Jimmy Thelin pleased to see Aberdeen making cup progress again
Sivert Heltne Nilsen headed home the opener after 32 minutes and Kusini Yengi added a second five minutes later.
Substitute Leighton Clarkson's cool finish in the 79th minute capped off a dominant showing for the Dons, who were able to shake off the disappointment of losing their opening two William Hill Premiership fixtures.
'The first two games in the league have been not too bad in terms of performance, but the result hasn't been there,' said Thelin, whose side won the Scottish Cup last season.
'We see it every year that some teams from the Premiership get knocked out.
'There were a lot of supporters there that had travelled from far away and they need to see their team give 100 per cent.
'You need a lot of good players to be in a team that make semi-finals and finals — the competition has to be there.'
The Pittodrie side can now look forward to their Europa League play-off clash with FCSB on Thursday evening with a renewed sense of optimism.
Thelin was also pleased with the contribution of Yengi, who netted his first goal for the club.
The striker has come in for some criticism for his displays in the defeats to Hearts and Celtic but relished the physical battle with Morton's backline.
'I think his performance overall was better in how he used his body,' Thelin added.
'Sometimes you get one chance. It's not so many players who score with every chance they get so we have to create more chances in the box to help our strikers also.'
Morton boss Dougie Imrie admitted his team did not do enough to trouble their Premiership opponents.
Dimitar Mitov in the visitors' goal did not have a save to make.
'It was always going to be a difficult afternoon, playing a top team in Aberdeen that are the Scottish Cup holders,' he said.
'Overall I don't think we did enough to cause Aberdeen problems — we could have played for a month and not scored.
'I've got to give credit to Aberdeen, they are a top outfit and have got some really good players.
'We are disappointed to lose out in the manner that we did, just the quality of Aberdeen cut us open for the goals.'

David Martindale's reaction to his side's Premier Sports Cup exit By Ian Steven A blockbuster quarter-final showdown with Rangers was a prize tantalisingly just out of reach for the Lions as Livingston collapsed to a buoyant Hibernian side in the Premier Sports Cup. A first half header from Thibualt Klidje and a sickening late screamer from a full 30 yards out by Josh Mulligan put paid to any dreams David Martindale had of repeating his unrequited love affair with the League Cup, with the manager admitting his West Lothian side were off the pace and dealt a valuable lesson by their Edinburgh opponents. 'I don't think we deserved to go through', the manager stated. 'I think Hibs deserved to go through over the balance. I don't think there's much in the game. First half, we lose our goal at a really poor time, especially being a set play in the run up to half time. 'So you find yourself in the dressing room one down. But I don't think there was a lot in the game. I actually think we're dominating more of the ball in the first half. Second half. I thought the change of shape really helped us and put Hibs under a bit of pressure. We looked like a team that maybe could get the next goal, and then Mulligan comes up with a 30 yarder. 'That's an incredible goal, a good individual goal, and then the game runs away for us at that point. 'I think we spoke about this as a group. That's the first time our group have come up against a top six team, so we played Premiership opponents over the year. Ross County and St. Johnson last year and then obviously Kilmarnock this year twice, played Falkirk four times last year. So I think that was probably the real first test as a group, and there is a gap between that top section in the bottom six. 'So I Hibs are flying at the moment. They've got real positive energy around them. They're in a good moment and that was our first test, and I don't think there was a lot in the game. I think Hibs deserve to go through, but I don't think there was a lot in the game. And if you take out the Mulligan strike, I was fairly happy." Livingston's only real chances came from a Robbie Muiread run through on goal, but the striker stumbled at the worst possible time, and a couple of Zak Rudden headers that flashed over the bar, leaving Martindale convinced the game had offered a valuable lesson to his charges against Premiership opposition. 'Wee bit off the performance. But that's the Premiership level. That's what you're up against. You kind of get crucified. We probably got away with mistakes last year in terms of maybe not dealing with the safe play properly, but we don't get punished. "Maybe not getting pressure on the ball for 25-30 yards per year goal and you don't get punished. But that's what happens against the bigger clubs, the top six clubs. 'The players are gonna have to get their head around the fact that will the one difference from last year to this year is going to be the adversity from losing games of football, and it's really important that we don't allow that to bite into a working week. We'll deal with the moment today. We'll deal with that tomorrow. And then I'm not going to touch on it again. "And we need to approach the season in a very similar vein in terms of one game at a time. Don't really look too much at a day. Don't really look too much about the past games. Don't use the negative energy, use the positive. Just focus on that next game.'

