When Madhuri Dixit Called Sanjay Dutt Her "Favourite Partner" And He Said "I Love You" To Her Ignoring Others Around
After a series of surgeries, Richa went into remission. But during this fragile period, Sanjay and Richa's marriage was also unravelling. Enter Madhuri Dixit.
Sanjay's '90s resurgence began with Thanedaar (1990), where Madhuri starred as his leading lady. The film is best remembered for the chartbuster Tamma Tamma, featuring Dutt, a non-dancer, trying to keep pace with the dancing diva.
Apart from Thanedaar, Sanjay had previously worked with Madhuri Dixit in Khatron Ke Khiladi and Kanoon Apna Apna. Both had signed more films together, such as Sahibaan and Mahaanta, and were spending a fair bit of time together. Soon rumours of a romance between them started doing the rounds in Mumbai. When Saajan became a blockbuster, their chemistry was widely credited for its success.
This was when Sanjay's love life is said to have taken a very interesting, scandalous turn. Madhuri was signed as his leading lady in Khalnayak. While the stories about his association with Madhuri may not have been good for his already floundering marriage, their on-screen partnership would give Sanjay the best phase of his career.
In 2023, during a special screening celebrating 30 years of Khalnayak, Subhash Ghai turned towards Sanjay Dutt and playfully teased him, "Yeh bolta tha, yeh picture bohot door tak jaayegi par dekhta tha Madhuri ki taraf". Taken aback, Sanjay laughed quietly, choosing silence over a reply.
More than Saajan's success or Sanjay's rising stardom, it was the Sanjay-Madhuri story that dominated film magazine pages. Despite their denials, tabloids brimmed with innuendo and speculation. The media even hinted that Sanjay planned to divorce Richa.
By 1992, while shooting Khalnayak, the film press openly labelled them a couple. Their fondness was clear, and Madhuri, at least, made no effort to hide it. She once told an interviewer, "My favourite partner is Sanjay Dutt, he's a real joker... And his stories make me laugh all the time, but he is also a gentleman".
To another interviewer, she said, "Sanju is a fantastic person. He has a loving heart and, in contrast to the widely held view, a good sense of humour. He is the only guy who makes me laugh all the time. He does not play games. He is open and uncomplicated."
But Madhuri didn't say much more than this to the press. Insiders believed their relationship was serious, with whispers of a wedding. Filmfare did a cover story titled "Madhuri to Marry?", which hinted that Madhuri was planning to get married in 1994 - it didn't say to whom - and that she would leave the film business after her wedding.
In the same story, it was reported that Sanjay and Madhuri had grown close during the Mysore (now Mysuru) schedule of Sahibaan (1993) and that "Sanjay played Prince Charming to the hilt". Midway through the schedule the location was shifted to the picturesque hills in Manali. According to Sahibaan's director Ramesh Talwar, "He [Sanjay] was always following Madhuri around and whispering 'I love you', totally ignoring the fact that there were others around."
Though Richa seemed to want to work things out, Sanjay filed for divorce in early 1993.
Sanjay and Madhuri's last film together in the 1990s was Mahaanta (1997). The two shared the screen 22 years later in 2019's Kalank.

