'Liverpool do not require a massive rebuild this summer'

BBC News10-04-2025
Liverpool are in a very unique position, having such a large lead to a point where most people would accept that the league title is probably done. That is different to a lot of the title races in years gone by which may explain their dip in form, but it reminds us of just how difficult the Premier League is It also shows how much credit they deserve for this season because at times they did not play as well - as has been the case in recent weeks - but picked up so many points. They are trying to find their rhythm again but they're up against teams who themselves have much to play for - like Fulham this last weekend for example having the chance to play in Europe again. The last third of the season is the hardest because every team has some goal to play for.I don't think recent performances show Liverpool require a massive rebuild this summer.Trent Alexander-Arnold's probably going to be leaving, but I think it's just a case of deciding, figuring out who's going to be there next season, and then building a plan around that. You want your captain and most influential players to stay. Ultimately, it's the squad that's going to be lifting the Premier League title on the final day of the season. I think to say that squad requires a big rebuild would suggest that this season was a fluke, and I don't think that's been the case at all.I think they'll know the areas that they need to try to bolster and and I don't think it's that many.I don't think they're going to be looking at a completely different side next year with low expectations because as the season starts, if they have the majority of the same squad, I don't see why those players and managers would not believe that they can win the Premier League title again.Nedum Onuoha was speaking to BBC Sport's Nat Hayward

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta 'stole' £60m star from Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has accused Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta of sabotaging Liverpool's transfer deal for Martin Zubimendi. The Premier League champions tried to sign Zubimendi from Real Sociedad last summer but the Spanish midfielder ended up rejecting the move. Zubimendi finally completed a move to England earlier in the summer, joining Liverpool's rivals Arsenal for around £60m. Arsenal reportedly agreed a deal for the 26-year-old at the start of the year and Carragher believes it was Arteta who convinced Zubimendi to snub Liverpool and hold out for a move to the Emirates Stadium. 'I'm convinced now that Mikel Arteta definitely stole him from Liverpool,' Carragher said on the Stick to Football podcast. 'He had agreed to come to Liverpool. 'He said he was coming – and at the last minute he said, 'I don't want to come. I'll have another year [at Sociedad].' 'Mikel Arteta's from the Basque area. There's no doubt he's been into him and said, 'We're signing [Mikel] Merino this season, we'll come for you next season'. 'The deal was done about halfway through the season. Arteta definitely stopped [Liverpool's] deal. 'That's why Zubimendi didn't go to Liverpool. I think Arteta got into him. Listen, I'm not having a go at him, that's just management.' Arsenal fans have high hopes for Zubimendi, who made over 200 appearances for Real Sociedad and helped Spain win Euro 2024 last summer. Zubimendi is one of six signing Arteta has welcomed to the club this season along with Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristian Mosquera. While much of the focus has been on new Arsenal striker Gyokeres, signed from Sporting for £64m, Danny Murphy believes Zubimendi is an equally important addition. 'Gyokeres is a powerhouse and he is going to score a lot of goals, there is no doubt about that,' the former England midfielder told BBC Sport. More Trending 'But Zubimendi is just as important a signing because Thomas Partey was such an big player for them in midfield last season. 'With Jorginho going too, bringing in Christian Norgaard was a clever bit of business. 'He is a really clever footballer, who does his defensive work really well. They will be there or thereabouts again.' Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. Newcastle set to sign midfielder from Premier League rivals

Newcastle are set to sign Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey after agreeing a £40m fee for the player. The 24-year-old is expected to undergo a medical imminently in the North East. Ramsey's sale is crucial for Aston Villa to comply with UEFA financial fair play and profit and sustainability rules, as the fee will count as pure profit. Should the transfer be finalised quickly, Ramsey could potentially face his former club in the Premier League opener on Saturday. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is unlikely to benefit significantly from the transfer funds due to the club's financial constraints and a recent UEFA fine. Fee agreed for Jacob Ramsey between Aston Villa and Newcastle

Newcastle are poised to secure a significant transfer, with Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey set for a medical after a £40m fee was agreed, the PA news agency understands. The 24-year-old is due to travel to the North East imminently. This prospective sale is crucial for Villa, who are navigating a tightrope of UEFA financial fair play and profit and sustainability rules. Ramsey's departure, after 167 appearances for the club, will represent pure profit, a vital aspect given their pressing need to sell. Should the medical proceed without issue and personal terms be finalised within the next 24 hours, Ramsey could face his former club as early as Saturday lunchtime's Premier League opener at Villa Park. Despite the substantial fee, Villa manager Unai Emery is unlikely to see a significant portion of the proceeds. The club's spending remains under close scrutiny following a £9.5m UEFA fine for breaching regulations. Villa are reportedly keen to re-sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Asensio, who spent the second half of last season on loan. Ramsey's arrival at St James' Park offers a much-needed boost for Eddie Howe's side after what has been a challenging transfer window. While they have secured Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw, alongside a loan deal for Aaron Ramsdale, Newcastle missed out on Benjamin Sesko, who opted for Manchester United. The future of Sweden international Alexander Isak also remains unclear amid reports of his desire to join Liverpool.
