Gray Skies, Drizzle, and a Cool Stretch for Maryland Before a Midweek Warm-Up
It's a gloomy, gray Tuesday across much of Maryland as a stalled front lingers to the south. The setup has kept a steady easterly breeze in place, feeding in moisture off the Chesapeake and Atlantic, and locking us under a blanket of low clouds. Temperatures are stuck well below normal for mid-August, hovering in the upper 60s to low 70s late this morning, with highs only topping out in the lower to middle 70s this afternoon. That's a good 10–15 degrees cooler than what's typical this time of year, though we won't be breaking any records. Winds could occasionally gust to 15 mph, adding to the damp, raw feel. Tonight, more of the same — drizzle and fog are possible with lows holding in the 60s, maybe around 70 inside the Beltway. Midweek Shift Relief from the gloom comes Wednesday as that front begins to lift northward. Warmer air filters back into Maryland, and highs should rebound into the low to mid 80s. A few showers and thunderstorms may pop up in western parts of the state, but most areas will just notice a return to summer warmth. By Thursday, a cold front will push through, bringing drier air and a noticeable north wind. Gusts may run 15–25 mph at times, making it feel refreshing compared to the recent sticky stretch. Temperatures will land in the mid-70s to low 80s during the day, before cooling into the upper 50s and 60s at night. Hurricane Erin and the Beaches While Hurricane Erin stays well offshore, Maryland's coast will still feel its influence. Ocean City and nearby beaches can expect an increase in surf and rip currents starting late Wednesday and continuing through the weekend. Waves will build higher than normal, creating dangerous swimming conditions and raising concerns for minor beach erosion. Beachgoers should use caution, swim near lifeguards, and stay alert to red flag warnings posted along the shoreline. Looking Ahead Friday looks like a winner — plenty of sun, dry air, and highs in the 80s for most of Maryland. The weekend brings a different story, though, as another front approaches. Expect a mix of clouds and sun with the chance for a few showers or storms Saturday and Sunday. Highs will hold in the low to mid 80s, with cooler 70s in the higher terrain. Overnight lows dip into the 50s and 60s, keeping mornings comfortable. By Monday, that front clears, and Maryland should see another stretch of sunshine and low humidity to start the week.

Tracking a seasonable and dry pattern
Early this morning, skies are dry in St. Joseph, but if you're heading toward the Kansas City metro, thunderstorms are moving through that area. Mostly cloudy skies will give way once the sun rises. It's already muggy, with dew points in the low 70s, and the humidity will linger throughout the day. Partly cloudy skies will stick around, keeping temperatures a little cooler. The heat index will reach the mid-90s, which will feel more manageable than recent days. Tonight, skies will be mostly clear, and lows will drop into the upper 60s. A cooler air mass is slowly shifting into the region, helping to keep temperatures more seasonable for this time of year. Starting tomorrow, highs are expected in the mid-80s, making for more pleasant conditions. A dry pattern with plenty of sunshine is also expected. Solve the daily Crossword
