
Minister: DigitalNEXUS programme signifies Sarawak's digital innovation leadership vision
KUCHING (July 2): The inaugural Digital Technology Nexus (DigitalNEXUS) highlights Sarawak's vision of becoming a regional leader in digital innovation.
Introduced by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), the two-day programme at the Hilton Hotel here aims to foster knowledge-sharing, collaboration and innovation in digital technology.
It brings together academics, students, industry players and also those representing government agencies to explore the emerging technological trends including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, the metaverse, Internet of Things (IoT), and 'Big Data' analytics.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, in his keynote address for the opening ceremony yesterday, said digital transformation remained a key pillar of the state's economic and social development, in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.
In this regard, he underscored the government's continued investment in digital infrastructure and AI development, including the rollout of hyperscale data centres, rural connectivity through Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunications (SMART) towers and Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN), as well as digital skills programmes aimed at narrowing the urban-rural divide.
'Partnerships between academia, industry and government, such as what we see here at DigitalNEXUS, are crucial towards achieving that goal,' said Julaihi in his speech, which was read out by the ministry's deputy permanent secretary Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shabab.
Meanwhile, in his remarks, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Ahmad Hata Rasit described the programme as 'timely and necessary, given the accelerating pace of digital transformation'.
'We are now at a pivotal moment in history.
'The speed of digital transformation is not just fast; it is accelerating at an exponential pace.
'Universities are not just consumers of technology; we are creators, educators, and incubators of ideas that will drive the next wave of innovation.'
Ahmad Hata also reaffirmed Unimas' commitment of integrating digital literacy across its curriculum, investing in cutting-edge research and cultivating a culture meant to empower students and academics to lead in the digital age.
'DigitalNEXUS is a testament to that commitment,' he added.
'Let us use this event to think boldly, challenge the status quo, and collectively imagine a future where technology serves humanity in the most impactful ways possible.'
The opening day yesterday featured thought leaders such as Google for Education (Malaysia and Brunei) country head Danial Azizan Abdullah Henry; Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) head of digital tech ecosystem Victor Lo, Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) expert Simon Tiong, CyberSecurity Malaysia chief technology and chief information security officer Wan Roshaimi Wan Abdullah, Patentsworth International founder and chief executive officerIrfan Awang, and also Prof Anna Grosman of Loughborough University London.
The event was organised in collaboration with industry partners, and federal and state agencies and supported by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), with key partners including the National Digital Department, SMA, SAINS, Google for Education, CelcomDigi, CyberSecurity Malaysia, Patentsworth International, Oceanus Media Global (Singapore), Intelli Technologies (Vietnam), Insight Analytics (Vietnam), Forever Young Society, Emma Industries, Pay & Go, Genesis Circle Sdn Bhd, and Global Telecom.

Geespace Adds 11 Satellites To GEESATCOM For Global IoT Expansion
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Geespace, a Chinese commercial aerospace company, has announced the completion of the fourth orbital deployment of GEESATCOM, known as the Geely Constellation, launching 11 satellites from waters off Rizhao, Shandong Province, aboard a single rocket. According to a statement, the constellation has grown from 30 to 41 satellites in a 600-kilometre orbit and is expected to reach 64 satellites within two months, enabling seamless real-time global data coverage, excluding the polars. The GEESATCOM, which is independently developed and operated by Geespace, enables satellite Internet of Things (IoT) testing and inter-satellite communications for applications such as emergency communications, transportation and logistics, public infrastructure, and animal husbandry.

Sarawak seeks strategic collaboration with Japan's NEC to accelerate PCDS 2030, digital economy blueprint

KUCHING (Aug 13): Sarawak is seeking strategic collaboration with Japan's NEC Corporation to accelerate its Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 (SDE 2030), said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan He said the strategic collaboration will focus particularly on the fields of digital government, aviation, and cybersecurity. He reiterated that the Sarawak government is committed to building a resilient, inclusive and innovation-led economy anchored on renewable resources, environmental sustainability and technology. 'Our vision is to build an economy supported by clean energy, advanced digital infrastructure and high-skilled talent,' he said in a statement following a meeting at NEC Super Tower in Tokyo, Japan yesterday. He added that partnerships with global technology leaders such as NEC would help Sarawak achieve its development goals, bringing benefits through job creation, technology transfer and economic spin-offs. Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, stressed the importance of public-private partnerships and targeted investments in areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber security, integrated circuit design and digital services. 'Our journey towards a developed and sustainable Sarawak by 2030 is a shared opportunity. With NEC's expertise and our vision, we can create lasting value for investors, communities and the environment,' he said. He also met with US-based First Ammonia, which is collaborating with Danish technology leader Topsoe, to discuss plans for a next-generation green ammonia production facility in the state. The proposed facility would support the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap. Awang Tengah said the meetings were part of the state's ongoing efforts to attract high-value investments aligned with its sustainable development goals. He welcomed the investment interests, stressing the importance of ensuring such projects create mutual benefits for both Japan and Sarawak. He requested that the proposed investment should also create win-win situation for both Japan and Sarawak such as delivering lasting value through job creation, technology transfer, skills development, and economic spin-offs that will benefit local suppliers, contractors, and communities.
