
VFACTS April 2025: Australian new vehicle deliveries drop
April was a disappointing month for new car sales, with drops across every state and territory and for private, business and government sales.
A total of 90,614 new vehicles were delivered in April 2025, representing a drop of 6.8 per cent on the same month last year.
Hybrids – after months of double-digit year-on-year growth – finally hit a wall. A total of 14,288 were delivered, down 6.0 per cent on April 2024's tally.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) continued to record YoY growth with 2601 deliveries in April representing an upsurge of 95.4 per cent. However, the end of the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption from April 1 likely explained why overall PHEV deliveries slumped from 6932 deliveries in March.
Electric vehicle (EV) sales fell 3.0 per cent in April to 6010 deliveries, with an influx of affordable options – primarily from China – offset by a huge drop in Tesla deliveries.

Tesla and Polestar ceased sharing their figures for the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' monthly VFACTS report midway through last year.
They now report their figures to the Electric Vehicle Council, whose report is usually published one working day prior to the FCAI's.
Of course, even when these brands did report to the FCAI, the overall delivery tallies weren't 100 per cent accurate. That's because Mahindra has never reported in VFACTS, and it's now been joined by – at least for now – brands such as Cadillac, Deepal, Smart and Xpeng.

Toyota had a range of models that were down, including some of its hybrid-only vehicles like the Camry sedan (down 55 per cent YoY) and Corolla small car (down 20.8 per cent YoY).
The Ford brand was down 15.2 per cent thanks to drops for the Ranger ute and the related Everest SUV, while Mazda was down 10.0 per cent in part due to lower sales of its most affordable models, the Mazda 2 light car and CX-3 light SUV.
Compared to April 2024, almost every top 10 brand was down.
Exceptions included Hyundai, which was up 7.0 per cent on the back of strong Venue, Kona and Santa Fe SUV sales, as well as Nissan which was up 27.0 per cent thanks to increases for the X-Trail mid-size SUV, Navara ute and Patrol upper-large SUV.
Chinese brands generally had a good month, with seventh-placed GWM up 16.3 per cent despite drops for larger models like its Cannon ute and Tank 500 large SUV.

Chery posted the biggest year-over-year increase at 290.9 per cent, putting it in 14th place. Polestar also recorded a significant jump with deliveries up 102 per cent.
Meanwhile, the likes of Volvo, Skoda, KGM SsangYong and Peugeot all posted declines of more than 40 per cent year-over-year.
Tesla had them beat, however, with an alarming 75.9 per cent YoY drop.

However, the Toyota is still behind the Ford in terms of year-to-date figures, sitting at 15,120 units against 17,257 for the Ranger.
Ford did sell exactly one more Everest (2234) than Toyota did of its Prado (2233), though in the large SUV segment it's the Toyota substantially ahead in year-to-date deliveries (10,674 versus 7220).
Toyota still had Australia's best-selling SUV with the mid-size RAV4, posting 3808 deliveries, and the best-selling passenger car with the Corolla, notching 1660 deliveries.
There were some top-10 models from outside the Ford and Toyota brands, of course. The Kia Sportage took seventh with 1701 deliveries, with the Nissan X-Trail in ninth with 1615 and yet another medium SUV, the Mazda CX-5, in 10th with 1607. Micro cars: Kia Picanto (491), Fiat/Abarth 500 (28)

