No working smoke detectors found in Michigan mobile home after deadly fire, authorities say
"We did find that there were no working smoke detectors in the house," said Brandon Township Fire Chief Dave Kwapis.
Neighbors told CBS News Detroit on Monday that it took over half an hour for first responders to reach the scene.
A review of the response time showed that a 911 call came in at 7:14 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, and the sheriff's office dispatched fire personnel at 7:15 a.m. Multiple units were on their way at 7:17 a.m. and 7:18 a.m.
Brandon Township Fire Chief David Kwapis said it took a total of six minutes from the 911 call to arrival on the scene, but when the fire department arrived, the home was fully engulfed.
"When you're waiting, especially in the circumstances that occurred that day, it seems like an eternity. It seems like it is hours. Quite literally," Kwapis said.
He noted that the fire was burning so hot that there wasn't much the department could do to rescue the woman inside.
"When you're at a fully involved fire, you have temps that are somewhere between 1500 and 2000 degrees [that] is unsustainable for life, unfortunately," Kwapis said.
Kwapis said temperatures that hot caused the siding on neighboring homes to melt. He said that to avoid similar fires, smoke detectors can make all the difference.
"Everyone should have a working smoke detector in their house," he said. "If you do not have a working smoke detector in your house, please, please, please, I cannot implore you enough to contact your local fire department. There are programs out there where we can provide a smoke detector and put them in your home."
Kwapis said that in an emergency, every minute can feel much longer, even when responders are working as fast as they can to get to where they need to be.

Michigan father charged, accused of abusing his child
A 39-year-old man accused of abusing his child has been charged, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Michael Antonelli was arraigned on Thursday for first-degree child abuse. He received a $250,000 cash/surety bond, no 10%, and must wear a tether if released. He is ordered not to have contact with anyone under age 18, including his children. Prosecutors said Antonelli allegedly abused his child between May 14 and June 2. Antonelli and his wife took the child to the hospital, where doctors determined that the child suffered multiple fractures, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office. Further investigation resulted in the child abuse charge. "This is an extremely sad and difficult case. Our focus remains where it must be, on protecting children and pursuing justice. It is essential that we allow the judicial system to run its course, guided by evidence and due process," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in a statement. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20, and a preliminary exam is scheduled for Aug. 27.

NBA guard Malik Beasley evicted from Detroit high-rise apartment for unpaid rent: Report
Malik Beasley's return to the Detroit Pistons next season — or any other NBA team — is uncertain amid a federal investigation into his alleged involvement with gambling and prop bets. However, if he was to re-sign with the Pistons, he'll apparently have to find a different place to live in Detroit. Beasley, 28, was evicted from his high-rise apartment in Detroit on Wednesday, the Detroit News' Robert Snell reports. An eviction order was filed in the 36th District Court two months after the guard was sued for failing to pay rent on the downtown Detroit residence. The NBA guard has been sued twice for not paying a total $21,500 in rent for his apartment at The Stott, the high-rise building owned by Bedrock Detroit, which is part of Cleveland Cavaliers' owner Dan Gilbert's business portfolio. Beasley did not respond to the second of the lawsuits accusing him of failing to pay $7,355, resulting in a default judgment being filed against him before 36th District Judge Andrew Bradley-Baskin. The nine-year veteran is currently a free agent and was reportedly set to agree on a three-year, $42 million contract with the Pistons before news of the federal gambling investigation was reported. Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, pointed out to reporters that his client has not been charged with any crime. Following reports of the gambling probe, Beasley was also sued by Hazan Sports Management Group for breach of contract, alleging he owes the agency $650,000 that was unpaid when he terminated his contract. Despite the gambling investigation and lawsuits, Beasley insists that he will play in the NBA next season, whether with the Pistons or other teams that have apparently expressed interest. During the past month, he has posted videos on social media of him training in Miami (in addition to going to nightclubs and traveling in Europe). On Wednesday, he posted a story to Snapchat saying, We gotta be prepared to come back to the Pistons, or, like I said, there's some other teams interested as well." The Pistons appear to have moved on, signing guard Caris LeVert in free agency and working out a sign-and-trade deal for Duncan Robinson, who presumably fills Beasley's role as a long-range shooter off the bench. Last season, Beasley averaged 16.3 points and shot 42% on 366 3-point attempts. He was Detroit's third-leading scorer and appeared in all 82 games as the Pistons returned to the playoffs after finishing with the NBA's worst record during the previous season. That performance earned him a second-place finish in NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting.
