Browns list Joe Flacco as starter on initial depth chart
The Browns have listed 40-year-old Joe Flacco as the starting quarterback on the first depth chart of the 2025 season, via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.
Flacco went from the couch to the huddle for the Browns in 2023, lifting the team to the postseason — and upending Damar Hamlin's clone for the CPOY award. Last year, the Browns passed on Flacco. Which made sense. As a fan favorite, the chants would have come early and often for the veteran, once Deshaun Watson continued to underwhelm.
This year, the affinity for Flacco makes him the favorite to start and to play until the Browns are essentially cooked for 2025.
Per the initial chart, Kenny Pickett is the QB2, followed by rookie Dillon Gabriel and rookie Shedeur Sanders.
Later this month, the Browns will have a significant decision to make. Will they carry four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster? If not, who will be the odd man out?

View more Video Transcript We'll start with the Cleveland Browns. Yesterday, Shadoor Sanders, uh, at this point, Shadoor obviously is on everybody's mind, but he is on the depth chart at number 4. Caroline, number 4. So Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, Shadoor. Were you surprised? Uh, well, first of all, I will say that fall camp depth charts are about as valuable as Monopoly money, but it's August 5th, and so we're going to look into it and we're going to nitpick the depth charts and we're gonna make a really, really big deal out of it. And then a month from now we're not going to care what the depth charts looked like in fall camp at the beginning of August. But you asking me, am I surprised that Shadoor Sanders is number 4 on the depth chart? No, I am not surprised, and I don't think that anyone should be. I view depth charts as just, let's throw out there just a ranking of how we view these quarterbacks. And is anybody surprised that the Browns value should do Sanders the least when they drafted him in the fifth round? Clearly, the Browns valued Dylan Gabriel more because they drafted Dylan Gabriel, almost 100 spots. Before they drafted Shadoor Sanders, and is anybody surprised that the more senior, more veteran quarterbacks with significantly more NFL experience are getting first and second team reps over these rookies. If you are, frankly, I don't know why you are, you shouldn't be. These mean nothing to me, and it doesn't mean that Shadoor Sanders or Dylan Gabriel can't work themselves into first and second team reps and they can't work themselves up. Through the depth chart, we've even seen both Dylan Gabriel and Shadoor Sanders getting first and second team reps respectively throughout camp so far. This is just the depth chart. It's really just politicking. I think it's really just something to put out there and to give to the media. I don't read too much into it, but can Shado Sanders and Dylan Gabriel work themselves up? If they stay healthy, we'll get into that. Of course they can. I'm just not willing to make a big deal out of this fits. The fifth round draft pick is fourth on the depth chart. If we just say it like that, nobody cares. And this is where I think Browns fans owe our own reporter Jerry Epside a ton of apologies. On inside coverage, we covered this about a month ago, and Joey said, look, I would be shocked if Shadoor was starting early in the season because not only is he 4th on the depth chart, but that also means he gets the 4th most reps. He gets the 4th best opportunities, all of these sort of things that we talk about all the time. But Browns fans, I would implore you, you don't want Shadoor to start early in the season. Look at the schedule. The beginning of the Browns' schedule, they've got the Bengals, the Ravens, the Packers, the Lions, the Vikings, the Steelers, the Dolphins, all in consecutive weeks. This Browns team, even if they play really well, could start 1 in 6. You really want 1 60 and 7 and an absolute pounding all over Shadoor Sanders. I don't. If I'm a Browns fan right now, I got to think more about the long term for once. Like I understand what it's like to be the fan of a team that stinks. And what we do is we want an immediate fix. It's an epic society. We want an injection and everybody loses weight, but that's not the way you win sustainably in the NFL. What the Browns need to do is. Figure out if they have their long term quarterback on the roster, if they have their long-term solution in Shadoor Sanders on the, if the, if they believe that he is the long-term solution, then give the guy time to marinate. So who cares if he's number 4 on the depth chart right now? This shouldn't be about what happens week 1, week 2, week 3. This is about what happens year 1, year 2, year 3, as painful as that is for Browns fans to hear. Close

