CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby slams Naidu's silence on resettlement of Polavaram-displaced

The Hindu16 hours ago
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby on Sunday (August 17) expressed his dismay over the silence on the part of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Members of Parliament from the NDA in Andhra Pradesh on the Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R&R) of the displaced families of the Polavaram project.
Mr. Baby and CPI(M) MP John Brittas on Sunday concluded their two-day field visit to the Polavaram project submergence area, where they took stock of the implementation of the R&R component. The duo inspected the R&R colonies and project-affected villages along the banks of rivers Godavari and Sabari in Y. Ramavaram, Rekhapalli, Yetapaka Mandals in the Chintoor Agency of Alluri Sitarama Raju district.
Addressing the affected families at Ramavaram in V.R. Puram Mandal, Mr. Baby said the party was not against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's vision to develop the capital city of Amaravati, but disapproved of his silence about the Polavaram-displaced and R&R component.
'The Members of Parliament of the previous three terms (2014, 2019 and 2024) represented by the TDP and the YSRCP never raised their voice for the Polavaram R&R in Parliament. All of them failed to address the concerns of the Polavaram-displaced,' said Mr. Baby.
He promised to return with an action plan to lead the fight for the resettlement and rehabilitation of the Polavaram-displaced, as guaranteed by the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
'On the ground, the nexus between the bureaucracy and public representatives is reflected in the execution of the R&R component. An inquiry should be ordered into the irregularities in the R&R component, beginning from 2014-19 term,' said Mr. Baby.
In his address, Mr. Brittas promised to raise his voice for the Polavaram-displaced at the national level. CPI(M) Central Committee Member K. Lokanadham, ASR district secretary Boppena Kiran and other leaders were present.

Kerala Minister slams Suresh Gopi's 'vanara' remarks in voters' list manipulation issue

Union Minister Suresh Gopi 's "vanara" remark against those who raised voters' list manipulation charges against him invited sharp criticism from Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty on Monday. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency In a hard-hitting Facebook post, Sivankutty said the remarks were "insulting, unfortunate and undemocratic". He also said it's unbecoming of a people's representative. Stating that complaints about electoral rolls are necessary to ensure the transparency of the democratic process, Sivankutty said ridiculing and demonising those who file such complaints will erode citizens' trust in democracy. "Suresh Gopi should retract his remarks and apologise to the public. Those in responsible positions should be careful to use decent language," he said. The senior CPI(M) leader further said that even if there are political differences, it is essential to avoid personal insults. The minister's remarks came a day after Union Minister Suresh Gopi said that there was no need for him to answer to the voters' list manipulation charges raised by the Congress and the Left parties, and the Election Commission of India would give them a reply in this regard. Live Events While replying to reporters' questions, Gopi had also called the persons who have raised voters' list manipulation charges against him as "vanaras" (monkeys). He said those "vanaras" who have raised the charges could go to court to get answers. District Congress Committee (DCC) president Joseph Tajet had come down heavily against the "vanara" remarks, stating that the Congress party's culture does not permit them to respond in the same language. Tajet charged that the union minister was making such remarks now to cover up his faults and divert people's attention. Stating that Gopi might have made the "vanara" remark by looking at the mirror, the Congress leader further said the party would not backtrack from its allegations against him at any cost. The Congress, last week, made fresh allegations against Gopi, accusing him of submitting a false declaration to be included in the voters' list for the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency during the 2024 general election. The Congress has also filed a police complaint against the actor-turned-politician.

Trump tariffs start pinching Americans: Food prices spike; fresh and dry vegetables 40% pricier in July

US President Donald Trump's tariffs have finally started pinching Americans as food prices have spiked, with fresh and dry vegetables' prices rising 40% in July. The wholesale inflation last month was at a three-year high and retail inflation was at a six-month high. People shop in a supermarket in Manhattan, New York City, US, June 10, 2022. (Photo: Reuters) US President Donald Trump's tariffs are finally pinching Americans as prices of everyday essentials have started rising. As inflation reached new highs in July, food prices were up 2.9 per cent, with wholesale prices of fresh and dry vegetables up 40 per cent month-on-month. Last month, the wholesale inflation reached a three-year high and retail inflation reached a six-month high. The Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures wholesale inflation, rose 0.9 per cent month-on-month in July, compared to the 0.2 per cent increase that was forecast. The year-on-year increase was 3.3 per cent, which was a three-year-high. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD ALSO READ — Trump's tariffs & mass-firing: Economists fear 'stagflation' is on the horizon As the PPI tracks the change in prices for producers, it is an indicator of retail inflation in the coming months as producers largely pass on increased costs to consumers. At a time when the retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI), is already at a six-month high, the rising PPI suggests that Americans will continue to face price rises for the time being. The data 'points to pipeline inflation that's likely to spill into consumer prices in the months ahead', Michelle Green, a former Labor Department economist, told Axios. Prices of food and everyday essentials expected to keep rising Under Trump, prices for several foods are already on the rise. The CPI data has shown that prices have increased by 5.8 per cent on meat, 3.1 per cent on poultry, 16.4 per cent on eggs, and 14.5 per cent on coffee. As certain foodstuffs, such as coffee, are not grown in the United States, tariffs are bound to raise costs. Foods are not the only essentials getting costlier. Prices for household electronics rose 5 per cent month-on-month in July and core inflation, which excludes prices for food and fuel, rose to 3.1 last month from 2.9 the previous month — well above the Federal Reserve's preferred upper limit of 2 per cent. As more and more tariffs kick in, prices are expected to keep rising. Moreover, there is evidence that sellers have not started passing on a greater burden of increased costs from tariffs onto consumers. In the initial weeks of tariffs' imposition, the rise in prices was subdued as previous inventory was being cleared and sellers were reluctant to pass on the increased cost to consumers, perhaps in the hope that tariffs would be short-lived. But that has now changed. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The share of tariffs that consumers ultimately pay has been rising over time, starting at only 22 per cent of tariffs' costs and it is expected to rise to 67 per cent of increased costs by October, according to an analysis by Goldman Sachs published by The New York Times.

Judiciary is sole independent entity under PM Modi's regime: CPI national secretary K Narayana

VIJAYAWADA: CPI national secretary K Narayana likened the Indian judiciary to the mythological warrior Abhimanyu, asserting that it is the last bastion striving to uphold justice and democracy in the country. Speaking on the current political landscape on Sunday, he expressed alarm over the Centre's alleged control over key institutions, including the President's office, the Election Commission, the CBI, and the Enforcement Directorate. He accused the BJP-led NDA government of undermining the elected State governments, and manipulating democratic institutions. Narayana highlighted the judiciary as the only institution resisting this overreach, emphasising its critical role in safeguarding India's democratic framework. He criticised the Central government and the President for disregarding the judiciary's call to respect the elected State governments. He also pointed to the actions of nominated governors, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where the governor has openly spoken against opposition parties, as evidence of interference in State governance. Narayana claimed that the States without a 'double engine' BJP government face targeted attacks from the Central agencies. Of the five major national institutions—President, Election Commission, Judiciary, NITI Aayog, and CBI—Narayana alleged that four are under the Modi government's control, leaving the judiciary as the sole independent entity. Warning of a potential crisis at the national level, Narayana called for all anti-BJP forces to unite to counter this threat. The CPI is actively discussing the formation of a broad-based 'Anti-BJP Front' at its upcoming National Conference in Chandigarh, starting September 22, to strengthen opposition and protect India's democratic fabric, Narayana said.
