'Maa I am not a thief': 12-year- old dies by suicide after shamed for allegedly stealing chips packet from shop
KOLKATA: A 12-year-old boy died by suicide after being accused of stealing a packet of chips and forced to do sit-ups by a shopkeeper in Panskura, Paschim Medinipur district, PTI reported on Friday.
Krishendu Das, a Class 7 student, allegedly took a packet of chips from a shop at Gosaiber Bazar on Thursday evening after the shopkeeper, Subhankar Dikshit, was not present. Krishendu reportedly called out repeatedly, 'Uncle, I will buy chips,' but received no response and left the shop with the packet.
The shopkeeper returned soon after, chased Krishendu, slapped him, and made him do sit-ups in public, according to a complaint filed by the boy's family.
Police said an investigation is underway. Krishendu's mother was called to the scene, where she scolded and slapped him. The boy claimed he had picked up the packet from a pile near the shop and intended to pay for it later. He even apologized and offered to pay immediately, but the shopkeeper accused him of lying.
Feeling humiliated, Krishendu went home with his mother, locked himself in his room, and refused to come out. After some time, his mother and neighbors broke down the door and found him unconscious.
A note, believed to be written by Krishendu in Bengali, read, "Maa I am not a thief. I did not steal. Uncle (shopkeeper) was not around as I waited. While returning I spotted a kurkure packet lying on the road and picked it up. I love Kurkure."
Krishnendu said, "These are my final words before leaving. Please excuse me for this act". He was taken to Tamluk Hospital and admitted to ICU but died soon afterwards.
Further investigations are underway.

He mentioned that he recognised the couple, as he had offered to guide them down to Nongriat on May 22, but they had politely declined and chosen another guide instead. 6. The brother of Sonam who disappeared during her honeymoon in Meghalaya informed the police that their family suspects she may have been 'kidnapped'. 7. Meghalaya Director General of Police I Nongrang mentioned Special Investigation Team (SIT) sleuths arrested the accused from Madhya Pradesh's Indore, whereas Sonam was picked from Uttar Pradesh as she surrendered. She was found at Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. Following initial treatment at Sadar Hospital, she was taken to the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur, according to ADG Law and Order, UP, Amitabh Yash. 8. Among the three accused, one person was apprehended from Uttar Pradesh, while two others were arrested from Madhya Pradesh's Indore, the DGP said. Sonam allegedly hired the arrested men to kill her husband, Nongrang added. "The operation is still continuing in Madhya Pradesh to catch some more persons involved in the crime," she said. Earlier, Albert Pde, a tourist guide in Mawlakhiat, revealed that an Indore couple were spotted with three on May 23, the day they went missing, the report said. Albert mentioned that he saw the couple climbing over 3,000 steps with three men, heading from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat at around 10 a.m. on May 23. He said that the three men with the couple were speaking in Hindi, suggesting that they were not from the region. The Meghalaya police on Monday alleged that the wife of an Indore man – who was murdered in the state during their honeymoon – had planned the killing. Days before the discovery, a tourist guide gave a vital clue to the police as he said he had spotted the victim, Raja Raghuvanshi, walking with three men and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi. According to the tour guide in Meghalaya, Albert Pde, the couple – Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi – were accompanied by three male tourists on the day they went missing from Meghalaya's Sohra area on May 23. He made the revelations on Saturday, June 7. The four men were conversing in Hindi, but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English," he told PTI. Further, Pde also said that he offered to guide the couple to Nongriat on May 22, a day before they went missing. However, the couple declined his service and went with another guide named Bha Wansai. They spent the night at Shipara homestay and returned the next day without a guide, Pde said. "One accused from Uttar Pradesh and two more persons were held from Indore by Meghalaya Police SIT. The arrested accused have named some more persons. They revealed that the victim's wife had hired them," Meghalaya Director General of Police I Nongrang, told PTI.
