Cyber thugs impersonate Greenko MD, trick staff into transferring ₹2.7 cr

Hyderabad: In a high-stakes case of corporate impersonation, cyber criminals duped senior executives of Greenko Group into transferring ₹2.7 crore by posing as the company's managing director. The fraud was executed over WhatsApp using the MD's photo and convincing language, leading to two separate fund transfers in June first week before the deception was discovered. Cyberabad cyber crime police have launched an investigation based on a formal complaint from the company. The fraudsters contacted Greenko Group's chief finance officer (CFO), Subrat Das, via WhatsApp using two different mobile numbers. To lend credibility, they used a photograph of MD Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty as the display picture. On June 2, one of the imposters requested an urgent payment of ₹1.95 crore, citing client obligations. Following standard protocol, the CFO relayed the request to chief finance controller Virendra Kasliwal, who instructed senior general manager Sripada Chandra Sekhar to process the transfer. The funds were sent to an account under the name ONITSUKA Developers Pvt Ltd. A similar ploy was executed on June 5, resulting in another transfer of ₹75 lakh to Classic Constructions. The fraud came to light later that day when Chandra Sekhar shared the payment details with the MD's office and it was confirmed that no such request had been made by the real MD. "The actual MD confirmed that the mobile numbers used (956*33** and 752*512**) were not his," a cyber crimes police official said. Based on a complaint from Chandra Sekhar, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating, impersonation, forgery, and conspiracy, along with section 66-D of the IT Act. The Greenko Group has assured full cooperation with the authorities in tracking down the culprits. Fraud at children's hosp foiled In a similar incident, fraudsters impersonated Dr Ramesh Kancharla, chairman of Rainbow Children's Medicare Limited (RCML), attempting to defraud the company of ₹20 lakh. Alerted by the unusual 'tone and tenor' of the messages, RCML's CFO contacted the chairman directly, confirming the scam. No funds were transferred, and a complaint was filed at Banjara Hills police station.
