Elon Musk mocks Warren Buffett as boring, yet secretly sought his investment in Tesla, claims report

Time of India5 days ago
Elon Musk
is known for disrupting industries and speaking his mind, especially when it comes to traditional business icons like
Warren Buffett
. Over the years, Musk has repeatedly taken jabs at the legendary investor, calling his style of
capital allocation
'boring' and questioning the relevance of reading financial reports all day. But beneath the surface of these casual insults lies an unexpected twist: Musk once tried to get Buffett to invest in
Tesla
. It's a paradox that perfectly captures Musk's blend of blunt criticism, calculated strategy, and grudging admiration.
Elon Musk vs Warren Buffett: Brash disruptor meets the Oracle of Omaha
In 2020, Musk appeared on The
Joe Rogan Experience
and openly criticised Warren Buffett's approach to investing, saying, 'To be totally frank, I'm not his biggest fan.' He mocked Buffett's routine of reading company reports, describing it as 'super boring.' Musk even extended his critique to the broader financial and legal professions, saying the world needed fewer people in finance and more people 'making stuff.' That same year, in a New York Times interview, he doubled down, chuckling at Buffett's reputation as a 'kindly grandfather,' suggesting the image was exaggerated.
The theme continued in 2021 when Musk was named Time magazine's Person of the Year. Again, he repeated that Buffett's job 'doesn't sound fun,' but acknowledged that Buffett does 'a useful job for the economy' and is 'very skilled at it.' Despite these remarks, Musk's admiration for Buffett's financial acumen is hard to miss. In fact, Musk reportedly approached Buffett to invest in Tesla during its more financially uncertain days, an ironic move considering the public mockery.

Critique or compliment? The billionaire paradox
Musk's commentary might seem dismissive, but it also reveals his unique way of both challenging and respecting the establishment. He doesn't want Buffett's job, but he clearly respects the weight his endorsement carries. The attempt to win Buffett over as a Tesla investor shows Musk isn't above leveraging old-school credibility to boost new-age ventures. His attitude reflects a broader generational divide: Buffett's world of slow, calculated capital allocation versus Musk's fast-moving, risk-embracing innovation. In the end, Musk may not be Buffett's biggest fan, but he certainly knows the value of having one.

Musk says Samsung will produce Tesla's AI6 chip at US plant

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has said Samsung Electronics will manufacture the US electric vehicle maker's next-generation AI6 chip at its semiconductor plant in the state of Texas. Musk made the announcement on Sunday (U.S. time) on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate." He added that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which has just completed its design phase, will initially produce the AI5 chip in Taiwan, reports Yonhap news agency. Musk also said Samsung, which currently manufactures the AI4 chip, has agreed to allow Tesla to collaborate in efforts to maximise manufacturing efficiency. Tesla's AI6 chip is designed to be scalable -- small enough for use in humanoid robots and self-driving cars but powerful enough for artificial intelligence (AI) data centre. Samsung Electronics said on Monday it has secured a 22.8 trillion-won (US$16.4 billion) order to supply semiconductors to a major undisclosed customer. In a regulatory filing, the South Korean tech giant said it signed a foundry contract set to be completed by December 31, 2033. The contract accounts for 7.6 percent of the company's total revenue of 300.9 trillion won last year and marks the largest chip order ever won by Samsung Electronics. The deal is expected to give a much-needed boost to its foundry division, which has long struggled to catch up with global industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). In its earnings guideline released earlier this month, Samsung Electronics estimated an operating profit of 4.59 trillion won and sales of 74 trillion won for the second quarter. In particular, operating profit failed to meet market expectations, mainly due to the sluggish performance of the foundry and the System Large Scale Integration (LSI) divisions, according to the report.

China's Rare Earth Grip: Supply shock may hit Indian industry, exports and bank books

India's key industrial sectors ranging from transport equipment to electronics, rely significantly on rare earth imports, with China being the dominant supplier. A recent SBI analysis suggests that ongoing curbs on Chinese rare earth exports could influence domestic production, export competitiveness, and, to some extent, the financial exposure of banks linked to these industries. The top sectors impacted by China's ban include – Transport equipment, basic metals, machinery, construction and electrical and electronics, as per the analysis. Both domestic production and exports will be impacted. However, it should be kept in mind vulnerability is also a function of available inventory of rare earth and disruption is not immediate uniformly across sectors." ET Bureau According to SBI, the possible transmission mechanism to banks due to rare earth supply shock under aggravated scenario may include: • Elongation of working capital cycle due to accumulation of semi-processed inventory, idle capacity etc. Live Events • Volatility in demand due to output inoperability • Likely emergence of stress in both upstream and downstream sectors • Interlinkages from NBFC sector to banking sector • Export / trade uncertainties for committed yet unfulfilled obligations; both funds as also non-funds based (due to sudden restrictions). ET Bureau An analysis of India's trade data shows that the country's total imports of rare earth elements and related compounds have averaged around $33 million annually over the past four years, with FY25 imports at $31.9 million. Imports of magnets have been significantly higher, averaging $249 million during the same period and rising to $291 million in FY25. The study highlights that direct absorption of rare earths is concentrated in six core sectors, notably basic metals and electrical and optical equipment. In the case of magnets, usage is primarily concentrated in the automotive, electrical and electronics, and machinery sectors. A granular, sector-by-sector analysis—factoring in both direct rare earth inputs and the embodied rare earth content in magnets (assumed at 33% by weight)—was undertaken from two angles: final demand and export demand. The rare earth footprint, measured in kilograms, serves as an approximate indicator of how vulnerable sectoral output may be to disruptions in the supply of rare earths or related value-added materials. What makes Rare Earths so valuable? Rare earth is a subset of critical mineral with wide application in many emerging technologies. Critical minerals (including rare earth) form an important part of the modern production process because of their unique physical, chemical properties in reducing energy consumption, achieve miniaturization and thermal stability. During the last three decades, there has been an explosion in the applications of rare earth and their alloys in several technology devices. Because of their unique physical, chemical, magnetic, luminescent properties, these elements help to make many technological advantages such as reduced energy consumption, miniaturization, durability and thermal stability. In recent years, demand for rare earth is particularly on rise in energy efficient gadgets (green technology) which are faster, lighter, smaller and more efficient.
