Burglars caused thousands of pounds of shop damage
Daniel Clerkson, 32, targeted Ashington's Tesco Express three times and Co-op twice in May and June this year, stealing bottles of alcohol and packets of chocolate brownies, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
He was joined on his last two raids by David Chilvers, 25, and from Blyth.
Both admitted multiple counts of non-dwelling burglary with Clerkson jailed for three years and Chilvers for 18 months.
Clerkson, who had about 100 offences on his criminal record including 66 theft-related crimes, first smashed his way into the Tesco store at about 04:30 BST on 31 May, prosecutor Jordan Parkinson said.
Having used a hammer to destroy a window, he stole bottles of vodka, the court heard.
'Appalling record'
Clerkson returned the following day at about 04:20 and smashed his way in again through another window, this time taking £1,360 worth of alcohol, Ms Parkinson said.
The damage was estimated to have cost £4,000 to repair, the court heard, with Clerkson, of no fixed abode, identified through CCTV and a footprint he left at the scene.
He smashed the front window of the Co-op at about 05:00 on 2 June, and took bottles of alcohol worth £260, the court heard.
On 7 June, Clerkson and Chilvers used an axe to smash their way into the Tesco again, taking £1,700 worth of alcohol and £800 from a till they hacked open with the weapon, Ms Parkinson said.
On 11 June, the pair broke a window to get into the Co-op, from where they stole £100 worth of alcohol and £10 worth of chocolate brownies, the court heard.
The damage to the Co-op was estimated to cost £5,000 to repair with the shop losing £7,000 a day in takings while it had to be shut, Ms Parkinson said.
The court heard Clerkson was currently on prison recall until 2027, having been jailed for robbery.
Judge Roberts Adams said Clerkson had an "appalling" criminal record.
Chilvers, of Cowley Place in Cowpen, Blyth, had more than 40 previous offences on his criminal record.

Detroit police, community leaders speak on rise in crime this summer: "We need to come together in this city"
A community is reeling after two children were shot and injured while sleeping in their beds early Thursday morning in what Detroit police are calling a senseless act of violence on the city's east side. "Any time a child or a person gets shot in the city of Detroit, that's one too many individuals," said Detroit Police Assistant Chief Eric Ewing. While addressing reporters after the shooting, Ewing mentioned the city's efforts to address what many are calling the epidemic of crime in the metro area. "We need to come together in this city. As you know, crime reduction in the city has been going down year after year. Currently, we are down about 15% with homicides and 30% non-fatal shootings, but that's still not enough," said Ewing. We reached out to Chief Todd Bettison on Thursday to learn how this shooting could impact the city's response to rising community violence. His team said that the department has spoken about its efforts at numerous scenes and directed us to use any previous statements. On Tuesday, Bettison underlined the recent approval of increased parental responsibility fines for children who break curfew. "We need to have something to have leverage, to have parents actually know where their kids are," Bettison said. CBS News Detroit spoke with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who acknowledges that this summer's rising rates of crimes committed by teenagers are making the problem even worse. "Now, I think there have been some changes in the juvenile justice system in the last year or two that I don't think there's enough consequence for these teen shootings, but we'll have to sit down and deal with it. We know what the problem is, and we need to focus on it," said Duggan. To fight that, FORCE Detroit, one of the city's Community Violence Intervention groups, is working on the front lines to actively change the root causes of crime in different neighborhoods – through targeted therapy, mentoring and physical activity. "I'm tired of seeing our children be harmed because of the decisions of individuals who put their emotions or their disputes over the safety of the community," said Dujuan "Zoe" Kennedy, executive director of Force Detroit. Community leaders say they hope the recent changes to curfew fines and the renewed focus on providing parents with resources to aid their families will help as well.

