In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said that India's position on the matter remains 'clear and consistent'
India on Thursday strongly reiterated its opposition to the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), especially any involvement of third countries in the project. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said that India's position on the matter remains 'clear and consistent."
The government was responding to questions in Parliament about the May 21 trilateral meeting held in Beijing between China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, where regional connectivity was reportedly discussed, including possible cooperation linked to the CPEC.
'The Government of India is aware of a China-Pakistan-Afghanistan meeting held in Beijing, China, on 21 May 2025. The government's position on CPEC is clear and consistent," Singh said.
Singh stated that the CPEC passes through parts of the Indian Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, which are under illegal occupation by Pakistan.
'Government has consistently protested to parties concerned over the inclusion of the so-called 'China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through parts of the Indian Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir under illegal occupation of Pakistan, as a flagship project of 'OBOR/BRI' and asked them to cease these activities," he added.
The minister stressed that India has always opposed the inclusion of these territories in international projects such as CPEC, which is promoted as a flagship component of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The minister further noted that India is fully aware of all developments, including international meetings involving countries participating in CPEC discussions, and continues to monitor them closely from the perspective of national security.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan's acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met in Beijing earlier this May.

'Let's not go below the belt': Wasim Akram warns after India avoid burning Pakistan Asia Cup question

The legendary Wasim Akram reacted on Wednesday to the ongoing backlash over the scheduled India versus Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, insisting that the "game must go on" regardless of whether the blockbuster encounter takes place. The two arch-rivals are slated to face each other on September 14 at the Dubai International Stadium in a Group A fixture. Wasim Akram had his say on the scheduled India vs Pakistan Asia Cup fixture Ever since the schedule was confirmed last month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has faced significant criticism for agreeing to play against Pakistan. The controversy was heightened by the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this April, which further strained the already fragile political situation between the two countries. At one point, speculation was rife that the Asia Cup could even be cancelled if India withdrew, before the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) ended the uncertainty with an official announcement in late July. The criticism intensified after the Yuvraj Singh-led India Champions side withdrew from facing Pakistan twice in the World Championship of Legends last month, including the semifinal. More recently, at a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, India captain Suryakumar Yadav was asked whether his team would participate in the September 14 clash. The Indian media manager swiftly intervened, instructing reporters to restrict questions to team selection. Speaking on the Stick With Cricket podcast, Akram urged calm, stressing the importance of keeping politics away from sport. "Asia Cup schedule is out, there is backlash. But we in Pakistan are calm. We will be fine whether we play or don't play. The game must go on," he said. "Politics apart, I am not a politician. They are patriotic about their country, we are patriotic about ours. Let's not go below the belt. Talk about the triumphs of your country; the same goes for Pakistan, and the same goes for India. It is easier said than done." Akram added that while he respected the sensitivities around the rivalry, he still hoped to see India and Pakistan contest at least one bilateral Test series in his lifetime. The two neighbours have not played a bilateral series since 2012. 'I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime.'

Indian benchmark shares rise for fifth straight session on IT, consumer gains

(Reuters) -India's equity benchmarks rose for a fifth straight session on Wednesday as tech stocks rallied ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium and as consumer shares gained on hopes of a demand boost from the proposed tax reforms. The Nifty 50 added 0.28% to 25,050.55, while the BSE Sensex rose 0.26% to 81,857.84. Both benchmarks have added about 2.3% and 2%, respectively, in five sessions. Optimism over the proposed goods and services tax (GST) reforms, easing India-China trade concerns, and S&P's upgrade of India's sovereign outlook have all buoyed market sentiment, said Gaurav Garg, analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk. On the day, nine out of 16 major sectors advanced. The broader small-cap and mid-cap indices rose 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. IT stocks, which earn a significant share of revenue from the U.S., climbed 2.7% ahead of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium on Aug. 21-23. Investors widely expect a 25-basis-point Fed rate cut next month, a move that is seen supporting U.S. growth and reviving client spending for Indian technology firms. "A dovish tone from Fed Chair Jerome Powell could provide a positive trigger for Nifty and offset negative sentiment surrounding tariff developments," said analysts led by Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Securities. Consumer shares rose 1.4%, taking their three-session gains to 3.7%, on expectations that lower GST rates will boost demand and earnings. Financials slipped 0.4%, limiting the benchmarks' advance. Gaming-linked firms Nazara Tech and Onmobile Global fell 12.9% and 3.4%, after Reuters reported India planned to ban online money-based games. Micro-irrigation stocks such as Jain Irrigation and Mahindra EPC climbed 2.4% and 17.8% on hopes of zero GST on farm equipment. Fertiliser makers Chambal Fertilisers, Rashtriya Chemicals and Paradeep Phosphates extended gains, jumping between 2.3% and 5.4%, on improved supply prospects from talks with China. Sula Vineyards gained 2.5% after CNBC-TV18 reported the winemaker is looking to enter the premium spirits market. Live Events The planning minister stressed that the future of CPEC "must be anchored in quality rather than quantity," emphasising that only carefully selected, high-impact projects should be advanced to ensure sustainability and institutional strengthening. The CPEC, which connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan 's Balochistan with China's Xinjiang province, is the flagship project under Beijing's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China has invested in various power projects and road networks in Pakistan under the USD 60 billion CPEC plan. However, the implementation of various projects had slowed last year following terror attacks on Chinese personnel working on the ventures. Iqbal also disclosed that during his recent visit to China, he had conveyed PM Sharif's invitation to President Xi to visit Islamabad in 2026 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China. Underscoring the need to expand Pakistan's trade and export footprint in China, the minister directed the authorities concerned to resolve visa processing delays on priority to facilitate genuine businesspersons. He also instructed the preparation of an outcome-focused plan to diversify exports, enhance industrial linkages, and maximise benefits from market access under CPEC. The minister also noted that with China importing goods worth over USD 2 trillion annually, Pakistan should strategically aim to capture at least USD 30-50 billion of this trade by building competitiveness and sectoral readiness, according to Dawn.
