Netflix is no stranger to controversy, often giving platforms to divisive public figures or airing docuseries endorsing fringe views, and its upcoming documentary movie Titan could prove one of its most talked-about films this year.
We'd already heard some hints about Titan, but Netflix has newly announced a release date for the movie, and provided more pointers as to what it'll be about. It'll release on Wednesday, June 11, one week shy of two years to the day that the event took place.
10+ upcoming Netflix documentaries to add to your watchlist right now
Titan or to give it its full name Titan: The Oceangate Disaster, is about the 2023 destruction of the Titan submersible, which was taking five people down to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean in order to sight-see around the wreck of the Titanic. It's very likely that you followed this closely when it took place, as we all did.
When it happened, public discourse was divided on the events. Some were horrified by the loss of human life and the anticlimactic rescue, with clues suggesting early on in the search for the sub that it could have survived.
But others were quick to point out that the participants of the trip were all multimillionaires who were spending loads of money on the trip, and that a simultaneous loss of a migrant boat with hundreds of people feared dead was getting far less media coverage.
Netflix doesn't seem to be hiding from the controversy swirling around the Titan sub — would it ever — and instead seems to be diving deep into it.
According to Netflix's blog Tudum, the 110-minute documentary movie will focus on Stockton Rush, the CEO of Titan owners OceanGate, who was one of the sub's five inhabitants. It'll look at his attempts to become a billionaire through his underwater adventure company.
Given the nature of the topic and how social media discussions went down two years ago, it's inevitable that Titan will reignite these conversations. So it's all but guaranteed to be a divisive documentary no matter what side of the debate it comes down on itself.
It'll likely be the most divisive documentary to come to Netflix for quite a while, too. That's because the streamer's doc slate is mainly taken up with Trainwreck, a one-movie-per-week series of docs that looks at events from the headlines and dives into them in greater detail.
Having looked at the line-up, none of these are nearly as divisive as the Titan submersible implosion. The only near contender could be the streamer's upcoming doc about the British Grenfell Tower fire, expected to debut at some point in 2025.
I've rounded up some of Netflix's biggest upcoming documentaries here, and you can find the current best Netflix documentaries here.

Taylor Swift Raves About Boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Movie ‘Happy Gilmore 2': ‘Absolute Must Watch'

Taylor Swift has a new favorite movie, and it just so happens to star one of her favorite people: Travis Kelce. On the day of the Netflix premiere of Happy Gilmore 2 — in which the Kansas City Chiefs tight end appears alongside Adam Sandler — the pop superstar posted her review of the film on her Instagram Story on Friday (July 25). Sharing the film's poster, she wrote that the project 'had me cackling and cheering the whole movie!' The 14-time Grammy winner added, 'Go watch it on @netflix as soon as humanly possible.' Serving as a sequel to the original Happy Gilmore in 1996, Happy Gilmore 2 reunites Sandler with Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller as they reprise their characters while also adding new faces such as Kelce and Bad Bunny. Just over a week before the new film's premiere, the Grown Ups star touched on bonding with the NFL star on set and praised Kelce's superstar girlfriend, telling Entertainment Tonight, 'Taylor's so damn nice to my family and has always been … and Travis is such a gentle, nice guy.' Swift's praise for Kelce's new acting venture is just the latest time she's showed support for her boyfriend's career, with the 14-time Grammy winner frequently cheering him on at Chiefs games throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons. She also backed him up at his Tight End University event this past June, surprising Kelce's guests with a performance of 'Shake It Off' one night. '[Taylor] just went out there without practicing, and it was pitch-perfect,' Kelce later gushed on his New Heights podcast. '[She] just killed it.' The Eras Tour headliner isn't the only half of Tayvis that's been active on Instagram lately. One day prior to Swift showing love to Happy Gilmore 2, Kelce shared a number of photos of himself and the singer, giving fans a rare look into their romance. Swift's younger brother, Austin, also appeared in a couple of the snaps, which appear to show him going on a fishing trip and hiking with his sister's boyfriend and Kelce's older brother, Jason. ‘Wednesday' S2: Who Is the Mystery Woman at the End of Part 1?

