed against them.
"We are writing letters to all the associations affiliated with us. If anyone is found engaging in such activities again, they will not be allowed to work in the industry," Ashoke said.
"In the letter to the I&B Minister, we also said that a notification should be issued. Humara koi bhi sadasya, Hindustan ka koi bhi sadasya agar unke saath kaam kar raha hai, toh uske upar desh droh ka mukadma kiya jaye taaki wo aage se ye sab cheez karne se pehle 1000 baar sochne par (If any member from India works with Pakistani artists, a case of treason should be filed against them so that they think a thousand times before doing it)," he added.
Earlier on Thursday, sources from the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting indicated that the film Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, would not be permitted for screening in India.
Ashoke told ANI that they had already written a letter to producer Vivek Agarwal, asking him not to release the film, warning that FWICE would "stop cooperating with every unit member" associated with it if he went ahead.
"The film Abir Gulaal was set to release on the 9th. Vivek Agarwal, the producer, was sent a letter from us. We also wrote to the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. We wrote a letter to Vivek stating that you cannot work with Pakistani artists in this manner. If you release this film, we will also cease cooperation with every unit member associated with it, whether it be the cameraman or the director. We asked the I&B ministry to ban this film," Ashoke said.
Fawad Khan, a Pakistani national, was previously banned from working in India following the 2016 Uri attack. His last Bollywood appearance was in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Abir Gulaal, which was slated for release on May 9, 2025, was supposed to be Fawad Khan's comeback project after a hiatus of nearly nine years.

Swara Bhasker Faces Backlash For Supporting Gaza Rally In Mumbai, Netizens Ask 'What About Pahalgam?'

Swara Bhasker shared a poster urging Mumbaikars to join a pro-Palestine rally at Azad Maidan. Her post triggered backlash, with netizens asking, 'What about Pahalgam?' Bollywood actress and activist Swara Bhasker has once again sparked an intense debate online after she posted a call to action in support of a solidarity rally for Gaza and Palestine. The rally, scheduled to be held at Mumbai's Azad Maidan on Wednesday, June 18, has been organized by a coalition of left-leaning political outfits and civil society groups. Swara shared the rally poster on her official X (formerly Twitter) account with the caption, 'Mumbai.. Show up for Palestine on 18 June! 🇵🇸❤️✨#stopthegenocideinpalestine." The poster calls for a collective condemnation of what it describes as the 'Israeli genocide of Gaza" and urges the Indian government to revise its official stance on the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Mumbai.. Show up for Palestine on 18 June! 🇵🇸❤️✨ #stopthegenocideinpalestine — Swara Bhasker (@ReallySwara) June 16, 2025 The event is being organized by parties and organizations including CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation, Samajwadi Party, AIFB, RPI (Secular), among others. The actress' post quickly went viral and drew a mixed bag of reactions. While many lauded her courage for speaking up on a sensitive and polarising issue, others criticized the post as selective outrage. A number of social media users questioned her silence on other global and domestic humanitarian crises, particularly referencing the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. One user wrote, 'Why do you always protest for only one side? What about the victims in Pahalgam or the persecuted minorities in other parts of the world?" Another added, 'If you really care, go to Palestine instead of doing PR events in Mumbai." Some users even went so far as to tag Mumbai Police and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, urging authorities to look into the legality of such protests and Swara's involvement. This isn't the first time Swara Bhasker has courted controversy for voicing her opinions on international matters. In the past, she has spoken up on issues ranging from the Rohingya refugee crisis to the CAA protests, often drawing both praise for her activism and criticism for what detractors view as biased political leanings. As of now, Swara has not issued any further statements in response to the online backlash. First Published:

Bollywood actor Aruna Irani was popular in the 1970s and was often seen in supporting roles. (Also Read: Aruna Irani returns to Mumbai in wheelchair, sings through pain after suffering injury in Bangkok. Anybody would pray for that kind of a role. Fir kaafi logon ki wajah se kaat dena pada. Rekha ji humari, voh dene hi nahi deti thi, ki nahi Aruna ka role bhut accha hai. (Because of the producers, the film took six years to be made. I had a very good role — it was the central character. Anybody would pray for a role like that. But due to several people, it had to be cut down. Rekha ji, for instance, she just wouldn't allow it. She said, 'No, Aruna's role is too good').' She then recalled how Rekha got her removed from another film because of her acting skills and said, "Rekha removed me from a film even though she was a good friend of mine. She still is. But when she took me out of a film called Mangalsutra, I asked the producer, 'Why did you remove me even after giving me the signing amount?' He said, 'Rekha ji never wanted you in the film.' When I asked Rekha why she did it, she said, 'Aruna, if you pulled off the role too well emotionally, I'll start looking like a vamp in the film.' So she cut me off." Apart from Rekha, the film Mangalsutra also featured Anant Nag and Prema Narayan in lead roles. The movie tackled themes of marital values, sacrifice, and societal expectations around the sacred bond of marriage. Aruna Irani is a celebrated Indian actor known for her work across Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, and Kannada cinema. With a career spanning over five decades, she has acted in more than 500 films, portraying a wide range of roles—from supporting characters to deeply emotional parts. In addition to acting, she later ventured into television, becoming a successful producer and director.