The defender worked his way through the academy ranks and became the B team's captain. Fraser was handed his first team debut in a 5-2 victory over Dundee at Ibrox in May last year and signed a contract extension the very next day. He went on to make five first team appearances for the Gers in all competitions, including an appearance against Tottenham in the Europa League last season. Fraser spent the second half of last season on loan at Livingston and played 23 times across all competitions. He was a key figure as Livi sealed an instant return to the Scottish Premiership by winning the play-offs. Fraser returned to Ibrox at the end of his loan spell and was in and around the first team during pre-season, and was also named in the Gers' initial Champions League qualifying squad. But he's now heading back to the Championship after sealing a move to Dunfermline Athletic on Friday. This time, the move is a permanent one. After linking-up with Neil Lennon's side, Fraser said he felt it was now time to play regular football and "show that I'm more than capable of holding my own." A club I grew up dreaming and believing I could play for every single day as a young kid. "To say I have went onto achieve this makes me so proud. "From the age of seven at the very start of the academy all the way to now, I've given absolutely everything I could possibly give everyday to the football club. "I've experienced some amazing highs but some tough lows but I've always kept the same attitude no matter what. "I want to say a massive thank you to all of the staff in the academy, first team and behind the scenes who I have worked with and under. "You have worked tirelessly with me over the years to help me become a better player and person. "Secondly a thank you to all of the teammates I shared the changing room and pitch with. Fraser left Rangers despite the club's glaring need for left-back cover. Jefte looks set to return to Brazil with Palmeiras, while Ridvan Yilmaz has been frozen out under Russell Martin. A reinforcement has now arrived, however, with the Gers sealing a loan deal for Jayden Meghoma. The 19-year old has joined the Light Blues from Brentford for the season. Nottingham Forest's goalkeeper coach was overly enthusiastic celebrating his side's opening goal on Sunday and smashed his head on the dugout, requiring stitches Nottingham Forest's goalkeeper coach needed medical attention after being too enthusiastic with his celebration, resulting in him smacking his head and requiring stitches. Nuno Espirito Santo 's side began the season in ideal fashion on Sunday as they saw off Brentford at the City Ground. Last season's top scorer Chris Wood kept up his scoring habit and needed just five minutes to find the opener. But coach Rui Barbosa was clearly very excitable and smacked his head on the top of the dugout as he celebrated. It resulted in him needing six stitches to patch up the injury with Nuno admitting he later felt dizzy. He said: "He has six stitches! It was a nasty one. A bad one. He was dizzy." Forest were 3-0 up by half-time, all but wrapping up the game as they begun the year in impressive fashion. Wood grabbed another in first-half stoppage time with Dan Ndoye also getting in on the act as they look to prove that last year's success was not a one off. Nuno said: 'I am delighted. The way we started the game was amazing. We played good, we dominated, we controlled … the goal in the first five minutes settled the team and the energy of the stadium. With the exception of a moment before the third goal, we did not allow Brentford too many things.' Another massive plus for Forest was the confirmation of two new signings, who were showcased to the City Ground before kick-off. Omari Hutchinson joins from Ipswich Town after the club saw several offers rejected, before eventually striking a deal for the winger. Manchester City playmaker James McAtee has also joined but both men were signed too late to play in Sunday's opening game. Forest will play in Europe this year, taking a place in the Europa League after Crystal Palace's demise, and Nuno had wanted to land more new faces. Ndoye was one of those and the Nottingham boss was full of praise for how he performed on his debut. He said: 'Today we couldn't have asked for anymore, the City Ground was loud and bouncing, it was a beautiful day for us. Dan (Ndoye) played well today, he stuck to his defensive tasks which is always important, but he is so talented and honestly, I think he has much more to give.'
