KUCHING (Aug 6): Artificial intelligence (AI), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and renewable energy are the three key pillars needed to drive a sustainable and inclusive future in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), said Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
Speaking at the official opening of the 8th Technology and Innovation International Conference (TECHON) 2025 at a hotel here today, Sagah said the conference's theme, 'AI, TVET, and Renewable Energy: Driving a Sustainable Future through the Sustainable Development Goals', is timely and relevant in addressing the complex challenges of the modern world.
'We are living in an age of rapid transformation. Technologies are advancing at unprecedented speeds. Climate change is no longer a distant concern, it is a present-day crisis.
'Economic disruptions, digital divides, and shifting job markets are redefining how we live, learn, and work. In this ever-shifting landscape, three pillars emerge as crucial enablers of sustainable development: artificial intelligence (AI), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and renewable energy,' he said.
The two-day international conference is organised by Politeknik Mukah, in collaboration with the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (JPPKK), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universitas Negeri Makassar (Indonesia), and Ecole Nationale de Commerce et de Gestion – Agadir, Ibno Zohr University (Morocco).
In his officiating address, Sagah highlighted the transformative role of AI across sectors, from predictive healthcare and automated logistics to smart agriculture and digital learning.
'Al is not merely about replacing human effort. At its best, it is a tool that empowers decision-making, drives innovation, and solves real-world problems when applied ethically, equitably, and with human values at its core,' he said.
According to him, AI has the potential to accelerate several SDGs, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
However, he stressed that realising this potential depends on one essential ingredient: skills.
'TVET serves as the bridge between ideas or innovation and implementation, between technology and society. It is the system that equips our youth, our workforce, and our communities with the practical skills, technical competencies, and problem-solving mindsets needed to thrive in an evolving world,' he said.
Sagah added that in Malaysia and across the region, TVET is becoming increasingly critical as industries shift toward automation and digitalisation.
'When we align TVET with technological advancement and sustainability goals, we are preparing a generation not only to adapt but to lead,' he said.
On renewable energy, Sagah said it represents the most urgent response to the global climate emergency.
'With rising global temperatures and escalating environmental risks, we are already witnessing the consequences of unsustainable energy use. The world can no longer afford to rely on fossil fuels,' he said.
He noted that Malaysia is making progress in renewable energy through initiatives in solar, wind, hydro, and biomass, but reminded that the transition is not just about technology.
'It is about people. It is about building green economies, creating climate-resilient communities, and securing a just energy future for all,' he said.
Sagah emphasised that AI, TVET, and renewable energy must not be seen as isolated domains, but as interconnected strategies that must be developed in harmony.
'AI provides the intelligence to analyse, predict, and optimise. TVET provides the skills to act, build, and implement. Renewable energy provides the sustainability to protect and preserve.
'And TECHON 2025 brings us all together to share ideas, research, and best practices to move this vision forward,' he said.
Sagah also expressed his appreciation to the organisers and sponsors for making the event possible including Business Events Sarawak, Pejabat Pusat Khidmat N.57 Tellian, Bank Rakyat Mukah Branch, GOTT Sdn Bhd, and Maths Proofread.
'I encourage all participants to actively engage in discussions, share insights, and explore potential collaborations during this conference. Let us seize this opportunity to exchange perspectives and forge partnerships,' he added.
Also present were Deputy Director General (Planning) of the Polytechnic and Community College Education Department, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Dr Shamsuri Abdullah; Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine; Director of Politeknik Mukah, Suhaili Aleh; Professor Ir Dr Mohd Asyadi 'Azam Mohd Abid, Dean of the Faculty of Industrial and Manufacturing Technology and Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka; Dr Andi Asrifan, Lecturer in the Doctoral Program in English Language Education at the Graduate School of Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM), Indonesia; Assist Prof Dr Samira Raki from the National School of Commerce and Management (ENCGA), Ibn Zohr University, Morocco; and Joachim Soon Ghim Seng, General Manager of Capacity and Digitalisation at Business Events Sarawak. 8th Technology and Innovation International Conference lead Roland Sagah

