Bank Rakyat launches Mastercard Touch Card for visually impaired
This move also makes Bank Rakyat the first Islamic bank in the country to offer this inclusive card solution.
The Mastercard Touch Card is uniquely designed with tactile notches on the side of the card to help blind and partially sighted individuals easily distinguish between debit, credit, and prepaid cards.
A rounded notch represents debit cards, a square notch indicates credit cards, and a triangular notch signifies prepaid cards. This feature also helps ensure the card is correctly orientated when used at ATMs or payment terminals.
Bank Rakyat's chief executive officer, Ahmad Shahril Mohd Shariff, said the introduction of the Touch Card reflects the bank's commitment to enhancing banking experiences for all Malaysians, including those with visual impairments.
"Financial services should be inclusive and accessible to everyone. Through our collaboration with PERTIS and Mastercard, we have integrated the Touch Card feature into selected card offerings to meet the specific needs of the visually impaired community, going beyond compliance to deliver solutions that genuinely improve everyday banking," he said in a statement.
As part of the initial rollout in April 2025, the Touch Card feature has been implemented in two card portfolios: the Bank Rakyat Muslimah Credit Card-i, featuring a square notch, and the Bank Rakyat Debit Card-i, with a rounded notch.
This initiative follows consultations with the Persatuan Orang-Orang Cacat Penglihatan Islam Malaysia (PERTIS), which provided insights into the daily challenges faced by the visually impaired when using bank cards—especially with the shift towards flat card designs that lack embossed text.
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, nearly 64,000 people in the country are visually impaired. Globally, the World Health Organisation estimates over 2.2 billion people live with visual impairments.
Mastercard Malaysia and Brunei country manager Beena Pothen said the collaboration is part of Mastercard's broader goal of building a more inclusive digital economy.
"The integration of Mastercard's Touch Card design with Bank Rakyat, the first Islamic bank in Malaysia to adopt this feature, reflects Mastercard's dedication to working with like-minded partners globally to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.
"Today, Mastercard is excited to put this simple but very meaningful design solution at the fingertips of Malaysians," he said.

Mastercard beats profit estimates on strong travel demand
FILE PHOTO: A screen displays the company logo for Mastercard Inc. on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., February 29, 2024. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File photo (Reuters) -Mastercard surpassed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter profit on Thursday, driven by strong consumer spending on travel and leisure. A mix of higher inflation, interest rate pressures and tariff uncertainty has done little to slow American travelers and shoppers so far, offering a boost to payments firms and big banks alike in the first half of 2025. Payments firms are closely tied to everyday consumer behavior, and most transactions - whether for groceries, fuel, or fewer discretionary items - still flow through the same cards and platforms, helping sustain volume, despite some shoppers paring back on non-essential spending. Gross dollar volume - the total value of transactions processed on Mastercard's platform - rose 9% in the quarter. Cross-border volume, which tracks spending on cards outside their country of issue, jumped 15%, pointing to still strong consumer appetite for travel and leisure. The company wrapped up the earnings season for Wall Street's biggest payments processors. Rival Visa posted market-beating results earlier this week, while American Express also managed to surpass Wall Street's expectations. Though analysts caution the momentum may not last if elevated interest rates and rising prices from tariffs begin to strain household budgets, that pressure has yet to show up. In recent years, Mastercard has also diversified its business by expanding into value-added services such as threat intelligence and fraud prevention. Revenue from these services rose 22% on a currency-neutral basis in the quarter. It posted an adjusted profit of $4.15 per share for the three months ended June 30. That compares with Wall Street estimates of $4.03 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. Mastercard's net revenue jumped 17% on a reported basis to $8.1 billion. It beat estimates of $7.97 billion. Shares of the payments giant were up 1.4% before the bell. (Reporting by Prakhar Srivastava and Manya Saini in Bengaluru; Editing by Sriraj Kalluvila)

Malaysia Employers Federation supports 13MP, calls for industry collaboration
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Employers Federation (MEF) has welcomed the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), calling it a bold and inclusive framework for the nation's next development chapter. MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the five-year plan's success hinges on cooperation among government agencies, Parliament, the private sector, and civil society to ensure policies deliver people-centric outcomes. He urged all Malaysians and key stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and support the plan's implementation as it undergoes parliamentary review. "As Malaysia positions itself for high-income and innovation-driven growth by 2030, the 13MP's integrated approach to human capital transformation is both timely and essential," he said in a statement today. "MEF supports the government's continued commitment to workforce upskilling, digital capabilities, and labour market reforms. However, MEF also urges practical alignment with industry needs and increased private sector engagement to ensure policy effectiveness." The 13MP, covering 2026 to 2030, is a key policy document with a budget of RM611 billion. It sets progressive and realistic objectives to spur economic growth, raise household incomes, and ensure inclusive development across all sectors. Syed Hussain proposed more direct fiscal incentives for companies, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and those undergoing digital transformation, that invest in upskilling talent in high-demand sectors. He also recommended co-investment models where the government matches employer contributions for critical skill areas. While MEF commends the centralisation of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) under a unified framework, Syed Hussain said that industry-led governance and performance monitoring are crucial to prevent mismatches. "Employers should be involved in curriculum design, certification, and placement guarantees. Many employers are willing to train but face constraints such as time, costs, productivity trade-offs, and regulatory complexity," he said. He added that successful implementation relies on meaningful employer participation, flexibility in delivery mechanisms, and coherent policies across ministries and agencies.
