Ahmedabad crash: In touch with UK foreign secretary, Portuguese, Canadian counterparts, says EAM
New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said he was in touch with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and also with his Canadian and Portuguese counterparts in connection with the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Besides 169 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian national were on board the flight that crashed on Thursday.
Air India has confirmed that 241 people on board were killed in the crash. One person has survived and is currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the accident.
"In touch with FS @DavidLammy of the UK, FM @PauloRangel_pt of Portugal and FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada regarding the Ahmedabad plane crash. Expressed our profound condolences and offered fullest support in this hour of grief," Jaishankar said in a post on X.
At least 265 people were killed on Thursday when the London-bound Air India plane crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad and burst into a ball of fire less than a minute after takeoff, an official said.
The dead in the country's worst air disaster in recent times included several people on the ground.
The external affairs minister was in Europe on an official visit when the tragedy struck the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Later, Lammy, reposting Jaishankar's post, said, "The devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad has impacted both British and Indian families. I've spoken with @DrSJaishankar to express my profound condolences. As one of our closest partners, the UK stands ready to provide any assistance India may need during this difficult time."
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar addressed a joint press conference in Marseille with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot.
On a query on the Air India plane crash on Thursday, he said, "It's been really a very tragic event, and I have been in the last 24 hours, in touch with my counterparts in the UK, Portugal and Canada because they also lost their citizens."
"We again appreciate very much the condolences, sympathy and support we got from the French government, and I think we will have to wait to see more authoritative news about whatever has been found and what the analysis shows," he said.
Jaishankar on Friday also thanked all foreign leaders and governments for their condolences at the tragic loss of lives in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon.
"Thank all foreign leaders and Governments for their condolences at the tragic loss of lives in the Ahmedabad air crash. We appreciate this deeply," Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The external affairs minister was in Europe on an official visit when the tragedy struck the plane bound for London.
A number of world leaders and embassies of various countries in India have expressed condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu were among the world leaders who on Thursday expressed solidarity with the people of India in the wake of the plane crash.

'In just one decade, over 25 crore Indians have risen above poverty. That's more than the population of most European countries,' Sonowal said. 'This is the Modi guarantee -- delivery with speed, scale and honesty.' Highlighting the economic strides under the Modi government, Sarbananda Sonowal said India's rise to the fourth-largest global economy is just the beginning. 'By 2029, India will be the third-largest economy. We're building the foundation for a Viksit Bharat -- a developed, self-reliant India.' Sonowal cited the rise of India's startup ecosystem -- from 30,000 in 2014 to over 1 lakh today -- as evidence of the country's changing mindset. 'This is a new India, led by young dreamers and doers. Over 1.7 crore youth are now part of this vibrant startup movement.' He also hit out at the Congress, accusing it of 'betraying India's farmers with decades of apathy.' Sonowal pointed to schemes like PM-KISAN, PM Fasal Bima Yojana and increased MSPs as proof that the Modi government was 'restoring dignity and earnings to India's Annadaata.' "Very sad to see this," Akhilesh Yadav expresses sorrow on Air India plane crash
Kannauj (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 14 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed deep sorrow on Saturday over the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. Speaking with the media, the SP chief said the incident was very sad and prayed that no such incidents would happen again. 'The incident that happened in Ahmedabad is very sad. It is very sad to see this, and one wonders how this happened. In today's time when technology has become so advanced... the incident is being investigated. When the investigation report comes, the truth will come out, but we pray that such an incident does not happen again,' Akhilesh Yadav said. The AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft, bound for London's Gatwick, crashed shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday. The airline said 241 people on board the aircraft died in the crash, while only one passenger survived. Earlier in the day, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu issued an order to extend the scrutiny of the Boeing Dreamliner 787 series planes present in the Indian Aircraft fleet after the crash. Naidu further stated that around eight Boeing 787 Series aircraft have already been scrutinised and inspected with immediate urgency. Addressing a press conference here, the Union Civil Aviation Minister said, 'We have very strict safety standards in the the incident happened, we also felt that there is a need to do an extended surveillance of the Boeing 787 Series. DGCA has also given an order to do the extended surveillance for the Boeing 787 planes. There are 34 in our Indian aircraft fleet today. I believe that 8 have already been inspected, and with immediate urgency, all of them are going to be done.' 'Furthermore, as the investigation is going to proceed and the report is going to come, whatever necessary steps need to be taken, we are going to ensure that without any hesitation, we are going to improve every necessary thing that is going to come our way to improve the safety', he added. The Union Minister further informed that Air India has been instructed to facilitate the process of assisting the families of the passengers in every possible way. He added that the bodies are being given to the respective families after confirmation from DNA testing and hoped that this process would be completed soon. The central government has already constituted a high-level multidisciplinary committee for examining the causes leading to the crash of Air India Flight AI-171. (ANI)

Calling the accident an 'unimaginable tragedy,' Kharge offered deepest condolences to the victims of the plane crash. 'Visited the crash site of the devastating aeroplane tragedy which has shaken the nation. My deepest condolences and thoughts are with the families of the victims, crew, pilot and people on the ground who have lost their lives, including medical students. It is an unimaginable tragedy. The country is mourning and our prayers are with the bereaved,' Kharge wrote on X Kharge was accompanied by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Pawan Khera and others. Earlier, Kharge said that it is not right to blame anyone for the plane crash, but 'whoever is responsible should be held accountable.' 'At the time of such a tragedy, no one should compete to take credit. Someone takes pictures, someone goes and meet people. We only want families to get courage to face sorrow. Now that the black box has been found, we will see what the outcome is, because it is not right to blame someone on the spot. Compensation should be given; apart from this, whoever is responsible should be held accountable,' Kharge said. Kharge urged the party's workers to provide assistance to the people affected in the tragedy. 'I would request my party workers and leaders to keep helping the people. If they need anything, medicine or anything else which is not available here, they should arrange for that too,' he said. The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Ahmedabad to London with 242 passengers crashed in Meghaninagar area shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. Only one person out of the 242 people on board survived the crash. As per Air India, the passengers comprised 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals. (ANI)