The fifth-round rookie will start in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, reported. Sanders is also reportedly expected to get first-team reps during Wednesday's joint practice with the Panthers. The Browns' decision to start Sanders in their preseason opener comes as they've been dealing with multiple injuries at quarterback. Kenny Pickett and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel both recently suffered hamstring injuries, while the Browns plan to sit Joe Flacco for Friday's game. As a result of the recent injuries to Pickett and Gabriel, the Browns signed quarterback Tyler Huntley on Tuesday. If Sanders takes the field with the Browns' starting offense on Wednesday, it'll mark the first time in training camp he's taken first-team reps. He's practiced with the second- and third-team offenses in camp, and he was listed as the fourth-string quarterback when the Browns released their first unofficial depth chart on Monday. Sanders was also briefly sidelined in camp due to injury. He didn't participate in team drills in Saturday's practice because of arm soreness, but was back in team drills for Monday's practice. ADVERTISEMENT While Sanders hasn't played Cleveland's top offensive unit yet, he has gotten some reps against his team's top defensive unit. He took snaps with the second-team offense against the first-team defense in the Browns' practice on July 30, completing 2 of 3 passes. The Browns haven't named a starting quarterback yet. However, the 40-year-old Flacco is viewed as the favorite for the job, receiving the most first-team reps to this point. The fact that he's sitting out the preseason opener might also be an indicator that Flacco is the favorite for the job. As for Sanders, he's likely battling for a roster spot based on his placement on the unofficial depth chart and his practice reps. When sharing why he told his father, Deion Sanders, why he doesn't want him at Browns practice yet, Sanders told reporters that he doesn't feel he's where he needs to be with his play quite yet. "I don't want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me," Sanders told reporters on Monday. "I don't want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I got to get to where I'm going, and I know it's a lot I got to do to get there. "It's kind of like I just want everything that I'm doing is just focus on this time, and I don't want no distractions because we know how the media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team, just from him being my own dad showing up. Shedeur Sanders expected to start Browns' first preseason game vs Panthers: report
Shedeur Sanders may be fourth string on the unofficial Browns depth chart right now, but he's getting the nod to start their first preseason game on Friday night. With Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel both dealing with hamstring injuries, reported on Tuesday that Sanders is expected to be the first quarterback under center against the Carolina Panthers on the road. Sanders said on Monday that he didn't want to see his father, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, at practice yet due to not taking any first-team reps. But his father has something to watch right away when the Browns kick off on Friday night. "I don't want him to see me get a couple reps, and he's cheering like a good dad," Sanders said on Monday to reporters, the first time he spoke since his father revealed battling bladder cancer this offseason. "Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I've got to get to where I'm going, and I know it's a lot I've got to do to get there. Sanders added that it's "a gift and a curse" having an NFL legend father, because while it would be nice to have that support in person, he knows how it would be for those on the outside. "We know how everybody would take it, as taking away from the team, with my own dad showing up. It's a gift and a curse at the same time," Sanders said. Sanders, though, will get the first chance to show what he can do on the NFL stage with the Browns' offense. The fifth-round pick also gets the start due to head coach Kevin Stefanski not wanting 40-year-old Joe Flacco, the team's presumptive starter, to risk injury in Week 1 of preseason. The Browns also signed quarterback Tyler Huntley due to the Pickett and Gabriel injuries, though he's likely to come off the bench when Sanders' time on the field is over. The report added that Sanders has only seen reps against the first-team Browns defense, a formidable group, a total of four snaps, which came last week. But Sanders may have some chemistry issues with starting players like Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tilliman, Diontae Johnson and David Njoku considering the lack of reps. Sanders' accuracy, though, has been a talking point at Browns camp, and it's been in a good way. It was one of his biggest strengths while playing under his father at Colorado, and he's been showcasing that in Berea, Ohio thus far. Sanders knows the football world will be watching closely on Friday night just as they were during the 2025 NFL Draft, as he tumbled down the draft board to day three, where the Browns finally took him with the 144th overall pick. Gabriel was taken in the third round. Lastly, Sanders was held out of Saturday's training camp practice due to arm soreness, but he was participating fully on Monday. So, he is expected to be at full strength, and this will be his first opportunity to show the Browns and the rest of the NFL what he can do at this level.