'Bakaiti' review: A cash-strapped family gets on each other's nerves – and yours too at times
The title makes it clear. No surprises here. Don't complain that you haven't been warned. Do remember to turn down the volume. The ZEE5 series Bakaiti – nonsensical talk in Hindi – is about the Katarias from Ghaziabad. That old saying about a family that fights together but stays together? It sounds rubbishy – bakaiti, actually – but applies to the Katarias, who start and end their days by sniping at each other at high volume. The lawyer Sanjay (Rajesh Tailang) lives in his ancestral house with his wife Sushma (Sheeba Chadha), daughter Naina (Tanya Sharma) and son Bharat (Aditya Shukla). There's also Sanjay's father-in-law (Ramesh Rai), who is addicted to his phone. The family is struggling financially, forcing Sanjay to rent out a room. His children react hysterically, but are forced to accept the inevitable. It helps that the tenant, Chirag (Keshav Sadhna), is personable, especially to Naina. But the problems are never-ending. Like the water meter in the house that nobody remembers to turn off on time, the Katarias have forgotten what it means to be a family. They turn on each other so vigorously that you expect a murder or two. The siblings are especially adept at slanging matches so loud, mean-spirited and hurtful that it's a marvel neither them falls to a brain aneurysm. Bakaiti, written by Gunjan Saxena, Neha Pawar and Sheetal Kapoor and with Arnav Chakravarty as showrunner, wants you to get behind the Katarias despite their nerve-shredding behaviour. The creators and director Ameet Guptha firmly believe that even as the characters explode and implode in flamboyant fashion, they have enough love among themselves to rally when the muck unerringly hits the fan. Sanjay's woes are tied up with his terrible equation with his brother Ajay (Parvinder Jit Singh). When they share the same room, another battlefront opens up. It's all quite exhausting – the eardrum-shattering squabbles, the overwrought emotions, the unavoidable suspicion that this lot is better off without each other. The Katarias' claim to redemption is questionable. What the seven-episode Bakaiti does well is to reveal how a low bank balance can emotionally bankrupt a family. Very few shows or films are exploring the harsh effects of low income on the average Indian family. Beneath Bakaiti 's fussy comedy simmers the immense distress that is brought on by forced sacrifices and compromises, academic dreams shot to bits, regular reminders of impending doom. Sheeba Chadha and Rajesh Tailang are typically solid – Chadha is especially fantastic in a scene where she goes after her children. Tanya Sharma and Aditya Shukla turn out to be the surprise package. Although Shukla's Bharat initially appears thuggish and obnoxious, and Sharma's Naina flies off the handle too often, their equation is believable, touching and the source of occasional hope. Play

Bakaiti Review: Netflix's Delhi Crime fame Rajesh Tailang & Sheeba Chaddha series shows the woes of a middle-class family in the most realistic way
Language: Hindi Director: Ameet Guptha Cast: Rajesh Tailang, Sheeba Chaddha, Aditya Shukla and more Not impoverished, but middle-class people have their own set of problems. Unlike those under the poverty line, they are not really poor, but their challenges are huge. They are mostly struggling to make both ends meet. Sadly, they have to maintain a certain status in the society, yet they don't have that kind of disposable income. And that is the story of Kataria Parivaar of Bakaiti web series set in Ghaziabad. They can give basic education to their children, but they can't afford the kind of education that every ambitious child dreams of, going to a reputed college away from home. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Bakaiti is indeed a story of every middle-class family shown in the most nuanced possible way. Revolving around the Kataria family, the Bakaiti series shows the helplessness of the father, Sanjay (Rajesh Tailang) of the family, who is unable to send her studious daughter for post-graduation to Mumbai despite her getting half the scholarship. As an advocate, Sanjay is unable to make enough money, but is not willing to sell off the house that his father and he built. He and his wife, Sushma (Sheeba Chaddha) decide to rent out one of the rooms of the house. Now, the problem is that both the kids, Naina (Tanya Sharma) and their cricket-obsessed younger son Bharat (Aditya Shukla), are not willing to share a room. They are used to their own privacy and their own space. A still from Bakaiti Bakaiti beautifully navigates middle-class struggles. The water motor in the house also plays a very important role in the series. Whenever there is a tense moment in the series, it starts giving the alarm that it is time to switch it off. But not a single member in the family is willing to run up to the terrace to do this chore. The show also talks about another family that is Sanjay's ( Rajesh Tailang) side. Sanjay's brother, who runs the family furniture business, is desperate to sell the ancestral house because he believes that is logical, but Sanjay refuses. Though both families fight among each other, they come together in times of need. Like all middle-class families, there is always financial tension, but they try to navigate through all the hurdles and stay together. Layered with clashing views and generation gap, the family is together through thick and thin. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD No out-of-the-box storyline, but it will touch your heart for its simplicity. The story takes a turn when Naina (Tanya Sharma) goes missing when her father refuses to send her to Mumbai for her post-graduation. We, belonging to the middle class, will understand the feelings of sacrificing dreams because of family situations. And one who has gone through such situations of sacrificing her dreams of moving to a big city for education, being crushed because of financial crunch, will empathise with Naina (Tanya Sharma) all the more. Life can be really cruel if you don't come from money or circles of power. Rating: 3 out of 5 WATCH the trailer of Bakaiti here:
