Malay Secretariat politically motivated, KEB more effective
SHAH ALAM: The formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee is politically motivated, in contrast to the Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB), which actively advocates for Bumiputera rights, said UMNO Supreme Council Member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said the MADANI Government-driven KEB has a focused and consistent plan to uplift the Bumiputera community as a whole. 'The rights of the Malays have been a long-standing focus for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), which consistently advocated for their interests, particularly in promoting the Bumiputera community welfare each year. This commitment is reflected in various initiatives, such as the KEB, which the government is implementing to uplift the Bumiputera community. 'We have been undertaking such initiatives for generations. It doesn't make sense for them to think about doing the same thing as they did yesterday,' he told reporters after attending the handing over letters of acceptance (SST) ceremony for projects aimed at addressing overcrowded schools in various states, here today. Ahmad, the Deputy Works Minister, was commenting on the formation of the Malay Secretariat Committee, announced by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday. He said the committee does not require public support, as it is exclusively for Malays and that the KEB plays a more effective role in advancing the Bumiputera community.

Bumiputera economic plan yet to succeed, says Zahid
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is disappointed that the Bumiputera Economic Congress 2024 policies are yet to yield tangible outcomes, particularly in strengthening bumiputera's economic standing. KEB: Govt urged to draft act to strengthen TVET ecosystem
PUTRAJAYA: The government has been urged to draft an act to streamline and strengthen the country's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the proposal was among the key recommendations presented during today's retreat to mark the first anniversary of the Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB). He said the proposed new act would coordinate all 12 ministries involved in implementing the country's TVET agenda, allowing it to become the new national education ecosystem. Ahmad Zahid said the retreat also wanted to upgrade the National TVET Council to a commission that can bolster the coordination of the TVET ecosystem. 'This commission would not be a new entity requiring additional civil servants or large allocations, but would instead coordinate and optimise existing functions in a more focused manner,' he said. In 2021, the National TVET Council was established to enhance coordination of the country's TVET ecosystem and drive progress in the sector, which has been elevated as a national agenda. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said the KEB's head of the Education Reform and Human Capital Cluster, Prof Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali, has been appointed to lead the Bumiputera Economic Data Centre and Dashboard. He said the initiative will be placed under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy through the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU). When asked about the government's efforts to ensure TVET graduates receive decent wages, Ahmad Zahid said the government remains committed to securing premium salaries of between RM3,500 and RM5,000 for TVET graduates, particularly for holders of the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Levels 3 to 5, through ongoing engagement with industry players. 'We advocate for premium salaries for TVET graduates; we do not impose on companies to pay these wages but engage with the industry to encourage them. 'We (the government) not only have memoranda of understanding but also memoranda of agreement with the industry,' he said. He was commenting on a study conducted by the Malaysia Labour Market Insight Series, which reported that over 65 per cent of degree holders in the country earn a monthly salary below RM3,000 — an amount considered just enough to get by, leaving little room for savings, investment, or move up the social economic ladder.

Amendments to Aboriginal Peoples Act expected in Parliament this year, says Ahmad Zahid
PUTRAJAYA: Amendments to the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 (Act 134) are expected to be tabled in Parliament later this year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says. He said engagement sessions on the proposed amendments have already been conducted, involving a wide range of stakeholders, including the Orang Asli community and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). "The struggle of the Orang Asli is not just something to be fulfilled, but something that must be deeply understood. "We believe the younger generation among the Orang Asli, particularly those who have pursued higher education and earned doctorates, must be empowered and given expanded opportunities," he told reporters after attending a retreat marking one year of the Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB) here on Friday (May 23). Earlier in his speech, Ahmad Zahid stressed the importance of equalising economic opportunities for Bumiputera across the nation, including in Sabah and Sarawak, to avoid significant development disparities. "We must level the playing field for Bumiputera across the board, not only in Peninsular Malaysia, but especially in Sabah and Sarawak," he said. He also said that efforts to uplift the Bumiputera economy should not be viewed as marginalising other communities. "This is a fundamental principle. We do not need to be apologetic, nor should we feel guilty for championing these causes. We are not claiming special treatment, but rather, we are implementing rights that are enshrined in the Federal Constitution," he said. Ahmad Zahid also lauded Sarawak's early achievements in advancing the Bumiputera empowerment agenda within the state, noting that its customised policies for local Bumiputera should serve as a model for other states. "It is crucial that we learn from this early success and refine our strategies to ensure that no Bumiputera is left behind in the national development agenda," he said. - Bernama
