Pivetta strikes out 10 in combined 4-hitter as the Padres beat the Giants 5-1

Yahoo20 hours ago
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta allowed a leadoff homer by Jung Hoo Lee and then settled down to tie his season high with 10 strikeouts in six innings and lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-1 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.
The Padres snapped a four-game losing streak and remained two games behind the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Lee homered to right-center on Pivetta's second pitch. It was his second career leadoff shot and sixth homer of the season. Pivetta (13-4) walked two batters that inning but allowed only three more baserunners, on two hits and a hit batter. He combined on a four-hitter with All-Star relievers Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez.
Pivetta beat the Giants in consecutive starts, with his most recent outing being an 11-1 win at San Francisco on Aug. 13 during a three-game sweep that helped the Padres take a one-game lead over the Dodgers. The Padres were then swept in a weekend series at Dodger Stadium.
The Padres tied it in the bottom of the first when leadoff batter Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on shortstop Christian Koss' throwing error, advanced on Luis Arraez's double and scored on Manny Machado's ground out.
The Padres went ahead 3-1 in the fourth when Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-3) had control issues, hitting two batters with pitches to load the bases and then allowing Jose Iglesias' single. Spencer Bivens came on and got a force out before walking Tatis to bring in another run.
Key moment
Pivetta clenched his fists and hollered as he walked off the mound after striking out his final batter to end the sixth.
Key stat
Pivetta reached double digits in strikeouts for the 20th time in his career.
Up next
Giants RHP Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45) and Padres LHP JP Sears (7-10, 5.12 ERA) are scheduled to start Wednesday night.

Dalton Rosta responds to Fabian Edwards' PED accusations: 'Blame his sh*t-ass genetics'

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Dalton Rosta finds Fabian Edwards' PED claims amusing. Rosta (11-1) takes on Edwards (15-4) in the middleweight tournament finals Thursday at 2025 PFL World Tournament 10 from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Edwards called Rosta a "juicehead wrestler," but the American Top Team fighter says he's been drug tested an unusual number of times throughout his career and never tested positive. "Everybody thinks I'm on steroids," Rosta told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Tuesday. "Like I said, I don't even f*cking lift weights. I see videos of this guy lifting weights all the time. If I'm a body builder, and I take steroids because I look like this, and I don't lift weights, and he's lifting weights, and he looks like that? I just blame his sh*t-ass genetics or sh*t-ass work ethic. I've never taken a steroid a day in my life, and USADA can attest to that. They've been drug testing the hell out of me. "I went to South Africa for the PFL card down there, as soon as I land, I'm getting drug tested. I just got drug tested a week before that, and they drug test me before and after every fight. I've been drug tested by every commission too before USADA was around whenever I was with Bellator. Mike Mazzulli seems to love to drug test me because every time I fight in Connecticut or somewhere he's commissioning, I get drug tested. It's not random at this point. I don't want to make allegations like that, but at least it doesn't seem like it. I've never failed a drug test, and I think there's a reason why." Rosta then went off on former two-time title challenger Edwards, and plans on crushing his championship dreams. "This guy, he's a gatekeeper," Rosta said. "I told him before, I said to him, 'How does it feel in July to watch two men that beat the sh*t out of you – Johnny Eblen twice and Costello van Steenis once, fight for a title that you'll never touch?' Then I told him, 'I'll do you another favor, Thursday night I'll beat you, and then at the end of the year, you get to watch the same thing over again.' Two guys that beat you fight for a belt you're never going to f*cking touch." This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Dalton Rosta responds to 'gatekeeper' Fabian Edwards' PED accusations