LA County man faces 350 years in prison for murdering teen and shooting at 4 others
A Los Angeles County court sentenced a 34-year-old man to spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a 17-year-old girl outside her Long Beach home and shooting at four other teenagers last year. In March, a jury found Troy Lamar Fox guilty of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder. The charges carried a sentence of 358 years to life in prison, which was imposed on July 31. Fox has prior convictions for attempted robbery and making criminal threats, according to the LA County District Attorney's Office. Fox shot and killed 17-year-old Briana Soto outside her home on March 26, 2024. Prosecutors said she was walking home from work. Soto's mother Ana Morales said she had just gotten off the phone with Briana when she heard gunshots outside their Long Beach home. When she called her daughter back on the phone, a man answered, but she could not understand his English. The Long Beach Police Department said they found DNA evidence and footage that tied fox to Soto's death. "Briana Soto had her whole life ahead of her — she was getting ready for her prom, her 18th birthday, and graduation," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. "While this punishment cannot undo the pain he caused, it is a step toward justice for Briana, her loved ones, and our community." Prosecutors said Fox shot at four more teens two weeks later. The teens survived. Three months after shooting at the four teens, police arrested Fox after witnesses spotted firearms inside his car. Investigators recovered six firearms during the arrest..

Reduction in knife-related robberies in UK's high-risk areas
Robberies involving a knife, or the threat of one, have reduced in most of the UK's high-risk areas, according to Home Office data. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the 6% overall annual reduction in knife-enabled robbery incidents is a direct result of targeted police action. A dedicated police taskforce was set up in October last year focused on seven forces – Metropolitan Police Service, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Avon and Sommerset and British Transport Police. These areas had seen a steep rise in incidents between July 2023 and June 2024, accounting for 70% of knife-enabled robbery at the time. Drones, knife arches and detection dogs are among the tactics being used in an attempt to bring down the number of incidents, with the forces also increasing visible patrols and the number of plain clothes officers on the streets. The West Midlands saw the largest drop, with a 25% reduction in incidents in the past year. Meanwhile, Greater Manchester saw a 4% increase in incidents in comparison to last year. Ms Cooper said: 'Since day one, we have acted with urgency to turn the tide on knife crime, which destroys lives and devastates communities. 'When we came to office, knife-enabled robbery was increasing at a concerning rate, but we have now started to drive numbers of those offences down through the work of our dedicated taskforces, and as a result, we have also seen the first small reduction in overall knife crime for four years. 'The drop in knife-enabled robbery in key problem areas shows the impact that our strong new action on knife crime is having, but we now need to supercharge these efforts through more smart and targeted interventions. 'Anyone can be a victim of knife crime, but new 'hex mapping' technology shows that the vast majority of knife crime is concentrated in a relatively small, hyper-concentrated number of areas. 'As part of the plan for change, we will use that new technology to support our mission to halve knife crime over the next decade. In the 2020s, the way to be tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime is also to be smart on crime, using the latest technology to target criminals and problem areas, and keep the country safe.' A ban on ninja swords also comes into force on Friday, as part of the Government's commitment to halve knife crime in the next decade. At least a thousand of the weapons have been handed in as part of a surrender scheme. The Government has also pledged to tackle the sale of weapons online, as part of Ronan's Law, which was introduced following the death of 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, who was murdered with a ninja sword bought online. This would require retailers to report bulk or suspicious knife orders to the police, put in place more stringent age-verification checks and impose significant fines on tech executives whose platforms fail to prevent illegal sales. Mother of Ronan, Pooja Kanda, said: 'Ronan was just 16 years old when his life was stolen by a 22-inch ninja sword that should never have been so easy to buy. Ronan's Law is not only a step towards justice for my son, but for every parent who wants to see their child come home safely. 'This law is about saving lives, closing dangerous loopholes, and holding those responsible to account. 'The Government's knife surrender scheme has been a sign of commitment to tackling the scourge of knife crime. While there is still much more to do, these are significant steps in the right direction.' The Home Office has also said a 'surrender van' will be deployed at this year's Notting Hill Carnival. Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said knife crime was 'spiralling out of control' and accused Labour of not wanting to talk about London and the 'utter failure of Sadiq Khan to tackle crime'. He said: 'Under Labour's Mayor, the capital has become Britain's knife crime capital, accounting for over 32% of all knife crime and over 45% of knife-point robberies in England. Stop and search has collapsed, yet Sadiq Khan spends more time pontificating than trying to make London safe. 'Labour are weak on crime, soft on criminals, and too scared to confront the reality on our streets. It's time for the Labour Government and Labour Mayor to wake up and get a grip, or get out of the way.'
