Najib betrayed public's trust, SRC International wants RM42mil back, says counsel
Counsel Kwan Will Sen, representing SRC International and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, in the RM42mil civil suit against Najib, stated that it has been ten years since the money ended up in Najib's personal accounts and now, the two companies want it back.
He made these remarks while delivering the opening statement on the first day of trial in the civil suit filed in May 2022 by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari against Najib (the sole defendant).
"Three courts namely the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court, have already found him (Najib) criminally guilty of these very acts beyond a reasonable doubt.
"Najib was the Finance Minister at the time and had full control over SRC International. He held key positions, including that of Advisor Emeritus. As such, no significant transaction occurred without his knowledge or consent," he said.
Kwan also stated that the evidence will prove that the RM42mil was transferred from SRC International and ultimately ended up in Najib's personal bank accounts. Of this sum, RM32mil was immediately transferred to two companies that had previously covered shortfalls in Najib's accounts.
"These transfers were made pursuant to instruction letters bearing his (Najib) personal signature. The remaining RM10mil was spent through personal cheques issued by Najib himself," he said.
"We say that the money trail is clear, the documentary evidence is overwhelming, and Najib's own sworn admissions are damning. We will prove our case under three complementary causes of action; knowing receipt, dishonest assistance, and misfeasance in public office.
"On any of these grounds, justice demands that these public funds be returned to their rightful owners - the Malaysian people," he insisted.
The court on Friday heard testimony of the first witness, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M), Ung Su Ling, 57, whose appointment was approved by Najib.
The hearing before Judge Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan will continue on Nov 6.
This lawsuit, filed in May 2022, accuses Najib of breach of fiduciary duties, knowing receipt of funds, dishonest assistance, tort of misfeasance and abuse of power in relation to the misappropriation of SRC International funds. - Bernama

Luxury properties thrive as affordability sinks
Picture an average Malaysian drowning in bills and rising costs, yet a simple glance at the Kuala Lumpur skyline reveals cranes gleaming hard at work, building brand-new, dazzling condominiums with million-ringgit price tags. Malaysia has a real estate paradox and it does not get more obvious than that. While an affordability crisis deepens for ordinary citizens, the high-end property sector continues to thrive. This contradiction raises questions about what drives such a phenomenon.

Rallies continue in Sabah to demand justice for Zara
The crowd at Lintasan Deasoka demanding justice for Zara. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 16): Rallies across Sabah continued to be held in remembrance of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. On Saturday evening, one such rally took place at Lintasan Deasoka here, with around 500 people in attendance despite continuous rain. Participants stood under umbrellas as they chanted support for Zara and her family, while others held placards demanding that schools be made safe spaces for all. Police guarded the perimeter to safeguard against any untoward incidents. Jaya speaking at the gathering. According to organiser Jaya Kumar, 47, from the Indian Civil Servant Retirees Organisation, the gathering was to demand justice for Zara and highlight the rising number of bullying incidents. Jaya said if it wasn't for the rakyat's voices, the case might have already been closed, expressing dismay over a recent report that an investigating officer in the case failed to follow Standard Operating Procedures. 'This issue does not involve race or religion, it involves the loss of a child's life. I have children. How can I trust to send them to school with the situation now? Strict action must be taken by the authorities, parents and schools over this bullying issue. I hope that not just in Sabah, but the whole Malaysia, we do not see a second Zara,' he said. Rajandran addressing the rally. Meanwhile, Dato Seri Rajandran, 66, said to be from the Kedah Royal Family Association, suggested that schools place a complaint box for reporting bullying incidents. He explained that such boxes would give both students and staff a safe channel to report problems or daily incidents without fear of reprisal. 'With these boxes, we can receive daily updates on what is happening in schools and detect incidents early. I came here not to complain to any party, but to fight for justice as Malaysians. A Malaysian's blood was spilled — let us try to prevent another,' he said.

MOF: Tax Break On Rentals To Boost Competitiveness, Avoid Overseas Shift
The Finance Ministry (MOF) clarified that the service tax exemption on ship and aircraft rentals was introduced to protect Malaysia's competitiveness and prevent capital flight. In a statement, MOF said imposing the tax risked pushing local ship and aircraft owners to register abroad, reducing Malaysia's share of economic and tourism-related activity. At the same time, it noted that neighbouring countries do not impose such levies, meaning Malaysian operators could lose out to foreign competitors without the exemption. 'This exemption is targeted at the aviation and maritime sectors, which are vital to the supply chain, tourism and the national economy. It does not apply to other rentals such as cars, buses or premises,' MOF said, while emphasising that the tax exemption was not done through any 'silent' move. The ministry highlighted that the policy was officially communicated through Service Tax Policy No 2/2025 (Amendment No. 1), uploaded to the MySST portal on July 24, 2025.
