New "Cars"-themed changes are coming to Frontierland. 3:33 A national park-themed attraction is on its way to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Disney announced Tuesday that Piston Peak National Park will be the "largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom," continuing "the sweeping storytelling tradition that has crossed Liberty Square and Frontierland since opening day." Piston Peak National Park draws on the history and themes of the American frontier and the Rocky Mountains, which stretch from northern British Columbia down to New Mexico, and will feature "an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers," according to Disney. Visitors will be able to explore a "visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more," all inspired by Disney and Pixar's "Cars" universe and its "wheelderness." Disney's Imagineers are even basing Piston Peak's architecture on that of the real-world "Parkitecture" style, which focuses on blending buildings with the surrounding natural landscape harmoniously. To accommodate the work required to bring Piston Peak to life, Frontierland's Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat attractions will close to visitors starting July 7. Magic Kingdom is set to expand its storytelling landscape once again, this time with a high-octane journey into the wilds of Piston Peak National Park, a new land inspired by the 'Cars' universe and set within the grandeur of the American frontier. As part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history, Piston Peak will add to the sweeping narrative arc that guests experience as they travel westward across the park, connecting the spirit of Liberty Square and Frontierland through nature, innovation, and character-driven adventure. From Liberty Square to the 'Wheelderness' Piston Peak National Park builds on a storytelling tradition that starts with colonial roots in Liberty Square and winds through the North Woods, New Orleans, and the Arizona desert. This new land continues that journey west with towering pines, geysers, rugged cliffs, and a high-speed rally race through the wilderness set in a richly themed national park inspired by the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains. Explore Piston Peak Guests will encounter iconic sights from the Disney and Pixar 'Cars' world, reimagined through the lens of national park adventures. The land's architecture will follow a rustic style known as 'Parkitecture', a design philosophy created by the National Park Service that blends man-made structures seamlessly into the surrounding environment. Disney Releases More Details On Its New Cars-Themed Land
Last year, Disney announced an entire land dedicated to Pixar's Cars at its Magic Kingdom Park in Orlando. Aside from a few illustrations that, actually, looked pretty awesome, the details were otherwise scarce. But today, the company has revealed new information on its next big expansion—including a name. Say goodbye to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America (RIP), and say hello to Piston Peak National Park (which, you probably don't remember, was a real place in Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue movie). The new Cars area will be ripe with thick pine forests and snowy mountain peaks, and include a river that runs through the entire land. It will be the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom. Photo by: Disney Disney Imagineers drew inspiration from America's national parks for this new land, with the Piston Peak mountain range inspired by Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The faux national park will also include a visitor's lodge, a Ranger headquarters, and walking trails alongside two designated Cars attractions. The first attraction, an off-road rally-style ride, will allow guests to weave through the forests and over Piston Peak on a trackless ride vehicle with new characters from the Cars franchise. Disney promises it will be "just like a real race." A second, yet-to-be-named attraction will be geared toward smaller children and families. Guests who want to experience Tom Sawyer Island and the Riverboat before work begins on the new land have until July 7. Disney hasn't said exactly when the new land will open. But for such a massive expansion, don't expect to see anything until at least 2027 or 2028.