Wednesday season two part one has finally arrived on Netflix and while it has answered a lot of questions, such as who is Wednesday's stalker, it's also left us with some very pressing queries—namely, who is the mystery woman at the end of part one? During the fourth episode, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) uncovers a secret operation taking part in Willow Hill. It's called LOIS and was set up by one of the former teachers of Nevermore Academy and now run by his daughter Judi Spannegel (Heather Matarazzo). Wednesday, along with the ever reliable Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), head down the basement of Willow Hill, where they discover Judi has been keeping a number of Outcasts prisoners in order to conduct test on them and transfer their powers to Normies. Wednesday and Uncle Fester liberate the prisoners, and there's one woman who intrigues Wednesday and for whom she makes a special effort to escort out. Given the significance of these scenes it's likely this unknown woman is going to be a bigger characters in the next part of season two. But who is she? Here's all the theories we have so far. Throughout the season, Wednesday's Aunt Ophelia is mentioned a lot. She's the sister of Morticia and is a massive point of contention between Wednesday and her mother. As the season progresses we come to understand that Ophelia has been missing for the past 20 years and she shares a lot of similarities to Wednesday, including their shared psychic ability. Morticia frequently points out that just like her aunt, Wednesday is struggling to master her skills and Morticia is worried this could lead to the problems and breakdown that her sister faced. When the sisters were younger Ophelia pushed her psychic abilities too far and produced the same black tears Wednesday does and so her mother Hester (Joanna Lumley) sent her away to Willow Hill. But while the family assumes she is missing, could it be that she's actually been in the basement of Willow Hill all this time? There's a lot of clues to suggest so. Firstly, she's been missing for two decades. Maybe she hasn't been missing at all but in fact been kept prisoner, which is why she's never been seen or communicated with the family. We also know for sure that she was a patient at Willow Hill, with Uncle Fester also confessing to Wednesday Morticia had once asked him to break her out. However, he never did. Given how much emphasis the show has put on Aunt Ophelia as a character, the most likely explanation is she is the one who Wednesday finds and looks after at the end of season two part one. Another person some fans are theorizing the mystery woman is in fact Tyler's mother. During season one we learnt that Tyler (who is also a hyde) is the son of the Detective Galpin and Francoise Galpin, who was an outcast and a hyde. After giving birth to Tyler, Francoise went onto have postpartum depression which led to her hyde being released, and she was then locked up in Willow Hill. We're told that she then died in Willow Hill. However, now fans are theorizing that maybe she's more alive than previously thought. It's a very plausible theory given how much Detective Galpin was investigating LOIS. Perhaps he was suspicious of what happened to his wife all those years ago, and then when he got close to the truth that's why he was killed off by Judi and her crows. The series also puts a lot of emphasis on Tyler rejecting Miss Thornhill as a mother figure, with one of the final scenes between them being when Tyler says to her: 'You're not my mother, you're my master,' and maybe this is to open up the chance to reunite Tyler with his mother. There's also a small possibility that the mystery woman is neither of the characters, and is simply a red herring meant to throw the audience off. However, with everything being so intentionally thought out in Wednesday, we're doubtful she's a character who doesn't hold some significance to the overall plot. Wednesday season 2 part 1 is available on Netflix right now.

Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones Talk Screaming, Scary Dolls, and David Lynch in the Latest Episode of Off the Cuff

While the bond between Wednesday and Morticia Addams may be a bit knotty in Netflix's Wednesday—the second season of which premiered this week (on…Wednesday, in fact!)—the women who play them, Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones, could not be a more bewitching pair. In the latest installment of Off the Cuff, the affectionate (and utterly glamorous) co-stars swap stories about auditions gone wrong, contemplate their favorite monsters, and wonder aloud what an 'FYP' is, before plunging into a rapid-fire round that soon has their Vogue-issued cue cards flying hither and thither. Among our learnings: that the pair first met in Bucharest in 2021; that Zeta-Jones can yank a tablecloth from a table without upsetting the plates and silverware (a trick she learned while making No Reservations), though she's a bit rusty now; that Ortega would have loved to work with David Lynch (which tracks, doesn't it?); that Zeta-Jones hates rats—or, really, any 'things running with little tails'—but is utterly delighted by the concept of the Loch Ness Monster ('Nessie!'); and that Ortega has very, very strong feelings about Cabbage Patch Kids ('hideous')…among so many other delightful (and delightfully dark) bits and bobs.
