ESPN Names Last Season's Luckiest College Football Team
A key factor within college football that probably isn't talked enough is how injuries can make or break a season.
ESPN's Bill Connelly attempted to quantify how injuries impacted teams during the 2024 season, and a couple of things standout from those findings.

Uncertainties are prevalent on the injury front in college sports. Often times, head coaches elect to keep the status of some players behind closed doors, and the information that does pass through is largely inconsistent.
Given the variability, Connelly focused on starting lineups to gage "lineup consistency."
The two factors used include: a) the number of players who either started every game or started all but one for a given team, and b) the number of players who started only one or two games.
Connelly's resulting list gives a look at which teams were lucky – in terms of injuries – and those whose starting lineups were ultimately decimated by season's end.

By those metrics, the luckiest team in college football last season was Penn State, which posted a program-record 13 wins and the first College Football Playoff berth in school history.

Head coach James Franklin and Co. came one game shy – a 30-27 loss to Notre Dame in the semifinals – from playing for a national championship.
The Indiana Hoosiers sat second in lineup consistency, and much like Penn State, thrived. First-year head coach Curt Cignetti led the program to a school-record 11 wins and the Hoosiers' first playoff appearance.
Three more playoff teams made the top 10, including Texas (No. 4), Tennessee (No. 6) and Oregon (tied 7th). National champion Ohio State tied for 28th.

On the flip side, the unluckiest major programs on the injury front were Florida (132nd), Oklahoma (tied 128th), Arkansas (tied 115th), Florida State (tied 110th) and LSU (101st).
Georgia, which infamously lost starting quarterback Carson Beck in the SEC championship win, came in at No. 99. Head coach Kirby Smart's Bulldogs are the only playoff team that ranked beyond 44th in lineup consistency.

Bryson DeChambeau returns to defend U.S. Open title as golf's YouTube king
Bryson DeChambeau returns to defend U.S. Open title as golf's YouTube king OAKMONT, Pa. — Bryson DeChambeau returns to the 2025 U.S. Open as the defending champion and golf's YouTube king, at least among the pro ranks. From his 2 million YouTube fans watching him try to "Break 50" with the likes of Donald Trump, various influencers and athletes to joining Johnson Wagner as he tried to reproduce his remarkable bunker shot at 18 at Pinehurst No. 2 during Golf Channel's "Live From," people love DeChambeau's content creation. The latest example was on display at Oakmont, site of this week's 125th U.S. Open, when DeChambeau showed up for a practice round on May 31 and filmed every shot. It was riveting stuff that no other player had done before. 'He's done a heck of a job using social media channels to connect with viewers, connect with golfers, and show his true personality because I think he probably didn't do a great job of that early on in his career,' NBC's Kevin Kisner said. ESPN's Scott Van Pelt took his analysis of DeChambeau's reboot as a YouTube star – he's got nearly 3 million Instagram followers and another 2 million on TikTok, too – one step further. 'I think he's now kind of figured out where he wants to be. He's almost reinvented himself in some ways,' he said. 'He's grown as a human, it seems to me. Last year he came and sat down in the Butler Cabin with me on Thursday and Friday, and he's been sort of this — he's played very different characters in a movie. It's almost like he's been many different versions of himself. 'And when he sat and visited with me last year, I just remarked to a number of people, he just seems like a different guy. He seems more at ease with himself. I don't know if it's the tour he plays, I don't know if it's just part of growing up, which is part of all of our lives, but he seemed comfortable, entirely comfortable with himself.' DeChambeau, 31, finally is becoming comfortable in his own skin, and YouTube has helped him let his guard down, he said, 'showing the fans a side of me that was locked up for so long.' 'What's funny is as much as my guard has been let down, I feel like I'm more strategic in how I deliver things and how I give perspective on things. Before, I was pretty up front and would just say things the way I wanted to whenever I wanted to,' he explained. 'Now it's more strategic in the way I do it and deliver it because I think there's a lot of good that can come from that.' DeChambeau has said he's taken a page out of the playbook of MrBeast, whose viral content are the most-watched videos on YouTube. Asked whether any of his peers have turned to him for advice on how to launch a YouTube channel, DeChambeau highlighted Phil Mickelson. Lefty said he'd always seen what he called the playful, fun, intelligent and interesting side of DeChambeau. 'He's able to showcase that and not have who he is be filtered by a middle person,' Mickelson said. 'He controls what content he puts out there and what he wants to shoot and so forth. So his personality comes out. It's been remarkable to see the evolution of it and the way the public has responded to him because he's always been like that. It just hasn't been able to be noticed, I guess, properly.' In discussing the tips he has passed along to Mickelson, DeChambeau said he reads the comments section and tries to give the people what they want. 'We've grown our channel to over 2 million followers now and couldn't be more thankful, and it's literally by listening to the comments section, by looking at the comments and seeing what they want,' he said. Major champion. Long driver. YouTube star. A case could be made that the latter has become what drives DeChambeau. 'It's a new space. I'm learning how to become a little bit more entertaining,' he said. 'It's not just golf, golf, golf, trying to win every really what gets me up in the morning and gives me a lot of passion for this game."

