Marriott CEO on summer travel demand: We haven't seen any softness
"Today, am I seeing any of the softness that you described? No, but ... we've got to be transparent," Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano told Yahoo Finance at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on Tuesday. "That could change given how short that booking window [is]."
He added that group bookings were the strongest segment in the first quarter, and the company has the most visibility into that business because rooms are typically reserved far in advance. Business and leisure travel, on the other hand, are more prone to change as the lead times for booking are usually three weeks.
Capuano said the international market remains an area of growth. The company is seeing double-digit RevPAR (revenue per available room) growth in Asia Pacific (excluding China). Meanwhile, southern Europe is projected to have strong leisure summer travel, and many markets in the Middle East remain strong despite conflicts.
However, Marriott's first quarter performance and outlook added some fuel to the fire on concerns that a slowing US economy was beginning to spill over to the hotel industry.
The purveyor of the Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott brands cut its closely watched RevPAR metric when it reported earnings in early May. It projected full-year RevPAR growth of 1.5% to 3.5%, compared to the 2% to 4% it forecast previously.

In the first quarter, global RevPAR rose 4% year over year, cooling from the 5% growth it clocked in Q4. RevPAR in the US and Canada rose over 3%, versus over 4% in the fourth quarter.
Marriott reiterated its full-year earnings per share (EPS) outlook of $9.82 to $10.19.
Over the past 30 days, Yahoo Finance data shows sell-side analysts have largely maintained their full-year EPS projection on Marriott at $10.08.
Marriott shares are down about 7% in the past month as economic concerns build. Hilton (HLT) and Hyatt (H) are down 3% and 4%, respectively.
"Economic indicators such as unemployment, business confidence and consumer confidence all reflect a stable outlook," lodging industry research firm STR wrote in a new note. "Slowing TSA screenings are a concern; however this may be a function of travelers shifting to car travel and slowing outbound international travel due to the falling U.S. dollar."
STR expects a slower summer season for the hotel industry, citing weakening booking trends already for July and August. The firm blames fewer blockbuster events compared to last year, such as the Olympics, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, and the EURO 2024.
But the economy and Trump administration policies look to be a headwind too.
"The falling U.S. dollar may slow the flood of Americans traveling overseas and U.S. immigration policies could possibly deter some foreign-born U.S. citizens, representing around 16% of the U.S. population, from traveling abroad," STR researchers wrote.

Marriott opens largest AC Hotel in North America
This story was originally published on Hotel Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Hotel Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: Marriott International opened the largest AC Hotel in North America in Arlington, Virginia, hospitality management firm HHM Hotels announced earlier this week. The 355-room AC Hotel Arlington National Landing opened after a multimillion-dollar transformation of the former Crystal City Marriott. The property offers an AD Kitchen & Lounge, a 4,000-square-foot fitness center and 8,800 square feet of meeting and event space. The AC Hotel Arlington National Landing follows other recently opened AC Hotels in Arizona, California and Georgia. The brand is one of several in Marriott's expanding lifestyle portfolio, which includes the recently acquired CitizenM. Dive Insight: The former Crystal City Marriott's lobby, meeting spaces, exterior facade and food and beverage were all updated in the hotel's revamp. The AC Hotel also now features an AC Library with nooks for lounging and 'European-inspired' design, according to HHM. The property is in Arlington's National Landing district, walking distance to the Washington, D.C., Metro and minutes by car from Reagan National Airport. "Our prime location to major transportation systems matched with our bold, new identity and state-of-the-art facilities is a welcome addition to the community for special events, meetings, celebratory occasions, and a thoughtfully designed home away from home,' said Ben Joseph, the hotel's general manager, in a statement. Marriott — like its competitors Hilton and Hyatt Hotels — is expanding its lifestyle portfolio. That expansion includes its $355 million acquisition of CitizenM, which was finalized this week. Philadelphia-based HHM Hotels created its luxury and lifestyle division in 2023. The firm announced plans to restructure its leadership team to boost 'scalable growth' earlier this month. Genesis G90s With Brush Guards And Lights Are The Coolest Way To Transport VIPs
From the indomitable tank of a Cadillac limo that our top government official rides in to the fleet of blacked-out American SUVs that swarm around it, the U.S. has an intimidating fleet of vehicles to ferry VIPs around in. I think, though, that Kuwait's new fleet of 47 Genesis G90s might be even cooler. Genesis' flagship sedan is already one of the most distinctive vehicles on sale today, but adding the chic-for-a-government-vehicle electric blue and yellow livery, brush guards and light bars makes them look downright rad. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, this new fleet of G90s will include 40 cars that will be used for official ceremonies and protocol operations and seven that will be used to transport high-ranking officials. Genesis says that all 47 of these G90s were custom-built to meet official specifications and design standards as approved by the ministry's General Traffic Department. Read more: These Are The Cars You Love Getting As Ubers And Lyfts Genesis Has Been A Favorite Of Kuwait For Years This isn't Genesis' first time with the honor of carrying Kuwait's government officials, in fact the G90 was selected as the official transportation vehicle for members of the National Assembly of Kuwait in 2021. The new G90s (maybe the G stands for Government in this case) will have the sedan's standard powertrain, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that produces 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Genesis Middle East and Africa CEO Omar Alszubaidi said, "We are honored by the Ministry of Interior's selection of the Genesis G90 for official ceremonial and protocol use in Kuwait.... We look forward to continuing to support Kuwait's leadership with premium experiences that embody the true essence of modern luxury." These G90s won't be transporting any baddies in the back seat, but whomever gets the privilege of parking their pampered posterior in the rear seat of one of these limo-lite luxury sedans will be treated to the utmost in comfort. And consider this an official petition to bring brush guards to more full-sized luxury sedans. They make the G90 look so mean, and I love it. Want more like this?