Australian Tesla owners seeking compensation as phantom braking leaves drivers 'completely terrified'
When Dominic Yin bought his Tesla two years ago he didn't think he'd be taken for "a scary ride". A few months after his purchase, he was driving on the highway between Sydney and Melbourne when the car suddenly braked for no apparent reason. He told 7.30 a truck was behind him at the time. "The truck driver behind me pressed (his) horn and (gave me the finger), and I pointed to the car: 'It's not me, it's the car'". The issue is widely known as phantom braking and Mr Yin says it has happened to him numerous times. Some Tesla drivers have reported phantom braking while their car is in autopilot mode, which according to Tesla, "enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane". It's not entirely autonomous driving, but you can take your foot off the accelerator while the car drives along at a set speed and slows down for other vehicles. Tesla advises drivers that they should keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times. The company also maintains autopilot is designed to make driving safer, but in the US, Tesla has been sued over several deadly crashes in which the system was enabled. The Elon Musk run company has reportedly settled some of these cases but not admitted to any wrongdoing, citing driver error. Last month Tesla shared a video on social media showing an apparent test drive of its semi-autonomous system on Melbourne's streets, and said not even hook turns were a problem. Following a US consumer lawsuit over phantom braking, about 10,000 Tesla drivers in Australia have registered their interest in a class action against the company. The case began in the Federal Court last month, claiming that Australian consumers were misled over phantom braking, battery range and self-driving capability. "The issues that have been reported to us are that vehicles can be driving along on the highway at 100 or 110kph and all of a sudden the brakes are applied suddenly and without reason," class action lawyer, Rebecca Jancauskas told 7.30. "Drivers have reported feeling completely terrified when their vehicles have braked suddenly and it has led in some cases to collisions. "We've had many reports of people who registered for this class action, telling us that they've been driving with their hands on the vehicle, fully alert, and these issues have occurred nonetheless." 7.30 invited Tesla Australia to respond to the claims but it did not reply. The federal infrastructure department is responsible for road safety and told 7.30 it had received only six reports from consumers about braking problems with Teslas over two years. Peter Khoury from the NRMA said Tesla drivers should raise their concerns if they are subject to any phantom braking. "If you are experiencing this occurring in your vehicle, go to the manufacturer immediately because this can be a safety risk if it is occurring," he said. "If you're not satisfied with what the manufacturer has told you or done, you're not powerless in Australia. There is the capacity to notify the Australian government." The Australian class action is seeking compensation for Tesla drivers, claiming they have lost resale value given the problems. Mr Yin said there's "no way" he would have bought his Tesla had he been made aware by Tesla about phantom braking. He wants a full refund or for Tesla to fix the problem. French Tesla customers sue over brand becoming 'extreme right'
Around 10 French clients with leases on Teslas are suing the US carmaker, run by Elon Musk, because they consider the vehicles to be "extreme-right" symbols, the law firm representing them said on Wednesday. They feel they suffered "direct and concrete" damage from the way Teslas are now associated with "Elon Musk's actions", the GKA law firm said. They are demanding the Paris commercial court order their lease contracts be terminated and legal costs reimbursed, it said in a statement, signed by lawyers Patrick Klugman and Ivan Terel. The lawsuit comes as Tesla sales in the European Union have almost halved since the beginning of the year, a slump attributed to Musk's political activities. Those activities include him -- until last week -- standing firmly with US President Donald Trump, and overseeing efforts to cut down US departments and agencies. He has also lent public support to Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, and came under criticism for making a repeated gesture with an out-thrust arm interpreted by many historians to be a Nazi salute. "Because of Elon Musk's actions... Tesla branded vehicles have become strong political symbols and now appear to be veritable extreme-right 'totems', to the dismay of those who acquired them with the sole aim of possessing an innovative and ecological vehicle," GKA said in a statement. The perception of the Teslas they leased "prevents them from fully enjoying their car", it said. Most of the leases run for four years, with an option at the end to buy the vehicle. Tesla cars in Europe and elsewhere have been targeted by vandals, with some drivers reporting they have been insulted for using what is sometimes called on social media a "swasti-car". Several owners have taken to putting stickers on their Teslas reading "I bought this before Elon went crazy". "The situation is both unexpected and impossible for French Tesla owners," Klugman told AFP. "Musk's political positions have interrupted enjoyment" of the vehicles, and "we believe that Mr Musk owes these buyers the peaceful possession of the thing sold", he said.
