Renault Korea's rebranding gains momentum with Grand Koleos

Korea Herald19-03-2025

Renault Korea said Wednesday that its latest mid-size sport utility vehicle, the Grand Koleos, is expanding its presence as it drives up the carmaker's overall sales in Korea.
The Grand Koleos — the company's first new model in four years — made a strong debut at the 2024 Busan Mobility Show. In the first four months since its launch, over 22,000 were sold.
Renault Korea said this surge in demand contributed to an 80 percent year-over-year growth in sales last year, boosting both its domestic performance and Renault Group's global sales.
In February 2025, Renault Korea sold 4,881 vehicles in the domestic market, with the Grand Koleos accounting for 84 percent of those sales (4,016 units).
The Grand Koleos has been praised for its spacious interior, innovative technology, advanced safety features, and strong performance. With a 2,820 millimeter wheelbase — the longest in its class — it offers generous rear-seat legroom and a quiet, comfortable cabin, thanks to advanced Noise, Vibration and Harshness reduction technology.
Renault Korea emphasizes safety as a top priority, noting that 18 percent of the Grand Koleos' body is built with ultra-high-strength Hot Press Forming components. The SUV also features up to 31 advanced driver assistance and convenience features.
One of its standout innovations is the "openR" panoramic screen, which extends to the passenger side — a first for a domestic model. Additionally, buyers receive five years of unlimited in-car 5G data.
The Grand Koleos E-Tech Hybrid variant delivers 245 horsepower through a dual-motor system, providing best-in-class performance with an official combined fuel efficiency of 15.7 kilometers per liter. Meanwhile, the 2.0 liter turbocharged gasoline model produces 211 horsepower and achieves 11.1 km/L fuel efficiency.
Recognized for its outstanding features, the Grand Koleos has swept multiple industry awards, earning top SUV honors from three major organizations.
Meanwhile, Renault Korea plans to continue its brand transformation following its official rebranding in April 2024. As part of this shift, the company dropped its previous moniker, Renault Korea Motors, in favor of a sleeker identity, Renault Korea, and adopted Renault's original lozenge logo. The carmaker has also been revamping dealerships nationwide while launching modernized showrooms to enhance its premium image.

LG Innotek launches world's first 5G satellite communication vehicle module

LG Innotek said Wednesday it has developed the world's first third-generation 5G communication modules for vehicles that supports the 5G New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network, enabling high-speed data transmission, which is expected to accelerate the advancement of autonomous driving. The latest module supports 5G NR-NTN, a mobile communication network that operates on low Earth orbit satellites, allowing real-time transmission of large volumes of data. It serves as a key component for software-defined vehicles and autonomous driving. Existing 5G modules for vehicles have been limited by a narrow bandwidth of around 0.2 megahertz, making it difficult to transmit the large volumes of data required for autonomous and connected cars. In contrast, LG Innnotek's new module boasts a wider bandwidth of around 30 megahertz, allowing data to transfer hundreds of times faster while dramatically reducing latency to a few hundred milliseconds, the company explained. When equipped in a vehicle, the module enables fast, uninterrupted transmission and reception of large volumes of data, including voice, images and video, anytime and anywhere. This means cars can have seamless communication even in remote areas such as deserts or mountains or during natural disasters. In emergency situations, the module allows rapid transmission of distress signals and vehicle status information, helping the driver to be safely rescued. LG Innotek plans to mass produce the latest module by the first quarter of next year, with goal to expand its footprint in the global automotive connectivity market. The firm is currently promoting the product to carmakers in North America and Japan. 'Vehicle communication modules, along with automotive lighting, will be the core to LG Innotek's auto parts business,' said Yoo Byaeng-kuk, head of the automotive components business unit. 'We will continue to introduce innovative components that deliver differentiated customer value and grow this vehicle communication module business into a multitrillion-won business.'

Renault Korea advances EV safety with Fireman Access system

Renault Korea announced Tuesday that it is reinforcing its commitment to road safety by equipping its vehicles with advanced safety technologies, including the innovative fire response system, Fireman Access, as part of the French automaker's broader efforts to lead global automotive safety. Fireman Access, developed by Renault Group, is designed to drastically reduce the time and resources needed to suppress electric vehicle fires. The technology creates a dedicated channel in the battery casing sealed with an adhesive disk. When a fire occurs, water from a high-pressure hose breaks through the seal, allowing direct cooling of battery cells. This method can shorten fire suppression time from up to four hours to just 10 minutes, while reducing water usage by nearly 90 percent. The technology is being implemented across Renault's EV and hybrid models, including those produced by its brands Dacia and Mobilize. In a move to enhance industrywide safety, Renault has made the patent publicly available, encouraging other manufacturers to adopt the system. These efforts are part of Renault's 'Human First' program, launched in 2023 to prioritize human life and safety in all aspects of vehicle design and technology. In Korea, this philosophy is embodied in features like the QRescue code — a QR system integrated into vehicles such as the Grand Koleos to allow first responders to access structural data and rescue occupants more efficiently. With Fireman Access and QRescue, Renault Korea looks to be at the forefront of setting safety standards both domestically and worldwide.