Sagah, accompanied by Mohamad Nazri (left), presents a scroll to a graduate. KUCHING (Aug 10): Polytechnics and Community Colleges (POLYCC) continue to serve as the country's main driver of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), offering more than 80,000 study places at the foundation, certificate, diploma, and degree levels. Director of Politeknik Kuching Sarawak, Mohamad Nazri Ismail, said current active enrolment at POLYCC stands at 97,554, underscoring its capacity to provide educational opportunities nationwide. 'This achievement not only reflects our success in attracting new students but also serves as strong evidence of public trust in TVET's role as a catalyst for social mobility and national development,' he said. 'In Sarawak alone, there are three polytechnics and six community colleges operating under POLYCC,' he said. He said this in his speech at the 2025 Sarawak Zone Polytechnics and Community Colleges Convocation, officiated by Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, at Dewan Jubli Perak, Politeknik Kuching Sarawak today. Mohamad Nazri highlighted that POLYCC's 'TVET for All' aspiration is designed to give all segments of society the opportunity to pursue education according to their interests and potential. The initiative, he said, is supported by the POLYCC Reform Plan 2025–2035, the Malaysia Polytechnic Transformation 2023–2035, and the Community College Empowerment 2024–2035. 'The focus is to produce highly skilled manpower oriented towards high-growth, high-value industries and the latest technologies,' he said. 'POLYCC's effectiveness is evident in its graduate employability rate, which stood at 98.8 per cent in 2024. 'In fact, there also has been a 40 per cent increase in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers choosing POLYCC as their main pathway after school, with applications exceeding available capacity each year,' he added. In this regard, he said Politeknik Kuching Sarawak remains committed to producing graduates who meet market needs through initiatives such as sustainable governance, talent empowerment, industry collaboration, and lifelong learning. The convocation today saw 428 graduates from Politeknik Kuching Sarawak, Kuching Community College, Sarikei Community College, Sarikei Community College Sibu Branch, and Miri Community College receiving their diplomas and certificates. A total of 1,719 graduates from eight institutions under POLYCC Sarawak Zone will be celebrated throughout the ceremony, running from August 9 to 12. Also present at the event were Miri Community College director Harmen Muda; Kuching Community College director Sumbang Mandaw; as well as Sarikei Community College and Sarikei Community College Sibu Branch director, Norasmah Jaafar. community college graduation polytechnics TVET

Sarawak to allocate RM600mil for free education in 2026

SIBU: The Sarawak government will spend almost RM600mil in 2026 to provide free higher education for students born in the state. Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the initiative would only apply to students at four state government-owned universities involving 64 courses. "Although Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg never promised free tertiary education in any election, it will still be provided out of care and in the educational interest of Sarawak youth," he said during his speech at the central zone Sarawak Women's, Children and Community Welfare Development Ministry outreach programme here on Sunday (Aug 10), which was officiated by its minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah. The four universities are Universiti Teknologi Sarawak, Universiti Curtin Malaysia, Sarawak Swinburne University and I-Cats University College. – Bernama

Zahid: Strengthen agriculture sector through TVET

KUALA KUBU BARU: The country's agricultural industry needs to be strengthened through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to reduce dependence on food imports, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the move was important to ensuring food security, including in the dairy sector, to meet the needs of the domestic market. Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development minister, said the National TVET Council is prepared to channel assistance and collaborate with agricultural training institutions nationwide to implement the initiative, especially through high-tech courses to attract the interest of young people. "The existing modules are good, but in my view, integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and modern teaching pedagogy into TVET is essential. Learning should comprise only 30 per cent classroom sessions, with the remaining 70 per cent conducted in the field to give students real-world exposure to agriculture," said Zahid, who is also National TVET Council chairman. He said this at a press conference after opening the groundbreaking ceremony of the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation's (PKPS) "Ehsan Dairy Farm" Dairy Cattle Complex in Kuala Kubu Baru today. Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and PKPS Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Mohamad Khairil Mohamad Razi. Zahid added that premium salaries should be offered to TVET graduates in the agricultural sector, rather than being tied to a minimum wage of RM1,700, to attract more young people to join the industry. He said TVET graduates holding the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level Three are eligible to receive a minimum salary of RM3,000, while those with SKM Level Five qualifications can earn up to RM5,000 a month. "SKM Level Five is equivalent to a diploma, and due to strong market demand and high employability, it can command a premium salary of around RM5,000. "This will certainly encourage young people to venture into this field," he said. On "Ehsan Dairy Farm", Zahid described it as a game changer for PKPS in its efforts to boost local dairy production, thereby helping to reduce the country's reliance on imports. "We import about 94.7 per cent of the country's dairy needs, which is worth RM4.6 million a year. "The prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan recently, highlighted that one of the significant burdens we face is the need to import food products, including dairy, from abroad. "This PKPS initiative is a proactive step towards significantly reducing our reliance on dairy imports," he said. The Ehsan Dairy Farm, expected to begin operations in early 2026, will be located on about 16.7 hectares at the Sungai Tengi PKPS Farm. It will house more than 1,200 high-quality Jersey-Holstein Friesian (F2) dairy cows from Australia, a country renowned for its expertise in industrial dairy farming.
