J&K's Biggest Terror Attack On Civilians In 2 Decades, Weeks After Hamas, JeM, LeT Leaders Seen Publicly In PoK

News1822-04-2025

Though Indian agencies have not established a Hamas link to the Pahalgam attack, it closely resembles the 7 October 2023 Hamas strike on Israel that led to all-out war
Precisely 75 days since senior Hamas leaders were seen in public at a high-profile rally and conference in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)—an event that also saw the top leadership from terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Lashkar-e-Mustafa (LeM)—Jammu and Kashmir witnessed its most lethal civilian-targeted terror attack in more than two decades.
The attack at Pahalgam left over two dozen people dead, including an Israeli and an Italian national. The official figure may also rise, as the government has yet to give details about the casualties.
The terrorists used the route from Poonch that is nearest to the site where the conference was conducted, sources added.
Though Indian central agencies have not established conclusive proof or a link of direct or indirect involvement of Hamas in the attack, it closely resembles the 7 October 2023 Hamas strike on Israel that led to all-out war.
The modus operandi, target selection, and coordination are uncannily similar, though the violence is at a different scale. The conference had already raised concerns among Indian central intelligence agencies, as they expected a 'give and take" treaty of manpower. Sources also said that agencies had inputs on the planning of an attack in J&K.
PoK conference
About 90-100 terrorists, mostly from foreign countries, were present at the 'Kashmir Solidarity and Hamas Operation Al-Aqsa Flood" on February 5 at Rawalakot, PoK, a senior government official said. According to him, the conference had been organised in order to spin a common tale of Pakistan and Palestine as well-knit united fronts against Israel and India.
Hamas leaders such as Dr Khalid Qaddoumi, Dr Naji Zaheer, Mufti Azam, and five others spoke to the assembly. They wore shawls with Pakistan, Palestine, and their organisation's flags printed on them. Talha Saif, the brother of India's most-wanted terrorist Masood Azhar, was also present among key members of the JeM and LeT.
An Israeli government official told News18 that intelligence hints that Hamas leaders have in the past made repeated trips to PoK, and Israel has been asking India to officially declare Hamas a terrorist group.
Attack parallels
On 7 October 2023, Hamas staged a synchronised attack on Israel with a huge rocket barrage against cities such as Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, and Jerusalem, followed by armed incursions into surrounding towns. Militants attacked civilians, set houses on fire, and engaged in mass killings, including the massacre of more than 260 individuals at a music festival near Re'im. Around 1,200 people were killed in the attack, including soldiers and cops.
In an equally ruthless manner, terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, attacked a tourist hub, firing at civilians after allegedly ascertaining their religious identities. With more than two dozen victims, this was the worst terror attack in the region since 2002. Authorities have certified that the attack was well planned and practised, leading to security alerts throughout J&K.

HC orders release of 18-year-old daughter of Bangladeshi national from detention

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday ordered the Mankhurd police to release the 18-year-old daughter of a Bangladeshi national who was detained by the Nirbhaya Cell of the police station for inquiry regarding his citizenship and was later deported to the neighbouring country. A vacation bench of justices Neela Gokhale and Firdosh P Pooniwalla ordered the police to release the teenager immediately, saying her detention was not necessary for the purpose of the inquiry. The court was hearing a petition filed by the 18-year-old girl and her two younger siblings aged 16 and 8 years, who contended that they were born in India and had all requisite documents to prove their Indian citizenship. According to their petition, their father, Dadamiya Khan, had been residing in India for over 37 years. He had married an Indian woman named Mariyam Khan and was working as a cab driver. While all three children were detained by Mankhurd police following a special drive to identify foreign nationals staying illegally in India, the two younger siblings were handed over to their mother after they filed the Habeas Corpus petition. The children's counsel, advocate Siddha Pamecha, submitted their birth certificates showing they had been born in India and said they could not have been detained by the police over their father's allegedly circumspect citizenship. Even Dadamiya Khan was an Indian citizen and had all identity documents like PAN card, ration card and voters' identity card issued by the Election Commission of India, the lawyer said. Advocate Manisha Jagtap, representing the central government, pointed out that in the inquiry conducted by police, Khan had conceded that he was Bangladeshi national and he had illegally entered India as there were no sources of livelihood in his country. While he had been deported, an inquiry was underway regarding his citizenship under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946 as well as the central government's order dated May 2, 2025, the lawyer said, explaining the grounds for which his 18-year-old daughter was detained. The judges, however, felt that it was not necessary for the police to keep the 18-year-old in custody and ordered her immediate release. The court restrained the girl and her two siblings from leaving the court's jurisdiction without prior permission and directed them to be available as and when called by the investigating officer.

June 4, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Assam talks

The month-long talks between the Centre and the Assam agitation leaders on resolving the vexed foreign nationals issue seem to have reached a crucial stage. Both Governor, Bhishma Narain Singh and Chief Minister, Hiteshwar Saikia are now in the capital to be available for consultations. However, according to informed sources, there are still some differences on the cut-off year as well as the question of disenfranchisement. Mob teargassed Police lobbed teargas shells in the ancient town of Patan when a violent mob stoned a police chowki there, while violence continued in the central parts of Gujarat. Arsonists set ablaze a post office and a policeman was injured in stone-pelting. Four people were arrested in this connection. Joint statement India and Sri Lanka have agreed to take early steps to defuse and cease the ethnic violence so that conditions are created for finding a durable political settlement acceptable to all concerned. In a joint press statement issued at the conclusion of the visit of the Sri Lankan President, J R Jayewardene, both sides have also agreed for speedy restoration of normalcy in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, conducive to the return of the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in India. Technology import Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's forthcoming visit to the US is likely to open new vistas of cooperation in the field of 'high technology', flow of investment in infrastructure sectors of the Indian economy and diversification of trade between the two 'the vibrant democracies'.
