Tour de France Stage 3 results, standings: Tim Merlier wins race featuring serious crash
Tim Merlier edged out Italian Jonathan Milan to win Monday's stage, which ended with a dramatic sprint that was extended from 3 km to 5km with a large peloton throughout the mostly flat terrain over the more than 178 km between Valenciennes and Dunkirk.
Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen, who began Monday wearing the green jersey and ranked seventh in the overall chase for the yellow jersey, suffered a serious crash that forced him to withdraw from the Tour de France two days after winning its opening stage. He fell hard from his bike after contact with Bryan Coquard during the intermediate sprint portion of the stage won by Milan, who replaced Philipsen as the green jersey leader with 81 points. Philipsen had his jersey ripped in several places, suffered bloody scrapes and was attended to by the race doctor shortly afterward, according to Reuters.
Mathieu Van der Poel of the Netherlands, who won the sprint to end stage 2 on Sunday, kept the yellow jersey. Tim Wellons of Germany claimed the polka dot jersey and the only available climbing point during stage 3 when he finished first over to the summit of Mont Cassel.

NFL reveals reasons why smelling salts are banned in 2025
The 2025 season will introduce some new rules and technology to the NFL, but one change in particular has upset one of the league's best tight ends. The San Francisco 49ers' George Kittle interrupted an interview on NFL Network to voice his displeasure over a new rule banning smelling salts. "I honestly just came up here to air a grievance," Kittle said during an episode of "Inside Training Camp Live" featuring teammate Fred Warner. "Our team got a memo today that smelling salts and ammonia packets were made illegal in the NFL. And I've been distraught all day." Kittle was especially upset because he uses smelling salts often during NFL games. "I'm an every drive guy," Kittle said. "I considered retirement. We got to figure out a middle ground here guys. Somebody help me out, somebody come up with a good idea... I miss those already." USA TODAY Sports obtained the league memo and here's what the NFL told teams. NFL statement on smelling salts A league official confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that the teams are now prohibited from providing players smelling salts during games. The official declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter. The memo that the NFL sent to teams today read: "In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy. The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL. In light of this information, effective for the 2025 NFL season, clubs are prohibited from providing or supplying ammonia in any form at NFL games. For clarity, 'ammonia' refers to ammonia capsules, inhalers, ammonia in a cup, and any form of 'smelling salts.' This prohibition applies to all club personnel (including but not limited to team physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and coaches or other personnel). The prohibition applies through the entirety of all NFL games, including during all pregame activities, and halftime, and applies on the sideline and in stadium locker rooms." NFL players have used smelling salts for years, and it isn't the first sport to ban them. Many boxing organizations banned them years ago because they can mask a severe injury.

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel makes big move to rival team
Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave the team where he became one of the best riders of his generation to join Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe from next season. The 25-year-old Belgian rider informed Soudal Quick-Step that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2026. The team said on Tuesday it has agreed to release him early. 'After taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team's ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season,' Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. Evenepoel signed with Soudal Quick-Step at a young age after the squad's former manager Patrick Lefevere spotted his immense potential. Under Lefevere's supervision, Evenepoel won prestigious races, including the 2022 Spanish Vuelta, two stages of the Tour de France and two titles at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He finished third at the 2024 Tour de France but withdrew from this year's edition. Widely considered the best time trialist in the world, Evenepoel remains focused on winning more Grand Tours.
