Malay Secretariat politically motivated, KEB more effective
SHAH ALAM: The formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee is politically motivated, in contrast to the Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB), which actively advocates for Bumiputera rights, said UMNO Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
He said the MADANI Government-driven KEB has a focused and consistent plan to uplift the Bumiputera community as a whole.
'The rights of the Malays have been a long-standing focus for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), which consistently advocated for their interests, particularly in promoting the Bumiputera community welfare each year. This commitment is reflected in various initiatives, such as the KEB, which the government is implementing to uplift the Bumiputera community.
'We have been undertaking such initiatives for generations. It doesn't make sense for them to think about doing the same thing as they did yesterday,' he told reporters after attending the handing over letters of acceptance (SST) ceremony for projects aimed at addressing overcrowded schools in various states, here today.
Ahmad, the Deputy Works Minister, was commenting on the formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee, announced by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday.
He said the committee does not require public support, as it is exclusively for Malays and that the KEB plays a more effective role in advancing the Bumiputera community.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government has agreed to review and discuss the five per cent housing discount for first-time Indian Muslim homebuyers at the upcoming state executive council (exco) meeting. Penang new discount to boost housing sector gets called out
GEORGE TOWN: In response to concerns over the oversupply of non-affordable housing units, the Penang state government has approved measures to revitalise the property sector. State housing committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the decision was made during the state executive council meeting on Saturday (May 7) and the state planning committee meeting on Tuesday (June 3), following discussions with housing industry stakeholders. "According to the Penang Property Market Report for the fourth quarter of 2024 by the National Property Information Centre (NAPIC), 2,796 residential units are identified as overhang, involving various property types across the state," he said on Saturday (June 7). The state government encourages private developers to offer a 5% discount to first-time homebuyers among the Indian Muslim community for one year. The discount excludes Bumiputera quota units and does not affect existing housing policies. The provision of the discount is based on developers' social responsibility and does not involve financial support or subsidies from the state government. "This initiative aims to expand homeownership opportunities in the open market for groups with historically low participation rates without compromising the rights of other communities," he said. Sundarajoo added that all existing housing policies, including the Bumiputera quota and various incentives for first-time buyers, remain intact. The initiative is an addition to existing programmes designed to meet the state's housing needs. The measure also aims to stimulate the property sector, which has been affected by rising construction material and labour costs, in line with the state government's aspiration for balanced, sustainable, and inclusive development in Penang. Meanwhile, state MCA secretary Yeoh Chin Kah criticised the state government over the measure, questioning if it introduces a new form of racial quota. "Sundarajoo announced that from June 1 this year until May 31 next year, Indian Muslims will be eligible for a 5% discount on residential or commercial properties. "The people of Penang cannot accept this policy and condemn it for dividing races," he said. He questioned why the Penang government couldn't base its housing policy on economic status rather than race and religion and said that DAP is promoting a "Malaysian Malaysia" while introducing racial policies that divide society. "Don't low-income groups who are not Indian Muslims also need assistance? Shouldn't struggling families be treated equally and helped regardless of background," he said.

MCA berates repeated delays in e-invoicing roll-out after IRB exempts biz below RM500k annual revenue
THE Madani government is strongly urged to cease the repeated deferments of its e-invoicing exercise by openly acknowledging the current lack of readiness for implementation and to embark on a comprehensive review of the nation's long-term tax structure. This is because the series of repeated delays are unfair to businesses that have already invested significant time and resources in preparation for the exercise, according to MCA's Selangor Youth Chief Tan Jie Sen. On Thursday (June 5), the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) announced yet another delay in its implementation of the e-invoicing system which is originally scheduled to be enforced this year for companies with an annual turnover of RM1 mil. Following exemption granted to businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually, the e-invoicing implementation phase for taxpayers with annual income of RM1 mil up to RM5 mil is now postponed to Jan 1, 2026 while that of taxpayers with annual income or sales up to RM1 mil has been deferred to July 1, 2026. 'More critically, such indecisiveness undermines public and business confidence in government policy,' Tan who is also an MCA Youth central committee member pointed out in a statement. 'The postponements also reflect unresolved issues within the current e-Invoice framework and its support infrastructure. 'The Finance Ministry (MOF) and the IRB must be transparent about these shortcomings by providing a concrete and practical plan for improvement rather than resorting to indefinite delays.' In a related development, MCA also took a swipe at the recent announcement by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying that the government will soon expand the scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) via a gazette next week. 'This effectively amounts to a backdoor tax increase and lays bare the fiscal pressures facing the national treasury,' asserted Tan. 'Given the current state of strained public finances and rising fiscal burdens, the government must set aside political prejudices and seriously consider the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).' He added: 'Compared to the existing SST regime, GST offers a more structured, transparent and broad-based taxation model. It is also a more sustainable mechanism that can cushion the socioeconomic impact of subsidy removals in the future.' – June 7, 2025