Jesus Pinedo vows to 'beat up' Gabriel Braga in 2025 PFL World Tournament 5 trilogy bout
Jesus Pinedo vows to 'beat up' Gabriel Braga in 2025 PFL World Tournament 5 trilogy bout Jesus Pinedo plans to leave no doubt who is the better man in his series with Gabriel Braga when they meet for a third and potentially final time Thursday at 2025 PFL World Tournament 5. When the pair first met in April 2023, it was Braga (16-2) who left with a debatable split decision win. They rematched a few months later in November 2023, with Pinedo (24-6-1) scoring a decisive third-round TKO finish. Now the rubber match is here, and it serves as a featherweight tournament semifinal at Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. (ESPN, ESPN+). Pinedo said he knows Braga has evolved since their previous encounter more than 18 months ago. He has too, though, and when he already thinks he should be up 2-0 in head-to-head matchups, that's a good feeling. "Of course I've improved, but I also realize that Gabriel has improved," Pinedo told MMA Junkie. "But it doesn't matter. I have a family to look after, my career to look after and it's not going to make a difference. I'm going to beat him up in the third fight. "I'm not all about sending messages, I'm just about getting the job done on June 12. That's kind of my style." Pinedo, 28, opened his 2025 tournament run in April with a first-round TKO of Adam Borics. On the same card, Braga, 27, finished Frederik Dupras with a first-round submission to advance in his quarterfinal. The pair concluded the event with an in-cage faceoff to promote the trilogy, and it was there that Pinedo realized his opponent needs to try to use mind games, while he's perfectly comfortable. "He was just saying the same things over and over (in the faceoff) and not really getting to anything," Pinedo said. "Either way, I respect him. I could make out kind of what he was saying, but it wasn't anything that was too vicious."

Texas Offers No. 1 QB Recruit in 2027 Class
Texas Offers No. 1 QB Recruit in 2027 Class originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is known as one of the best offensive minds in football. Many know Sarkisian as an excellent play caller, but he's also one of the top quarterback developers at the college level. Advertisement The Longhorns landed the nation's No. 1 overall recruit in quarterback Arch Manning from the 2023 recruiting class in large part due to Sarkisian's ability to develop. Quinn Ewers, Texas' starting quarterback for the last three seasons, also chose to attend Texas for the same reason. Since the hiring of Sarkisian, Texas has now become a popular destination for the top quarterback recruits in the country. That doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon as Sarkisian has offered and/or hosted some of the top signal-callers in the 2026 and 2027 classes recently. On Thursday, five-star quarterback Kavian Bryant announced via social media that he received an offer from Texas. Bryant is ranked the No. 1 quarterback in the nation for the 2027 recruiting class, according to On3. Bryant threw for 2,718 yards, 34 touchdowns, and three interceptions as a sophomore for Westwood High School (Palestine, TX) last season. He also recorded 856 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Advertisement His father, Kadrian Bryant, was a former Division 1 basketball player at Mississippi Valley State. Bryant is a multi-sport athlete that also excels on the basketball court and is receiving significant offers for each sport. The 6-foot-1 dual-threat quarterback has already racked up offers from Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oregon, Florida State and Auburn among others. Texas will hope to get Bryant on campus for several visits over the next year.
