uMhlathuze leaders summoned to Empangeni public meeting over unresolved service delivery issues
The upcoming meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 4 June at 6pm, to be held at the Empangeni SME One Stop Shop at 44 Turnbull Street, has been arranged by Cllr Andre de Lange following a heated meeting with over 80 fuming residents on 15 May.
Many expressed outrage over long-standing, unresolved issues, calling for the mayor and city manager to answer.
'At every meeting, the same problems are discussed, the list gets longer and the problems aren't resolved. What are we paying rates for?' asked Renzo Perini, who has lived in the town since 1950.
He said how Union Street has become a urinal and that he has to remove faeces from his place of work.
'We keep on paying, but there's no efficiency, no productivity. Now the management must be taken to task,' he said.
'We need all the responsible people who have the authority, to come and respond to us,' said Sboniso Xulu.
'We need a management plan,' urged Adri Mansvelder.
Some of the complaints include:
· Persistent electricity outages and water cuts, often patched up instead of long-term fixes
· Municipal contractors need to be properly trained, particularly with water pipe fixes and electricity problems at main substations
· Potholes and faded road markings
· Lack of traffic officers to manage violations such as drivers racing down Paul Avenue
· Vagrants digging in bins
· Lack of service delivery: overgrown areas and uncut grass (with cutting collection routinely delayed), broken glass and litter in public areas
· Old Empangeni graveyard needs to be fenced properly
· Construction work lagging on Commercial Road outside Empangeni Library
· Better service delivery in Richards Bay compared to Empangeni
· Public drinking rampant and by-laws ignored, with a call for placing signage banning alcohol use in public areas
· Natural heritage destroyed by residents cutting down old trees (some 100 years old) on pavements
· Rampant crime
· Lack of accountability: no follow-up from prior complaints

Tristan Tate defends Dricus against 'racist' comments
Tristan Tate – the brother of Andrew Tate – has defended Dricus du Plessis against critics who labelled him a 'racist'. Like the former UFC Middleweight World Champion, Tristan is known for his outspoken views on farm killings, 'white genocide,' and his endorsement of US President Donald Trump. Tristan, like Andrew, is also a former professional kickboxer. On his X account, Tristan Tate defended Dricus du Plessis against his critics. Tagging the former UFC Middleweight World Champion, Tristan posted: 'The hate @dricusduplessis is getting from people is totally unjustified.' He added, 'Chin up, champ, ignore the noise'. Tristan previously defended Dricus after fellow UFC fighter Israel 'Izzy' Adesanya claimed that the South African was 'not African'. He posted: 'Saying @dricusduplessis isn't African because he's white is super racist. 'He's African and so is Elon, do none of you know basic history?'. On X, many South Africans have accused Dricus of being a 'racist' after he publicly praised US President Donald Trump, who accused South Africa of promoting a 'white genocide'. Earlier this year, the 31-year-old said of the newly re-elected statesman: 'He is amazing, and I've had the privilege of meeting him. 'He said good changes are coming. He's holding many people and countries accountable for everything, and it's amazing to see'. Dricus also gave a 'big shout out to fellow South African Elon Musk for also doing the right thing.' Dricus du Plessis has praised Donald Trump and Elon Musk for speaking out about South Africa. Images via Instagram: @ufc Dricus – who has been vocal about farm killings – also infamously criticised South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Speaking to US interviewer Nina Drama ahead of his UFC title fight last year, the Pretoria MMA fighter accused the government of 'screwing up' the country. He said: 'It's the worst government in the world by a long shot. We are truly and exceptionally s**t…it's the most corrupt in the world.' He continued: 'Our country is beautiful, the people are amazing…..There are a lot of great people doing great work. But I have to say, the government is terrible. Do I admit the tenacity with which they screw up? It's astonishing'. Of President Cyril Ramaphosa, he added: 'He takes all the money.' Duduzile Zuma wears 'terrorist' T-shirt to court over looting tweets
Duduzile Zuma – the daughter of MK Party founder Jacob Zuma – has branded herself a 'modern day terrorist' during her Durban High Court appearance over her July unrest tweets. The MP has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and public violence. Her trial will begin on 10 November. In a bold move, Duduzile Zuma wore a T-shirt with the slogan 'modern day terrorist' to the Durban High Court over her controversial July 2021 tweets. The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and two counts of incitement to commit public violence. The trial is scheduled to take place from 10- 21 November. Posting pictures of herself in court on her Instagram account, a beaming Duduzile thanked her supporters. She posted: 'At the end of the day, I'm a good woman, no matter what people say. 'I'm not perfect by any means, but my heart is pure, and I love hard with everything I have.' Her court appearance comes days after she rallied her supporters to take action against anyone who threatened KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In 2021, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was accused of encouraging the July unrest, where properties and stores around the country were looted, vandalised, and torched. During the period, over 70 people are reported to have died in violent confrontations. Duduzile Zuma Sambudla has made headlines over her questionable social media posts. Her July unrest tweets from 2021 have landed her in hot water. Images via TikTok: @duduzumasambudla The daughter of the former president retweeted several videos of the violence, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before. WhatsApp accuses Moscow of trying to block secure communication for millions of Russians
Russia said on Wednesday that it had started restricting some WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms META.O, and Telegram calls, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases. Text messaging services and voice notes are currently unaffected. A simmering dispute with foreign tech providers intensified after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Russia blocking Meta's Facebook and Instagram, slowing the speed of Alphabet's GOOGL.O YouTube and issuing hundreds of fines to platforms that failed to comply with Russian rules on online content and data storage. 'WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people's right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people,' WhatsApp said late on Wednesday. 'We will keep doing all we can to make end-to-end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including in Russia.' Telegram said its moderators were using AI tools to monitor public parts of the platform to remove millions of malicious messages every day. 'Telegram actively combats harmful use of its platform including calls for sabotage or violence and fraud,' Telegram said. In July 2025, WhatsApp's monthly reach in Russia was 97.3 million people, compared to 90.8 million for Telegram, according to Mediascope data. Third-placed VK Messenger, an offering from state-controlled tech company VK reached 17.9 million people. Russia has a population of more than 140 million people. STEADY DEGRADATION Russia banning WhatsApp and Telegram users from making calls comes as the government is actively promoting a new state-controlled messaging app, MAX, that will be integrated with government services and which critics fear could track its users' activities. Senior politicians are migrating to MAX, urging their followers to come with them. Anton Gorelkin, a leading regulator of Russia's IT sector in parliament, said he would post to his MAX followers first and said many other lawmakers would soon follow suit. WhatsApp's other services remain available for now, but the steady degradation of a service is a tactic Russia has employed before, notably with YouTube, where slower download speeds have made it harder for people to access content. Human Rights Watch said in a report last month that Russia has been 'meticulously expanding [its] legal and technological tools to carve out Russia's section of the internet into a tightly controlled and isolated forum '. Lawmakers have approved a new law that tightens censorship and could have sweeping ramifications for digital privacy, with Russians facing fines if they search online for content Moscow considers 'extremist', including via virtual private networks that millions use to bypass internet blocks.
